I have been playing UV for about a week now and i am having a pretty rough time with it. I think it is the abstract aspect of it, i am having trouble trying to figure out what the other guy is doing. I guess my imagination just is not good enough to interprt all the little icons. Dont get me wrong, i think the game is great and i love the idea behind it, i am just having trouble. I have never played a naval wargame before. I am use to having a map where your objectives are pretty clear and so is the front lines, you can tell what direction your enemy is going to have to come from in order to give you problems and its easier to picture. With UV the orders are just so open ended. "You need to take Lunga" and i just dont know where to begin :( Does anyone have any advice for an overwhelmed rookie wargamer on where to begin? What are some of the first things you guys do when starting a new game? Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Hi, remember that old 70's poster of the cat hanging from a branch with the caption "Hang in there baby?"
You just have to start slow and small. Try the tutorial and then Coral Sea.
It's all about airplanes. They need bases. The ships are just to keep the enemy away from your bases, bombard enemy bases and transport troops to capture new bases for your airplanes.
Since airplanes can not build their bases you need to capture ones already built or use engineer units to build new ones.
Start slow, small and think airpower (range and bomb load)

Read the forums and AAR's and ask questions, we all like to help.

If your new to this type of game it can be overwhelming at first. I remember when I first started playing Pac War. Seemed like information overload.

The best I can tell you is to read the After Action Reports "AAR's" to gain some insight into how to play. Depending on what side you are playing try to decide what you think is important and also what is important to the enemy. If you are playing the allies, you can bet that Japan will be interested in Port Morseby, Gili Gili, and Lunga for starters. As the allies you want to hold and fortify these bases for your ultimate thrust on Rabaul.

I usually do not try to do everything at once. In the beginning of #17 as the allies I initially build up Port Morseby, and secure Buna, and Gili Gili. The IJN will make ar thrust at these as well as Lunga. I let them have Lunga, but I do build up Luganville for my eventual landings at Lunga.

These are just my methods but there are many other ways to tackle this. You willl find that there are a lot of good people in this forum willing to help you out.

I read your thread I can understand your difficulties. To best be able to play this game you should a least have a basic understanding of combined force tactics (naval/air /land) and some interest and understanding in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Working the game gets easy. I’d be glad to help you out by teaching you some tricks through playing a tutorial PBEM game.
