ORIGINAL: Apollo11 Hi all, IIRC there is full squadron of Eurofighters that is operational... Leo "Apollo11" is it operational, or can it fly ?? Not sure on the Germans, but 'ours' have been operational for a while now intercepting the Russian Backfires. I hope by " intercepting " you mean doing flybys of some type. Do not go and start an international incident please over there To intercept , from a national security point of view , means to send your aircraft (usually armed fighters) out to meet someone elses aircraft, which is flying awfully close to your borders and is making you nervous. The interceptors go out to investigate the intruder , then generally stay with him until he decides to find something else to do, away from your borders. Intercepts are usually professional (very few rude gestures or threatening moves--at least among major powers, although the PRC is often the exception to the rule. Usually only small countries tend to be rude or threatening--in my experince). The basic goal of the intercept is to communicate to the inturding aircraft, "yeah we've got you , nice try , please don't try anything foolish". Or as one of my former Patrol Plane commanders used to say "don't make us have to hurt you". The civilian equivalent would be a uniformed store security guard walking up to a suspected shop-lifter and saying good morning, then hanging around. It's often felt that to not intercept send the message , "we don't care about our airspace security" and invites more serious transgressions. As it is , most interception are simply "training exercises" for both sides. Only when someone does something absolutely totally stupid (like trying to "thump" the other plane--setting off your after burner directly in front of it at least scaring the crap out of the crew and at least smashing their windshield (or windscreen for you Brits). Or being careless and colliding with the intruder. Both are VERY bad form and fortunately rare.
