Hi Ramjet... now go away you’re the bad guy.

This is a restart in AE of a Grand Campaign from WitP against my old nemesis Ramjet (The Hare); who will be directing the Japanese Empire. We have set no house rules as we are not shore that we need any, also Ramjet is the sort of person that you don’t really need any against.

Here are our Settings;
FOW - On
Weather - On
Allied DC - On
PDU - On
Historical first turn - On
Dec 7th Surprise – On
Reliable Torps - Off
Real R&D - On
No Withdrawals - Off
Reinforcements - Fixed

Combat reports - On
Auto Sub Ops - Off
TF move radius - On
Plane move radius - On
Facilities to expand - Off
Ship/airgroup Auto upgrade - Off
Air/ground replacements - Off
Turn cycle - 1x Day

At present I only have the combat replay as Ramjet is still working on the Japanese set-up turn, but it looks like a mixed start.

The Battleship row at PH appears to have been clobbered, with Nevada, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania all sunk along with the AV Wright. With 3 other BB, 8 CA/CL, 6 DD/DM/DMS, and 5 AD/AV/CM all very badly damaged, and some of these vessels also likely to sink.

Some of the AFs were attacked and bombed in Northern Luzon, with a number of aircraft destroyed/damaged on the ground, and runways/buildings damaged.

The good news is that Force Z was attacked by Nells, but only 1 torpedo hit on Repulse reported, so hopefully I should be able to save this force for a rainy day.

Thought I would do some strategizing well I wait for Ramjet to do the big setup turn, talking the talk I suppose you could call it. So here are some daft ideas:

I also invite comments and suggestions from other players.

India Command; I think the 2 key areas to fortify and defend are Ceylon, and the Calcutta-Dacca-Chittagong triangle. Madras would also need a decent sized garrison, but could be supported by airpower from Ceylon. The other small east coast ports could be held lightly, as I think the Japanese would need a big port for an invasion. The Burmese frontier line; Imphal-Kohima-Ledo could fortified and held by Brigade sided forces, as I think it would be hard for the Japanese to supply a large strategic force in this area from Burma.

Burma Command; Rangoon is a death trap and any enemy pressure on Pegu would force its evacuation, with Mandalay and Shwebo only having any defensive possibilities. There would be no Troop reinforcement of Burma, as I would consider supply a problem for the units already there. Southern Burma (Tavoy) is also a trap, and should be evacuated on the commencement of hostilities.

Malaya Army; Northern Malaya cannot be defended if the Japanese land on the east coast in any force (which they have). There is a chance of a defense, and maybe even a limited counter attack in the Kuala Lumpur area. But it would be expected that the Japanese would deploy sufficient forces as to compel me to withdraw in to Singapore.

KNIL Army Command; The Dutch outer bases are unlikely to hold-out for long if the Japanese decide they want them. The only area that could reasonably put-up a long term defense would be Java, and with that in mind some Dutch units could be moved in from the outer bases. Also this area offers the best chance of surface naval interference of enemy landing operations.

USAFFE; The Philippines area has no chance of any successful long term defense, but must be held for as long as possible, as this would foreseeable tie-up a large enemy force. If the large enemy strategic force operating in the Philippines was released early in 1942 for operations elsewhere the results would be catastrophic. Also as much shipping as possible must be saved from the Philippines, but Luzon must be also resupplied before it is cut-off.

Australia Command; 2 main base areas will be Darwin-Katherine and Townsville- Cairns, with support bases at Perth and Brisbane- Sydney. Port Moresby is a must have base for the Japanese, but not for the Allies as we can project our airpower from North East Australia. Port Moresby in my thinking can be used as bait for Japanese assault and supply shipping, which literally as to come across in front of us to reach Port Moresby.

To be continued;

Not a 'teach grandma to suck eggs' comment. But the trap at PM has to have bait otherwise you'll only catch a mouse where maybe you want a rat.

Are you planning on leaving something at PM, or maybe more importantly, are you intending on defending it just enough that he is obliged to stay in the area helping to guard, suppress and supply the effort? More chances to deal attrition and/or a hammer blow, in an area of your choosing, this way...

Hi Mate… am busy on the first Allied first turn for the next couple of days, so will have a detailed answer on my strategy for PM after that.

But basically my idea would be to defend PM with a brigade size force dug-in, compelling the Jap player to bring a division. While not building up the AF or port for him to use, and when things went pear-shaped making some sort of attempt to exact the garrison.

