Just finished watching the last episode of "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" with Alec Guinness. One of the times a show lives up to my memory of seeing it the first time many years ago.

Yep, great series.

Hi Mike,

Okey dokey, AAR. Only have a few pics from Boz’s video camera. Scotty, the “Love Monkey” took the official video, and he went North with the boat after I stepped off. He’s supposed to do a shoot-hot video of the whole trip, with sound & everything. When that’s done, I’ll send it out.

Not a whole going on, except we’re pushing the witch as hard as she will go. Had a choice as to whether to go a bit West of South and head for the Windward passage, or take the traditional route through the Mona. Normally, the Atlantic summer breeze says Mona, but we saw some nice low pressure systems heading out from the US coast, so that was the call – we could always bear up if we had to, but I dearly love surfing on a cell front.

Sailed with Boz (the skipper) a lot. We know and trust each other. So, when it looked like the shortcut might work, the man said “plot it, and let’s go”. I was boat navigator, and second watch captain. I simply love working with skippers that know what they are doing.

So Boz says put your winkie on the table, and so we did, and as luck would have it, it was spinnaker city all the way down. We were flying at 110 degrees apparent because that was what the polar Wally said was good, and it put us exactly where we needed to go. We ran on the outside left side of every cell we saw and never dropped below 12. There was a couple big, pressure bumpers, that got us to 21 knots, but we were averaging about 14.8. Not bad. Very glad Boz didn’t have to chop off my winkie.

Ok, so me & Boz, then the “love Monkey” on the bow, then the old fat man at the wheel, and then a nice sunset somewhere in the Atlantic while we’re turning 14s

More to come.

Okay, so we hit the Windward Passage, pretty much on course. I totally hate Haiti, so I plotted us closer to the Cuba side, thinking maybe the US Navy would pick us up, and our Cayman Islands flag would help with the Cubans, and a bunch of us speak Spanish, so that was the deal.

Had a USCG PB wander over and say hello. Nice people, I mean really nice people. They called on 16, we dropped the kite, They sent a Chief over in a rubber boat, he looked at our papers and the log. Then he accepted (privately) a couple bottles of Merlot for the officers mess, and the Chief’s mess, and we be done.

It’s a whole day trip through the passage, and spans a couple patrol areas, but there was always a dot on the horizon. God loves our boys on the sea, and so do I.

Next, Panama, and the ditch.

Great stuff so far, JW, especially the "sunset" shot.  A question about that one.  Your main is way out to port, so you're obviously on a reach or running.  That means you would have very few reasons to have to turn to a ESE heading, when your general course throught the Atlantic would be more like SSW.  Are you sure that isn't actually a sunrise picture?

Nope, sunset. When ya sail cells, the course is 'round'. If your track is South, sometimes ya go East, sometimes ya go West, it's what we call VMG (vector made good), and it's a long term thing. I think we were looking at a long leg before a jybe, and it just happened to be at sunset, and it just happened to be in our wake. It was overcast, so I think it was Thursday, when we took a big lift from that nasty front that came in from Carolina.

Yep, main was out to port, and we just lifted up, and up, and up, till we were ducky. Suppose we could have jybed and then jybed back, but that would have been work, and we were looking to get lucky.

The best I can tell ( hey, I read all of the Patrick O'Brian novels so I must be an expert )
they were on a boat, with sails, and they had a blast, including not sinking. And probably they all wish they were still sailing

Gotcha. I didn't think about the weather. BTW, I remember that nasty storm front. I was sitting on the boat at the marina in Oriental when it poured and howled almost all day Wednesday. Had about 6 inches of rain that day. It was a good "classroom and chartwork below" day.

Thanks for the offer, Torsten, but Mynok and I are planning to start a Guad scenario this weekend to compliment our ongoing CHS campaign. I'm not the fastest player in the world, in fact I may be one of the slowest, but once he and I get that Guad going I'll see how quickly I'm able to turn those turns around. I'll bet I might be able to add a second Guad scenario at some point.

I'll set up our Guad game tomorrow and send you the turn. Might not get many turns in tomorrow as I have some gardening to do, but Saturday will be AE and football all day for sure.

Go Gamecocks! Beat the woofies up and down the field tonight despite our redzone execution issues.

Sounds good to me. I won't have a lot of Friday time, either, but Saturday looks good. AE and a couple hours for my fantasy football draft. Looks like I'll be taking a Sunday visit to grandma's in Reidsville, but should have time for some turns before/after. Are you free on Monday as well? It's shaping up to be a free day for me.
