Yep, it means Kido Butai. That translates to something like "Mobile Strike Force".

Kido Butai, this is Task Force 38.
Task Force 38, this is Kido Butai.
Now shake hands, and come out fighting.

Mmmmm. How about a mod of the Battle of the Philippine Sea with Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, and Hiryu resurrected and thrown in for fun and games? Oh, and forget the Shinano. Build a second Taiho instead.

It seems like it splits up early in 1942 into two or three smaller TFs.  Anyone else see this?  Am I making this up?  Am I smoking the happy stuff?

No, it splits up, like it did historically. The Japanese rarely operated the full KB together after Pearl; they needed carriers in too many places. Of course, that was what got them into a pickle in the real war-they didn't put it back together before Coral Sea, and were never able to do so after that.
