Assistance please for a preson of the meanest understanding!

I want to start drawing with some very basic stuff so I've been trying to open one of the "other" terrain files in the maps gfx using "Paint." Unfortunately, when I open the file it paints the entire background black (see picture.) If I try to change the background color to white or tan, it seems to do ok, but when I run the game, evereything else is whited, blackened or tanned out, including the hex grid, units, etc.

Does anyone have any idea of what on earth I'm doing wrong and what can I do to fix it?

In general - Paint doe's not support PNG format. You should use other software... for more info check this thread http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2247611

Michael,
Use GIMP or Paint.net. (both free).
You need to use LAYERS, and work with TRANSPARENCY.
I use GIMP and find it very easy, it also has a robust forum and wiki help.
It's what I used to make the counters and terrain.
regards
-A
