This will be an AAR written by a wet-behind-the-ears Noob vs the dastardly AI. If you're looking for an AAR written by someone who has a great grasp of the game, who devises clever strategies, and who really knows what he's doing, you have come to the right place! Just hit the link below - It takes you to an AAR entitled "Allied vs Jap AI" written by jimh009.

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2190415

This is a great read for a noob because he doesn't clutter up his report with thousands of lines from the Combat Reports informing us that rowboat A has just fired on rowboat B at location C. Instead, he tells you what he's doing, why he's doing it, and what he thinks he might try to do in the future. If, instead of benefiting from his AAR, you decide to squander some of your time reading mine, you might notice that some of my strategies are almost identical to some of his. Probably just coincidence.

One of the main reasons I'm writting this thing is that I like to bloviate. Another reason is that writting about my game improves my game. If I'm trying to tell you what I'm doing and why I'm doing it, then it follows that I have to give some thought to my game. This is something I'm not naturally prone to do. Left to my own devices, I'd just move units around until I got bored and then hit the turn button.

Anyway here we go

Ships sunk - 7 December 1941

What's the matter with those nitwits? They're supposed to sink BBs, not destroyers. Destroyers I need. Not only that, they're bombing coastal AMcs! I can just see it now:

Imperial Navy Headquarters

Flying officers Chicomarxsu, Harpomarxsu and Grouchomarxsu report to Admiral Yamamoto.

Yamamoto: "Hey guys, what's the story? I give you a nice brand new airplane, put a neat bomb on it for you, truck you all the way over to Pearl Harbor, and what do you do? You waste the Emperor's time and money bombing a converted shrimp boat for Chrisakes! While you were lolly gagging over Ford, did you happen to notice those big gray things next to the piers? They're called battleships, and the Emp and I were kind of hoping you'd at least scratch the paint on some of those babies. I'm issuing a dull dinner knife to each of you. You know what to do."

Hi!

Now THIS is what Im looking for !! An AAR written in the style of General George Armstrong Custer rather than George Washington

As a total noob to AE/WITP ,someone on page 202 of the manual, and still waiting for a fix to get me playing on my quad core without freezes and glitches you give me hope (and inspiration as Don Williams might have said!).

Good luck with the first turn in China by the way....it sounds like the incredibly powerful Nationalist Divisions are made up of one man in each and each is individually represented

It will be a seat of the pants experience getting all those troops across to the DEI and out of Rangoon I would have thought, so lets hope "Flying Officers Chicomarxsu, Harpomarxsu and Grouchomarxsu" are redeployed to the Japanese air forces around the DEI

All the best, and I will be with you in spirit!!

Ian

Another well wisher on your allied first turn.

I made an attempt this morning but had to come up for air after an hour. Been too scared to go back since...good luck building those stockpiles in Java.

Thanks guys!

Reviewing my AAR, I felt it was somewhat disjointed, and could use some organization. So, from now on, I'm going to submit an AAR for the latest turn followed by an "Intelligence - Plans, and Operations Report" for the next turn. That, in turn, will be followed by another AAR describing the disastrous results of my actions.

Intelligence, Plans, and Operations - 8 December 1941

Intelligence

SigInt

3/Kure 1st SNLF  is planning for an attack on Legaspi.
II./124th Infantry Battalion is planning for an attack on Kuching.
II./4th Infantry Battalion is planning for an attack on Miri.
144th Infantry Regiment is planning for an attack on Guam.
Kimura Det  is loaded on a Hakone Maru class xAP moving to Legaspi.
3/I./124th Infantry Battalion is planning for an attack on Miri.
1st Tank Regiment is loaded on a Japanese xAK moving to Singora.
3/113th Infantry Regiment is planning for an attack on Kota Bharu.
2/16th Engineer Regiment is planning for an attack on Mauban.
5th Field AF Construction Battalion is loaded on AK Tosan Maru moving to Patani.

Location of Japanese Carrier forces

Unknown

Plans and Operations

1 - Establish LOC between the west coast and Australia: Pearl-Christmas-Suva-Noumea

2 - Counter any Japanese expansion through the Solomons which might threaten LOC with OZ. I intend to do this by reinforcing Port Moresby with LCUs and LBA. Once PM, and some other bases to be named later, are secured, I'll set about, by the use of air power, to introducing the Japanese garrison at Rabaul to the simple joys of life in the Stone Age.

3 - Make a big move in the DEI. I'm going to put two to three more divisions on Java, and bring in as much LBA and supplies as I can. As I'm moving my shipping out of the Java sea, the Japanese are going to be bringing lots of shipping in, and for awhile, until the AI get tired of all this and cleans my clock, my subs and LBA are going to have a target rich environment.

