...the British and French declarations of war finally compleled us to move. We knew that Hitler had gone to far when he occupied the rump of Czechoslovakia -- gaining us what? We already had taken all of that country worth having, and he pushed the democracies to the wall so we could govern another gang of angry Slavs. Hitler promised the General Staff and the Officer Korps that the English wouldn't fight and the French would never go to war without the English. Well, he was wrong, and this morning, at the General Staff conference, he was removed from office, as were Goering, and Himmler and Ribbentrop and several others. Unfortunately, several generals were also killed in the shooting. Goebbels, Hess and several others have apparently stolen an airplane and have disappeared -- tp Russia, France, Italy? We don't know, but if they are found on German soil they will also be "removed."

Our group, comprising 6 regimental and brigade commanders and 4 General Staff colonels has established a new government and are in the process of obtaining oaths of loyalty from the Army and Navy senior officers. After we removed Keitel and Hausser, von Brauchitsch became very cooperative and has been appointed as the new Head of State. But we intend to keep a tight grasp on the controls.

We have ordered representations be made to the British and French governments that we do not want war, but Poland will be dealt with in the manner that has worked in Europe for the last three hundred years. It is necessary that Germany be unshakeably joined with East Prussia, and since that would prevent Poland from any access to the sea, the Poles must be compelled to accept their proper status in Europe.. We have ordered Ambasador Schulenburg to inform the Soviets that we will honor the treaty just signed by Ribbentrop for the partition of Poland. When the Poles see sense, the shooting will stop. We have ordered all naval and air activities against the Allies to be suspended and a strictly defensive posture developed on the Western Front.

Something is happening in Italy as well. Our embasy is surrounded by at least 500 Carabinieri, the borders are sealed and the radios play nothing but martial music since this morning. We are unable to obtain any news, but since Mussolini is hesitating to declare war on the English and the French we must await developments.

We have no reason to war on England and France, but they must recognize Germany's place in the sun.

The war continues in Poland. Due to bad weather and bad luck, we were unable to close the Poznan pocket, but it goes well in the south, where an entire Polish corps is surrounded at Katowice. Casualties are low, but the Luftwaffe has suffered some losses. We will win quickly, then settle this with the democracies.

I promise not to peek at your AAR again, but just had to at the open, to see those counters at work. Glad I did too, or I would have missed out on that very creative and entertaining opening.

What I hear from Whitehall? Machts nichts who's in control in Berlin. Either the Germans remove themselves from Polish soil, or ... we will write a new page in wwratheful history.

Slovakia honours its treaties with the Reich and begins offensive actions against the Polish armed forces. We wish to re-iterate that our quarrel is with the Polish Military and not the Polish people themselves.

In Roma Il Duce' is privately stunned at the removal of Herr Hitler, publically he is non-committal declaring that internal political matters within the Third Reich are exactly that and not appropriate subject matter for commentary by this govornment.

In behind the scenes politicing, Italian ambassadors in London and Paris have called for a withdrawal from this war by England and France, and are making it abundantly clear that the alliance of twenty years before will in no way be rekindled. Italy is staunchly declaring its neutrality in this matter.

Meanwhile reprisals in Ethiopia continue as Italy declares that French supported saboteurs have begun terror bombings that have killed dozens of civilians in a cowardly attack on an aspirin factory in addis abbaba. Benito Mussilini has appealed to the Pope for a strongly worded sanction against the govornment in Paris; however, the Vatican remains silent upon the matter. The newly appointed Pontiff Pius XII expressed his sorrow at the incident and spoke a special mass in St. Peter's Bascillica in memorium for the tragically slain; however, he fell short of laying blame for the incident at anyone's feet.

