Hi,
Game looks interesting and I am very interested in the subject matter. Having read the posts here and looked at he screenshots I am not really seeing or reading much to make me jump off the fence. Could just be me though.

I am not familar with the previous titles the game is based on/updated from so don't really have a reference.

Does anybody have a good AAR of a mission walk through with (many) pics they would be willing to post? This might also help people who may just pass this title by. I'm not interested in lots of fancy graphics but the current crop of screenshots don't (IMO) show the whole picture. No pun intended. Unless that is the whole picture.

Got to be careful with splashing the cash, so the wife tells me, and it is a lot of money to sit on shelf if it turns out to be something less than I was expecting.

Many cheers.

Joe,
For some AAR's of the original game that will give you an idea of what this game is about and what it is check at the top of the forums for the AAR Threads. Lots from when the game was being overhauled. You can also roam through this part of the forum and hop in to threads with titles that sound like they describe how to do something.

Just my thoughts on this game platform. IMHO this is a hard core strategy game not meant for the faint hearted or weak willed gamer. If you like a more nuts and bolts strategy game that covers a large theatre of operations you may like this. This is not a turn based strategy game in the general sense.

In this game you command the entire air forces of either the Allies or the Luftwaffer in either the Battle of Britain or during the Strategic Air War campaign over Europe and the Mediterranian. As the aggressor forces you plan out strike missions, fighter sweeps, recon missions and follow targeting constraints from High Command. You also manage your resources and maintain your Fighter and Bomber groups. Your goal is to destroy your enemis ability to wage war. As the Defendor forces you react to incoming strikes / missions and move AA assets to cover your resources. You can control the development of Aircraft for you forces and select the Aircraft each squadron will utilize. This is a very general description.

This is not a flight simm. This is not a first person shooter game. This is not a Fantasy Role Play Game. However this is an awesome strategy game. I would recommend spending some time reading through this forum and asking questions. Most of us are pretty good about trying to answer questions that we can. Some guys like Sarge and Swift have made a very big effort to help us all figure things out and how to play this game better. So just stick around and eventually you will be picking this beauty up. That is if you are really in to large scale hard core strategy games.

Later,
KayBay

Also, some of the campaigns will take a VERY LONG TIME to complete. This is not a beer and pretzels (or is it Red Bull and Dorittos now?) game. I prefer the bomber side in both games because I like to make all the decisions on what gets bombed etc. It is pretty intense to sit there with no control over what is happening when the lead starts to fly. Think: you are the David Strathairn character in "Memphis Bell" Col. Craig Harriman. All you can do is sit around and sweat it out while your boys are fighting it out and hope you didn't screw it up too much. It is a great game and I'm very happy it was re-released

If you never played the original games, buying this is a no-brainer. You get both games and all the improvements no less.

For me, I played both original games, and the new version isn't different enough for me to spend another $50.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. Going to wait on this one as opinion seem to be split in other threads.

I still think a good updated AAR/walkthrough of a turn or two with pics would help those not familiar with the original games.
Anyway, I will keep an eye on this for a possible future purchase.

Cheers guys.

To be honest while I still have to run the game in a window rather than full screen mode ( hoping this will be fixed by a workaround or integrated into a new patch ) I've got to say I'd rate this as a "buy now".

The AI does seem improved and a lot of the old bugs/exploits I'd known before don't seem to work anymore.

Yes, there are still some lamentable gaps in documentation ( pilot replacements, exact effects of the various sensors on German night fighters etc) which could keep people from jumping in but I think that a forum-created wiki will pretty quickly sort this out. There are certainly enough people here with the knowledge to fill in those gaps.

Honestly, that depends on how much of a grognard you are

I'm a hopeless grognard, so even if I complained around that the game could be improved, it didn't take me 5 seconds to buy it, and I would do it again and again. The reason is simple: there is no other game anywhere that simulates grand-scale WW2 strategic air combat as this one does. Even my beloved WITP-AE simulates air combat on a very abstract way (although it has research, production and leadership way more developed).

Now, this game is not for the faint of heart or the uncommitted. The interface is dated, the game is complex, it is slow and very, very, very long. If you love wargames, this is a must -- but if you prefer casual gaming like, I dunno, Panzer General, this game is probably way too much sand.

Cheers
fbs
