I had a 4BB + escort TF ordered to bombard Canton Island, I tried with both retirement & remain on station orders, but the TF remains 1 hex short of the island & refuses to bombard. As it happens it fell with minimal casualties helped in no small part by a 3CV TF that blew the hell out of the airfield before settling in to munch on the troops, but it could have been a disaster. What am I missing, why didn't the bombardment occur?

A similar event happened to me. Had a counterinvasion TF set up to retake Ambon, and detached the DD's escorting the TF to run ahead and bombard the base. Instead, they stopped dead in the ocean and now the amphib TF is way ahead of them! The only way I could get the DD's to proceed to the base is to order them to follow and merge with the amphib TF (now unloading at Ambon). Ambon just fell one or two turns ago so it wasn't an air attack issue, and the KB is over near Tawi Tawi right now too, so the threat of airstrikes is minimal.