DP.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 08, 41

Well I can tell you that December the 8th is not a good day for the cause, as KB hit Pearl Harbor again. Battleship Row as been basically obliterated with only 1 BB left, and it is debatable whether this will stay afloat also. So it looks like Plan Orange is off the drawing board, and I won’t be steaming across the Pacific to sort these Japs out any time soon.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 09, 41

Day 3 of WW2 in the Pacific was a little better for the Allies, with some Jap shipping sunk by Submarine torpedo and Carrier airstrike.

I must admit that AE so far has a realistic feel about it, result wise that is. But that I am having to double check my turns, which is something that I haven’t had to do with WitP for a long time.

Ramjets strategy seems to be historic so far, but he seems pushing for air-superiority quite early over Malaya and Luzon. So that I am hoping that he will tie-out his Fighter force with these long-range sweeps, and give me a chance to repair my Fighter units.

Hi there aprezto; Thats the Naval search window in Intelligence tab of WitpStaff-AE. I use my old trusty ( got me lossed many times) field compass, and try and set proper search patterns.

You can say that again mate, tigerrat was right, I should have got out of there after the first strike-day. Got too cocky… now I’m trapped with a damaged Carrier between KB and the Betties/Nells out of the Marshall Islands.

How hurt is she? Aim for someone unexpected - Anchorage maybe? December though - could strike nasty weather that way... If it were me, and as Japan, I'd split KB for this and try a better chance of tracking you down.

Maybe try and track south keeping at range 14 (I think, can't remember the torpedo range of miss betty). Just that south from Wake is the obvious retirement track for KB. If it were me I'd hazard the northern weather, and move NE at cruise one day, then due north 2 days, then track back east. Depends alot on your damage. Gads, it's the 10th of Dec too, KB is very close after a single PH strike. Maybe, again depending on the damage, hazard a full speed sprint. Hate to side step KB only to sink cause the temporary seals burst.

Maybe North, one sprint, and loop over with the plan of returning to Midway. Likely to be a sub screen there though - approach from the West using waypoints and autodisband.

Sorry, a bit of a typed brain dump there. Either way, I think him likely to want to take this opportunity to sink you, and it worth a sprint. I think he will split KB in order to get you and that South is the least likely he will track but with the added danger of miss betty...

Not much help in the end :-(

at this stage of the game you dont even have any other bait you can offer to force/coerce/entice him in a different direction. I agree with wobbly, head north. But what is the damage?

PS. love the sig line Wobbly!! I keep getting the, "what are you thinking about?" question. Of course i'm supposed to give a deep and meaningful answer - somehow, "i'm just trying to figure out how to evac the PI" just doesnt cut it. AAAARRGGHHH. Real life. Such a distraction.

Excellent, baring some further calamity you are in the clear. She doesn't seem too wounded and KB will have to using a divining rod, rub the budda's tummy and spend quite a bit extra in fuel while incurring extra sys and engine damage to get you.

How bad is the major damage? How much do you want her to be ready NOW?

Just thinking that Pearl will be swamped with damaged ships - if you can stop somewhere and repair minor float damage, that it may be worth heading to Sydney or Auckland. You are then in a very good location to jump on negligably defended, over extended thrusts on the Solomons or points further south. Fuel levels in NZ and Oz are pretty ugly though...

Flying tiger: Yeah it is worse than illicit drugs! Especially amphib operations, I am so 'mind not on the job at hand' when I have one going on in the background: in the game. Rips my wife a new one.

Hi there Wobbly… All the damage that is left is major, Lex repaired all her minor damage over-night, and pumped out the water (speed came up from 18K to 25K).

Won’t try for Pearl as the yards are full, and I suspect that a Sub line is forming to the west. Am heading to Johnston Island to meet a refueling group (if long range air search is clear), and then will sail for West Coast.

Just got the next turn and Lexy is a very lucky lady she made it south without being spotted. The real heroes are the repair crews, and the search ‘Cats’ that kept track of KB, and gave her the way out.

I must say that this game is starting to feel real, I didn’t get much sleep last night worrying about Lexington. Also thanks for the really great tips guys, I appreciate the input, helps me think outside the square.

