I was playing the GC scenario as the Japs against an AI and couldn't help but notice how hopelessly inferior the A6M2 was to the F4F. I played all the way up to oct.10/'42. East of Tassa there was a u.s. CV fleet, I positioned a carrier fleet of my own of equal strength 6 hexes away. However, whether i used my fighters as mass CAP or mass escort (both from 10,000 and 15,000 alt) I was slaughtered. I noticed that the A6M2 is FAR inferior to the F4F as opposed to original witp. The best I would get is 1:5 kill ratio, even if i outnumbered them by a fair amount and that was on a good day. And yes I had good morale and good squad leaders, all of my fighter groups were at least 80 exp, infact only 1 was that low. The rest were all 87-92 exp. Although the apparent imbalance wasn't restricted to fighter vs fighter, the imbalance was also in the difference of fighter vs carrier bombers. The F4F massacred my bombers if it got a chance to shoot at them, even in relatively small numbers. In a 1:1 ratio of fighters to bombers the Americans would shoot down at least 75% of my bombers, while if i was given the same scenario, my fighters would shoot down maybe 20% of the enemy bombers, and that was considered good. The only conclusion I can reach is that aircraft upgrades are all the more crucial in AE. Is this the case? I mean that must be it. I know that at this point the Allies started gaining the upper hand in this aspect of the war, but not THAT much. And if that is the case then the GC scenario seems kind of senseless to even attempt as the japanese. Because you apparently can't get the next A6M upgrade and clearly it's impossible to win an even carrier battle and you aren't gonna be able to get anything more than 1:1 ratio in carrier ac numbers.
