This time Norton helped out.

Status: offline 		I think it's a false alarm this time, as far as I know they checked the site again yesterday and no one could confirm this latest report by Norton. Could be this is somehow still reporting the original problem and has not been updated.

On the weekend Norton didn't flag anything and I got hit.

Norton Internet Security had a 59mb download today and now it flags the site (on my system at least).

The URL I attached came from Googling "The Wargamer". Norton rates each site Google then lists as safe, TBA or unsafe.

Hi Erik, I'm ckear - I think Wargamer needs to contact Symantec to get their name of the blacklist.

I remember a religious site I used to visit being blocked by Norton Parental Control once as a sex site. Damn begetting!

Yes. Look at the URL right under the AVG window in my post image. It shows www.wargamer.com. I also ran Google just typing in "wargamer.com" and www.wargamer.com links came up and they all were marked safe. I guess I was getting The Wargamer and Wargamer.com.aus mixed.

I was over at the Bethesda forums when User account control asked if i wanted to allow Microsoft mail..and then it gave an error as i had never installed it in the first place.

I've been having a lot of lag when going online but i'm not sure if its a virus or Verizon cutting back on bandwidth.

Status: offline 		I would recommend switching norton to somthing like bitdefender. My last experience with norton was on my work pc where we were unable to remove it completelty. It stucks to pc like plague. It left somkind of firewall into it and I was unable to use remote helpdesk.

I know about those tools and tried them too but they didnt work. Norton still persisted. The program tried to periodacly update itself even after all the uninstalls and removels.

This was of course 3 years ago. I dont have the same work computer or work in the same place anymore so its not an issue anymore.

Something like this happened to me, it was a popup I think. I tried to kill it using every non click method I knew and it didn't die. I think I did the cntl-alt-del and picked it off the apps tab and killed it that way. Or I just left it there and rebooted which promped a safe message box to kill it. I'm not sure which method I used but it hasn't affected me so far.

This particular Trojan disables Ctrl+Alt+Delete ability, disables Task Manager as the Administrator, disables the Active Desktop, changes the wallpaper to something called "Critical Failure" and disables the ability to change the wallpaper back.

It's aim is also to redirect to a fake AV and Windows Update site.

As someone mentioned it seems to take advantage of a weakness in Adobe Reader as its kill vehicle.

If any of these things happen to anyone, don't panic. Though your AV will remove the Trojan despite the damage being done, these are just Registry settings that are simple to manually change back.

Status: offline 		in the many years I have used computers I have installed Norton twice and McAfee twice. The result was 4 basic melt downs caused by thes programs. I was installing updsates for McAfee and it could not even find its OWN download installer on its OWN web site and cause a system crash.
I have seen cases where if youn uninstall Norton parts of it stick around. There are several free little programs that will completely uninstall norton products. My advice is use ANYTHING but these two companies but you can do what you want.

You know, though Norton let this Trojan go to work whilst a second later locating it and removing it, Symantec did act fairly quickly to patch it up and have the future update fix the registry entries I missed. 59 megs of update as I reported earlier.

Last year I recall some folks being hit by another Trojan that Norton missed but Spyware Doctor picked up - and much in the same fashion, Norton caught up some days later.

I've been reading reviews of AV and suites today and the feedback for the beta Norton Internet Security 2010 is looking very favorable.

In 2008 NIS completely slowed my system down, in 2009 I hardly know its there - it is so unintrusive. It's been the best version of Norton I've ever owned. This bodes well for 2010.

Thing is, no AV is going to catch 100% of everything. A review of Avast in August rated its pick up as 92%. I guess a multilayered approach is going to be best, that or moving to Mac.

But Wargamer still needs to clear its name with Symantec. And it definitely should do so. You know, I didn't even see a notice at Wargamer advising of the past attack, acknowledging that it hapened and apologizing for any inconvenience caused.

That's bad customer service and it's left me with a very sour taste regarding them.

Status: offline 		Let me put it another way. I would not use these two companies products if they got the best reviews in the world. I am not saying they are not good software but I am saying the way they install and work is not good, particularly in the case of Norton.
I agree that no anti virus will catch everything but there are several free programs out there that are just as good or better and when you delete them they are deleted.
I hear you about getting stuck as it has happened to me to. I had a friend who bought a real copy of the norton group of programs and when he installed it the install disk had a virus on it. The only thing Norton said was "could we have the disk" The computer was messed up so bad he ended up buying a new one. He had most of his important stuff on a online storage site. Norton did ot offer to pay any damage to him or even say at least they were sorry. He did not give them the disks out of spite.

I would be upset if what happened to you happened to me. Every time you turn on that system and access the net we take a chance and sometimes we loose.

I sent a request to Symantec myself to have the site checked and cleared but Norton is still flagging as unsafe.

I haven't been in contact with Jim Zabek for a while. Does anyone know if he is aware?

Status: offline 		The problem is not which AV solution you prefer. It's about the security stuff itself. The adobe security hole was known for some time. You had to rename a dll until weeks later Adobe had fixed it for the major versions.
Still I see lot of people with Reader 5/6/7 which are not updated.
Java, flash, etc need to be updated as well as the windows OS. And even in Windows Microsoft has released quickfixes over the last months due to some security holes which could not be fixed as a standard patch/hotfix. It's more or less not possible for a common user to keep up with the found security holes and ways to fix them. And to make matter worst the virus can be encapsulated in a profile bitmap.

The problem with viruses and anti virus products is that the virus is there before a solution exist to identify and remove the virus. In this time, and it can take them some days worst, you are not protected. With the current stealth mechanism of viruses it might be that your anti virus will not find the virus later if you are infected.

For those with 32bit OS an application like http://www.sandboxie.com/ might help because it can trap your internet browser and all processes spawned from within the internet browser.

Adobe Reader and SM Java have an auto-update feature (assuming that users don't disable it). The one associated with Java makes me crazy because the default installation of the update always seems to install a toolbar, or something. Read the fine print before you click through the install!