I’m sorry I’m not doing a more detailed AAR at present, but I feel the then to still concentrate on the game mechanics and testing. The game so far seems very realistic, and some of the results give one a nostalgic lump in my throat. One of the main characteristics of AE that I am starting to notice is the weather, especially in naval search, insofar as it is now possible to hide TFs under weather.

If I am reading Ramjet correctly he is trying to establish air-superiority over both Malaya and Luzon, using high-altitude Zero sweeps. There is not much that I can do to counter this with the Buffalos and P-40s that I have, other than trying to fox the occasional rest day for my fighters. Withdrawing my fighters is not an option as I have resupply convoys heading for both Singapore and Manila, and need the airfields and ports in operation for their protection and unloading.

On the ground in Malaya and the Philippines it is my basic plan to withdraw my forces to compact areas around Singapore and Manila that can only be flanked from the sea. There may be a chance for limited counter attacks in both Southern Malaya and Central Luzon, if Ramjet closes up on me with spread-out marching units. I haven’t definitely decided on the fall-back position in Luzon yet, but I am leaning towards Bataan because of the coastal guns.

I have 3 naval surface action groups operating in the SRA at present waiting for a chance to mix it up with Jap invasion convoys.

1# British force containing POW, 3x CL, 3x DD operating out of Batavia, Target is Kucking invasion.

2# Dutch force containing 3x CL, 4x DD operating out of Kendra, Target is Ambon invasion.

3# USN force containing 1x CA, 2x CL, 6x DD operating out of Tarakan, Target is Davao invasion.

In the Pacific my main task at present is to reinforce and resupply the Islands protecting Hawaii, then start establishing a supply chain to Australia and New Zealand. My 2 operational Carriers (Lexington is damaged and heading for the WC.) will be used to cover the Island buildup, and I don’t envisage any offensive action at present in the Pacific. Also I will attempt to get fuel and supply convoys on their way to Australia within the week.

In China I am just consolidating my ground units on the major Cities at present, but have moved on Ichang in the hope that he reinforces. Have moved 2x squadrons of AVG to Changsha so he doesn’t get too carried away in Southern China with his Airpower. Have ordered a few isolated Chinese units to cut road and rail lines, just to give him some logistic headaches.

Wow. You really generate some sorties.... Good luck with your ADBA Nav forces. I'm at 12-24-41 and have gotten good service harassing landings near Tarakan and Davao. I also lucked into a landing force with the 3 Hong Kong destroyers at Miri with very good effect (watchout for the BB/BC though, I've been lucky in an exhilerating game of tag.......so far). ..........curious as to why you didn't just fly the B17s out.......I have had good luck with single merchants moving supply in the Clark/Bataan/Manila area, IJ appears to be more interested in Mine and ASW forces, weather may have helped some; BUT I have since learned that wherever you put the USAFFE HQ seems to generate a HUGE supply draw. ..... Seeing the amount of supply generated in-theater was a pleasant suprise, but marshalling transport forces is a challenge. Be sure to set you bastions to hold excess supply.......I've also done this with the UK near east off map bases in the hope they will draw more supply for me to ship onto map.....one thing I did that I think was a mistake was sending the Perth merchant ships west. I have a glut on that side of the map now........Soory I can't be real specific, my opponent may lurk..........Good luck and thanks for this....I will be watching.

Hi dasboot, and thanks for the input.

Yes I was surprised by the number of air sorties myself, but I am a-bit of an airpower nut, so I spend a lot of time micromanaging the air. Only surface forces that have had some success so far have been the PT/MTB boats, but the SAGs are ready and waiting. Decided to ship the 10 B-17s out of Manila as they were all damaged/unserviceable, also to take the pressure off the aviation support. Have USAFFE at Bataan (because of the CD guns), and are building up supply and defenses there.

The tempo of AE seems slower than AE, and the Allied player has time to think. But it does seemed to need I lot more gas/supply moved to the south and southwest pacific, but I have a feeling you will not regret (overtime) the shipping-glut in your western ports. I wish you luck in your game and hope you keep us updated on your situation.

DP.

Hi Divepac;

Regarding the zeros sweeping HK. I think this is a bug that was supposed to have been removed... If you had AC on escort you could end up sweeping instead under the local commanders own control

Poor Hong Kong has fallen, and over 15,000 Allied Servicemen go into the bag. Never had a chance of holding for long with all the artillery and air-support. Wonder if these forces are staying in China, if they do I could lose some of the Southern Cities.

Here are the campaign air losses so far;
