It makes me think what would have happened if someone accidentally pressed big red "FIRE" button on that main battery... You know which one I have in mind

Until now, I hadn't appreciated how much SoDak's 'got back'.

Now, now, that main gun turret isn't pointed in that direction to insure the AR gets the repairs done on time; surely there's no need to do that...

Although two of her sister ships are still around (Massachusetts and Alabama I believe) it's a shame she was scrapped. But then I suppose there aren't too many deep water ports in South Dakota for her to play exhibit ship in.

Wow..what an awesome ship. Look at tht size of those main guns.

Somebody better be working on the EIR. If there is an Environmental Defence Council lawyer in Noumea they are so screwed.

Or put her a little further south on Lake Oahe. Then raise the Bismarck, refurbish her and have the Battle of the Missouri River.
Quite a feat to have the only city in the US to have a battleship named after it rather than a cruiser.

It appears the two cans are relatively large in the picture from overhead. What you can't see is that the bridge of both cans is below the main deck level of the South Dakota. Were the main guns in #2 Turret to fire at that range (absent the bridge structure of the Vestal) the shells would go right over the cans, and the damage would be from the blast, which would be significant at that range, with the possibility of bending and melting the mast. The big thing is the mass. South Dakota has approximately 30 times the mass of the cans, both of which were in the 1500 ton range.

They were. But their definition of EIR was 'Explosive Impact Repair.' 4000 men gotta go somewhere!

Amazing how they went from such a gorgeous ship in the North Carolina class to such an ugly class in the South Dakotas.

I find the South Dakota-class as my favorite design of all the battlewagons. The profile was much cleaner with the single funnel. Just my opinion.

I believe the turrets look huge on the So Dak ships due to the lack of length and the general compactness of the vessels. They're a good vessel for combat but I'd hate to be on one for extended journeys. Everything I've read about them was that they were cramped compared to other battleships.