4 - Everywhere else - Duck and cover.

and now the dreaded first turn. I'll start with India and work my way 'round.

India

India is just about self sufficient provided no large military actions are taking place. I intend to gradually build up stocks of fuel and supplies by using the smaller transports to bring in goods from the off map bases.

Off Map Bases

Aden

500 supplies per day
100 fuel per day

Abadan

1700 supplies per day
15,000 fuel per day

All AKs and AKLs with a capacity of less than 10,000 will proceed to either Karachi or Bombay. Thereafter, they will be used to bring in supplies from the off map bases. Larger capacity AKs, and all escorts, will assemble at Columbo, be formed into TFs, and sent to Cape Town to pick up supplies, fuel, troops, and whatnot for transport to the DEI

TF 423 transporting 44th and 45th Indian Brigades to Singapore will be redirected to Soerabaja. Units will start preparing for Soerabaja

TF 428 transporting 48th Ghurka Brigade to Rangoon will proceed to Batavia. Units will start prepping

TF 427 transporting 48th Indian Brigade to Rangoon will be rerouted to Batavia. Units will start prepping

Burma

There's about 17,000 troops stationed in or near Rangoon. If I don't get them out of there, they'll end up working on the railroad, so I'll do what I can. There's enough shipping in harbor to amphib load the 16th Indian Brigade. It'll go to Batavia. All over the Bay of Bengal ships are scurrying to Rangoon to load the remaining units ASAP. I'm tempted to send some of these guys to the DEI too, but, right now, the Jewel in the Crown  hasn't much more than an honor guard and a couple of mess kit repair battalions defending it, and if I pull any more guys out of there, Winston is going to be upset big time.

The AVG is right down the road at Toungoo, and I want them to provide LRcap during the evacuation. I've got the LRCAP set at 30. Is that enough? Too much? Too little?

Intelligence, Plans, and Operations - 8 December 1941 (Cont)

Malaya

Everytime I try to do a phased withdrawal from the Malay Peninsula,  The Japanese outflank me with amphib landings. So, this time, I'm going to use a tried and true military tactic: Bugout!.
Everybody heads for Singapore and Johore Bharu. Last man turns out the lights.

Georgetown has enough shipping in harbor to embark the two air squadrons and the Punjab Bn.  I had enough shipping to take the 3rd SSVF Bn also, but they're a restricted unit, so they get to work on the railroad. TFs go to Batavia via a waypoint that ensures they sail west of Sumatra.

All TKs, large AKs, and  escorts  to Cape Town via southern Sumatra. Remainder of shipping to Batavia for now

Dutch East Indies

All Java bases start building fortifications
Long legged shipping and escorts go to Cape Town. Remainder to Cairns

Philippines and Hong Kong

The main Japanese landings are expected to be at Lingayen and Legaspi. Other landings will probably take place in northern Luzon to secure airfields there.  Defensive dispositions are as follows:

1 - 71st,11th,91st, and 21 PA divisions will dig in at Lingayen to contest any landings there.
2 - 41st and 51st PA divisions will block any Japanese advance up the Bicol Peninsula.
3 - 3rd Bn/12th PA Regt will screen any possible enemy advance down the Cagayan Valley
4 - Philippine Division will be in reserve at Manila.

Shipping with exception of the PTBs and the submarine force will skedadle to DEI or Pearl.

Hong Kong destroyers and PTs will proceed to Laong, and hopefully, interrupt any Japanese landings up there.
Philippine PTs and some S class subs will proceed to Lingayen and Legaspi

Remainder of sub force set to auto subs after home base set to PH

OldCoot,
Good you´re back with a AE-Noob-AAR.
You have one more reader. Very interesting to read for me.

I hope you´ll use the nice strategic screens again with movements and attacks that
you used in the WitP-AAR.

Plans, and Operations - 8 December 1941 (Cont)

Australia/New Zealand

TFs 229 and 230 are at Darwin  and will transport the two birdie battalions to Port Moresby.
BFs at Broome, Derby, Wyndham, and Katherine are moving to Darwin.

Any shipping on the East coast with enough endurance to make it to  Cape Town is on its way. The remainder will make its way to Sydney. Any shipping on south or west coast with enough endurance is sent to San Francisco. The rest will gather at Sydney.

Ditto New Zealand.

Pearl Harbor

Lexington and Enterprise decide that this would be an ideal time to go to Johnston Island and check out the tourist attractions there for a day or two, or three.

At Pearl, Admiral Kimmel performs a snap inspection and the base does not pass muster. All ships are restricted to base until the place is tidied up.

