UI Improvement Thread - 10/2/2009 9:38:08 PM

I'm creating this thread to collect our ideas for tweaking the UI to improve the user experience. It's my opinion that while a huge UI overhaul is not needed, there is definitely an opportunity for improvement with regards to UI consistency - fonts, buttons, layout, etc. I hope that my suggestions are just the beginning of some good interaction between the devs and the user community with regards to the look and feel of the game.

Button Bar
See the image I included below. The button bar has a different background on the Home screen than it does on any other screens. I'm proposing that we choose one and stick with it, so that the transition from the home screen to the other screens (and back) is less jarring. Shaun - I can assist with the art assets if needed.

Buttons
Buttons are all over the place. Take a look at the attachment. We have green rectangles, brown rectangles, and green "Web 2.0" buttons. Maybe I'm the only person this bugs, but again, I'd like to see the game standardize on a shape, color, size and font.

Fonts - Part 1
Easy fix. During the association setup, the section heading fonts are changing. Not just sizes, looks like a font with wider spacing. See below.

Fonts - Part 2
On the Sabermetrics report, we have lots of font over kill. Looks like 3 different fonts and multiple colors. Wouldn't be so bad, but it really doesn't match the look or feel of any other screens.

Regarding the second image, I don't mind the combination of two types of green buttons on the player card. If buttons were standardized I'd rather see the green ones versus the brown ones, but that image on the right would be putting green on green then. How about changing the green buttons to brown for consistency?

It's funny, after I made my post I realized the exact same thing about the "green on green" problem. I like the idea to change to brown (or the wood tone used in the top bar maybe??) for consistency. Thanks Wrath!

I like the idea of using wood tone, but that top bar looks more like a bulletin board or corkboard than wood (though I guess they are all wood or some sort!). Wasn't there a nice wood tone used for the back of the in-game display? That would look nice unless I'm just imagining it.

Oh, I wasn't referring to the image I posted, I was referring to the dark wood bar that is at the top of most of the main screens (Title bar?). Just wondering if it might look cool if the buttons matched?

Ah! Yes. Then I am in agreement. That's the wood tone I was referring to. I just couldn't remember where it was used and was too lazy to open the game.

Player Photos
While I like the way Shaun has added player photo pop-ups to the gameplay screen, with all of that real-estate that we have, it seems silly not to take advantage of it. See the image below. It's taken from another baseball game that I have contributed to. This is how I'd like to see the images displayed in PureSim as well.

I would like the option to have the player photos on the field. With some of the images I'm using for ballparks it may not necessarily lend itself well to having it on at all times.

You aren't the only one. The game just looks dis-jointed with the variety of fonts, buttons, etc.

Yea, I agree too, lots of PureSim styles from the past :) I do believe I have made great progress over the last few months regarding the UI, so hopefully I can turn even more focus to the UI moving forward.

Yeah, take a break from AI and give some love to UI.
