Playing in a PBEM game, I don't see any reason to upgrade my infrantry brigades from Springfields to Improved Springfields. The QC factor appears to be the same, am I interpreting this correctly?

Improved Springfields are slightly cheaper but there is nothing to be gained by upgrading brigades already armed with Springfields.

On the other hand, you can get Springfield firepower into another 40-brigades without paying the support penalty by researching the Improved model and then upgrading units using inferior small arms. There is also a slight increase in firepower (from 150% to 175% at one-hex) and slightly better charge protection and Sharpshooter bonus with the Improved model.

They make an effective weapons choice starting mid-war in my opinion.
