Critical hit? Magazine explosion?

HMS Hood?

I've seen lots of funky surface combat's as well, but the above doesn't really strain credibility I don't think.

A single lucky hit could take out an entire ship; it happened historically.

Just look how many ships were lost to Magazine explosions at Jutland.

Is this FoW giving us an inaccurate report? Or was the ship yours, and was really sunk by one shell?

This can surely happen.

Remember HMS Hood (shell through deck to magazine), USS Arizona (bomb through deck to magazine)....

Yes, Chikuma was mine and she was sunk by a single shell. Regarding the HMS Hood, she was hit by a 15 inch shell, the USS Astoria was armed with 8 inch guns as a main armament, so I think those comparisons are apples and oranges. As far as a magazine explosion or critical hit, there was nothing of that nature noted.

It does not take 15" shell to cause magazine explosion. It takes a shell with enough penetration to go through armor and reach magazine. For CA 8" should be enough. Now if Astoria had sunk a BB with one 8" hit that would have been hard to believe, but sinking ship of the same size certainly is not. It my experience those occasion are very rare in the game, same as they were in real life.

Could have been a turret hit that flashed into the magazine, could have been a secondary magazine that set off the main one, could have been a penetration of the main belt right into the magazine itself.  The phrase "golden BB" comes to mind when I see things like this.

USS Portland sank a CL with one shot at Wake Island in my CG.  Got the "magazine explodes" comment so I knew what happened, but at 9000 yards a CA's MG penetrates any other CA's armor; it just comes down to what is behind the protection and how much force is left after smashing through all that steel.

And even if it is your own ship, FOW can still be playing a role.

Well, then FOW must've made the ship disappear then. Because she sure isn't anywhere on the map to be found.

I am aware of this, however at 9000 yards the elevation of those guns would not be such that a plunging hit would sustained. Therefore we are talking about an 8in shell that is hitting the thickest part of the CA's armor and sinking it with ONE hit. Not a plunging shot that hits the weakest deck armor. Name ONE battle in any theatre of WWII where an incident of the nature cited above transpired?

How mad would you be if the Mutsu just blew up and sank while riding at anchor in Japanese home waters?

Oh wait.....

Don't mean to say that it's not sunk (though even that could happen, but I assumed you checked), but that she actually sustained more hits then reported.

I don't know how anyone could stand to be on these ships. You are basically on a big floating metal bomb. One hit and the whole the ship could go off.

Don't get me started about carriers with their loads and loads of torpedoes and bombs on board.Oh and Battleships with those big a$$ shells for those big a$$ guns, forget it.

It is still possible. Chikuma has 125mm armor if i'am not mistaken, i know that 125mm needs to be a best case for a round but US 8" have 254mm penetration at 9kyd http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNUS_8-55_mk9.htm so they have a very good margin.

The Mogami class cruiser Suzuya was sunk without sustaining a hit. A missed aerial bomb caused concussion damage that destroyed the port propeller. A second near-miss bomb caused a concussion that detonated a Long Lance torpedo in one of her tubes. The resulting explosion and damage sunk the ship.

Akagi was sunk, for our purposes, by a single bomb hit. (She was scuttled by her destroyers, but our game doesn't track scuttling.)
