I've been planning my shipping to move resources to Honshu from the other Home Islands. Lots of little TFs moving among the small bases. I see the need to increase the size of as many ports as I can in the Home Islands.

Shhh, do not let the AFBs know this. They will just send even more subs to the Inland Sea !

Ah, stuman, I am constantly amazed, gratified, and humbled, at Mike's analyses, and how closely they comport with our developmental concept. Please don't tell him shhh; I am relying on his results, almost exclusively. Gosh, I wish Mike woulda been a Nav Team tester. If I'm maybe Moses, Mike woulda been the Burning Bush.

Same here, Mike has helped me a lot in my understanding of the Jap. meta game ( you know, I am not really sure what " meta " means here, but it looks sort of cool ). It slowly dawned on me that resources should not be a problem. It is all about fuel. Getting to it, moving it, keeping the sources of it safe for as long as possible. You could almost rename this game F(uel)iTP

Hi guys.

John, you're making me blush. I wish I had been a tester as well. It just wasn't meant to be.

stuman, you're right, resources are not a "problem", yet they are. The Japanese player needs only about 75k resources a month to break even. The problem is that Honshu needs 3.3 million a month to keep the industry moving. Most of it comes from the other Home Islands and China/Manchuoko/Korea (C/M/K). But, you need to transport it to Honshu. That'll be a chore and will take precious cargo ships. I'm starting to work through that, but there's a long way to go. I'm beginning to think that ports need to be expanded in the Home Islands as much as is economical (to their max, not max + 3). I'm going to assume 24 day months. The extra 20% will be down days due to too many ships in port, damage to ships slowing movement, etc. So, hopefully, the estimates will be conservative.

Historiker suggested shutting off all the LI. I agree, but only in degrees and only if you know you won't get enough resources to Honshu. There is never a reason to shut off LI in any other place. All other places have excess resources. I'm talking only the areas controlled by Japan at the start of the war, not the SRA/Burma.

Might be too soon to tell for sure, but so far good different. Feels right.

I agree. I find myself thinking about different things during my turns than what I spent the majority of my time pondering in WitP. Ship sizes, fuel costs for operations, searching the map for Air HQ's to increase the administrative capability of my airfields. Logistics, logistics, logistics. All the combat concerns are still there, and need to be planned out, but logistics has taken a much more central focus. All this, just playing the Guad scenario so far.

I really am getting the feeling that it's a good thing I already "knew" how to play WitP. Most of the tactical knowledge does carry over, but there's so much more to learn in AE. Feels like graduate coursework after completing an undergrad degree.

Good indeed!

Well, for us JFBs it's kinda like someone hooked a plow to the car.

We got in about 12 days of war in the Guad scenario over the weekend.  Probably about half as many as we had hoped, but we ended up busier with "other" stuff than we hoped, too.  As early as it is, I think I can safely say that Nik did a fantastic job with the scenario.  Without giving anything away to Martian spies, (like they can't just read our thoughs with our implants ) there are some serious challenges for the Allies in the Guad scenario.  A few things still have me scratching my head, trying to figure out how I'm going to do stuff.

Oh, and air combat!!!  It has become a completely different game in the air.  Everything is scaled way down, and feels much more in line with everything I've read.  Many kudos to the AE team, all the way around!

From what I've read on the forums, that impact will be felt most in the first 6 months of the Campaign. From the way things feel in August, '42, I think the same will be said about the Allies in the second half of the war.

Post work Tithe

My limited experience with AE has been good, it does indeed "feel" right. I think I will easily spend at least the next 4 years learning how to play this game. Badly.

I may have to beg Mike for his spreadsheets when I work up the nerve to try playing Japan.

It is so very much about getting and moving a LOT of fuel, as early in the game as possible. I liked WiTP a lot. I really, really like AE

Sorry Torsten but I think that we will loose... the performance of two years ago can't be repeated with players we have now...

Nah Kristian... the best Italian coach is English football manager... they advanced considerably under him... Fabio Capello is very very very good...

Morning everyone.  I just dropped into the WitP forum to check up on the Hibiki.  I was the only one in that whole forum.  I guess it's not surprising.
