I'm confused (for a change) with the difference between these settings for an air group on mission Naval Search:

80% Search
80% Search, 20% Rest

Are they the same thing?

Cheers!

Exactly the same, as long as I understand from rule 7.2.1.8
"Long Range CAP over TF’s are less effective then normal CAP. When Naval Search, ASW Patrol or Training is selected as the Mission, the corresponding Nav Search, ASW Patrol or Training Level dictates the percentage of the unit that will fly this Mission while the remainder of the unit rests."

yes.
[Edit: Assuming you picked Rest as the secondary mission]

Maybe it's modelled on real life. In real life (at least USN patrol crews) you have to mandate "Crew rest" (which means you had better be in your room trying to get some sleep). If you don't have mandated rest , you take it to mean you can go sightseeing , chase girls, drink yourself silly and do everything but "rest".

Doesn't leaving the balance of activities (in this example 20%) leave some discretionary options open to the local commander? For example, if I set my PBY-5s to "Naval Attack" and then in the subscreen change their % effort allocation to: 80% search, won't 20% of them fly off for naval attack, given the opportunity?

I think doing the 80% search, 20% rest mandates that they do these activities *and no others*. Not 'nailing down' the other 20% lets them do something else-at least that's my take.

I tend to agree with you on this. In particular, I've noticed fighter groups scrambling what seemed to be unassigned planes/pilots beyond the amount that had been placed on CAP duty. I would assume that an assigned rest percentage would have prevented that from occuring.

It's always pilot error. Sometimes the idiot just doesn't know how to fly a broken aircraft.

Err... will they actually rest if the main mission is naval attack?

I mean, if I set mission to Naval Attack and have 0% rest and 0% patrol... but they don't attack anything... will they have rested? It's not like they are in leave if they remain on alert.

Cheers

If you select naval attack as mission, if you set 80% of the planes to search, the remaining 20% WILL perform naval attack if there is a valid target in range.
The unassigned aircrafts will rest ONLY if you select Naval Search, ASW Patrol or Training as mission.

Bye