West Coast and Alaska

All troops not restricted to the west coast are preparing for strategic move to San Francisco. All ships with exception of harbor craft and tankers are sent to San Francisco. Tankers go to L.A.

San Francisco

112th USN Base Force, 47th Const Regt, and the 34th  Infantry Regiment are being combat loaded for transport to Christmas Island

7th BG flies to Pearl Harbor.

Seattle

Colorado and Warspite sent to shipyard repair.
When a TF of escorts arrive from Vancover, I'll set up supply and fuel shuttles to Alaska

A group of B-26s sent to SF. Another group of P-39s  also sent. P-39s aren't much, but they do become P-38s when they grow up.

THE FIRST TURN IS OVER!!!!!!!!

Intelligence, Plans, and Operations - 11 December 1941

Intelligence

Sig Intel

15/Sasebo 8th SNLF is loaded on xAK Azuchisan Maru moving to Jolo.
55th Engineer Regiment is planning for an attack on Tavoy.
6/4th Division is planning for an attack on Jolo.

Plans and Operations

This could be the KB refueling and going home, or it could be the KB refueling so he can come back and bomb me snotless. Let's give it another day before becoming too adventuresome at Pearl. Enterprise, nearing PH, is ordered to go back and view the glories of Johnston Island again.

Several more TFs have arrived at Rangoon  to evacuate troops there. So far, Ms Betty hasn't interfered. AVG is still providing LRCAP

I've got some units at Pearl that I want to send south to strengthen the LOC, but my hands are tied until I know for sure that the KB is gone.

Minelayers off to deposit goodies at Midway
3rd USMC Def Bn and 34th Engrs off to Noumea

Shipping damaged by Japanese attacks

Lightly damaged ships will enter shipyard at Pearl. Those with moderate damage will go to NW shipyards. BBs have too much floatation damage to go anywhere. They will hang around Pearl, and when opportunity permits, will enter yard long enough to get floatation damage down enough to permit travel.

Japanese capture Rabaul!

I am stunned by this development. I was hoping Rabaul would hold out long enough for my shipping from the DEI to pass through Torres Strait before Betty got established on the island.

Once Ms Betty opens shop in Rabaul any shipping in Torres Strait is in trouble.

Prudence would dictate that I divert all this shipping to Perth and then spend the next couple of weeks trucking it 'round OZ. To heck with that! I have never gotten along with Prudence anyway. I'm going to make a run for it! Thankfully, Boise and Marblehead with attendant DDs are through already, and Houston isn't far behind.

If the AI wants Port Moresby it's his, but I'm going to try to hang on. The Pensacola convoy is now unloading two USAAF BFs at Suva, and  I'm going to bring both of these to Cairns and then try to sneak one up to PM. This will give me a lot of badly needed aviation support. Also I'm transferring a squadron of Wirraways to PM - that ought to give me an extra five minutes! Transport aircraft at PM are moving to Cairns, so I can do some air supply if needed.

I have a TF bringing a Pursuit group of P-39s and a Bomber group of B-26s about two to three weeks out. In 11 days I am due to get some A-24s at Brisbane, and some P-40s there a couple weeks later. In a months time I'll be in a fair position, but until then the dice are rolling.

Back at San Francisco, an infantry regt, a couple of BFs, a def bn, and the 8th Marines are headed south.

If you can build up the base at Horn Island, a squadron of fighters there will make any Betty airstrikes very expensive for the AI and help reduce your TF's exposure.  Your TF path will run very close to the east side of Australia once the Bettys start flying, and I've found that there's only a short distance where they are in danger.

Operations

I was afraid that, once Rabaul fell, Betty would immediately start slaughtering my little lambs bugging out from the DEI. But I guess it takes time to bring those torps down from Truk.

The bulk of Philippine refugee shipping has arrived at Soerabaja and is being sorted out and sent to Cape Town or Perth as appropriate.

Rangoon

2nd Burma Brigade has embarked onto transports at Rangoon and sails today. This will end the Rangoon evacuation. So far, the only losses have been part of the Sikh Bn. AVG has provided stellar CAP.

Cape Town

Convoy WS.12/OS 13 Supply Convoy arrives at Cape Town. I now have 192,000 supplies and  183,000 fuel there. I have more than enough shipping there, or on the way there, to load this stuff. It will, of course, go to Java. 18th UK Division will arrive on map tomorrow. Guess where it's going?

Be warned; sometimes there's a covering force with that Canton invasion TF.  Also, there's three battalions of NZ troops down in Suva you can use that are a lot closer than Pearl if you need troops.

Oh, and another warning; the AI doesn't like losing Canton.

Andy:

I've been  reading other AARs, so this attack at Canton wasn't a big surprise.
My goal at this point is to learn the game.  Winning is secondary.