Men and Women of France.
Since daybreak on September 1, Poland has been the victim of the most brutal and most cynical of aggression. Her frontiers have been violated. Her cities are being bombed. Her army is heroically resisting the invader.
The responsibility for the blood that is being shed falls entirely upon the German Government.
France and England have made countless efforts to safeguard peace. This very morning there was a further urgent intervention in Berlin in order to address to the German Government a last appeal for reason and request that it stop hostilities.
During this attempt we were informed that Herr Hitler had been removed from power. Even though we applaud this particular action taken by elements of the German military our request was still met with a refusal.
Having rebuffed the efforts of all the men of goodwill who recently raised their voices in favor of the peace of the world. There can be only one conclusion drawn, Germany desires the destruction of Poland, so as to be able to dominate Europe quickly and to enslave France.
In rising against the most frightful of tyrannies, in honoring our word, we fight to defend our soil, our homes, our liberties. I am conscious of having worked unremittingly against the war until the last minute.
Now I must greet with emotion and affection our young soldiers, who go forth to perform the sacred task which we ourselves did perform before them. They can have full confidence in their chiefs, who are worthy of those who have previously led France to victory.
The cause of France is identical with that of Righteousness. It is the cause of all peaceful and free nations. It will be victorious.
Men and Women of France!
We are waging war because it has been thrust on us. Every one of us is at his post, on the soil of France, on that land of liberty where respect of human dignity finds one of its last refuges. You will all co-operate, with a profound feeling of union and brotherhood, for the salvation of the country.

The Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda issued the following statement at 1430 hours, Thursday, September 7, 1939, from the Ministry Building:

To the Peoples of the World.

Germany is once again in the sure hands of its faithful defender, the Heer. Politicians have tried to lead Germany down a road of treachery and dishonor, and have paid the ultimate forfeit for their crimes. All free men of honesty and valor should look to their own countries and the politicians who lead them. Are they acting in your interests, or their own? Do they listen to you, or are they in the pockets of the industrialists who fatten on your taxes, while urging the purchase of more guns, more ships, and more bombs?
The German people have no quarrel with the people of the World. They are acting to reunite their country which was torn apart by a harsh, vindictive treaty, imposed on them by force of arms. They have engaged a backward, corrupt regime, the creation of foreign politicians and bankers. This conspiracy of corruption sought to keep two historic sections of our country separated by an artificial and unnatural creation which had been erased from the face of Europe three hundred years ago. During all those years in which Germany looked after the people of the East, Poland had never troubled the peace of Europe. Since Poland was resurrected, however, there has been nothing but war, riot and chaos. Again and again, the German people have tried to reason with the gang of criminals who have enslaved the uneducated, superstitious Poles, and over and over we have been rebuffed with curses and scorn. We could no longer stand idly by while our brothers and sisters suffered murder and persecution.
Citizens of France, People of England, your politicians tell you that you will be forced to fight for your homes and countries. But it is a lie! No German soldier stands on your countries soil. We have even taken a step back from your borders and ordered our armies on your frontiers to stand down, lest there be any accident. Our navies have put back into their ports, our Air Forces, capable of stomping entire cities flat, have returned to their landing grounds. We do not seek war with you, we only ask for justice for our poor, divided country.
War can only come from the actions of your politicians. We have dealt with ours -- they will trouble us no more. Will you die; will your families die, for the sake of your politicians and their lies?

The Kremlin watches not without satisfaction as the degenerate countries of Central and Western Europe spend their life blood. Once they have weakened each other sufficiently, we may benevolently offer our own enlightended form of government to the rest of Europe and beyond. We are at this very moment developing the vehicles that will carry the message to the West.

In the meanwhile we are pleased at the German obedience regarding the R-M pact and we will lean back and watch carefully. We consider even to send a few train loads of surplus resources to the Germans as we need to make sure their industry can manage to take on the capitalist British and French.

The Kremlin will soon publish its own independent war diary and - despite Beria's protests - will not read here any more.

The diabolical nature of Germany, confirmed by it's sudden invasion of our sovereign nation and the blatant violation of the non-aggression pact the Germans signed a with Poland in 1934.

German demands sent to Poland on 25 Aug 1939 - The return of Danzig to Germany. Rail and road access across the corridor between Germany and East Prussia. The cession to Germany any Polish territory formerly of pre-WW1 Germany that hosts 75% or more ethnic Germans. With the ultimate goal being the cession of the Polish Corridor to Germany.

Is all the proof that the freedom loving nations of the world need to see that together we must eradicate the German nation once and for all.

Poland re-established by the Versailles Treaty had been forced to rely on her own resources during armed conflicts with Germany, Czechoslovakia, Lithuania, and Ukrainian nationalists, as well as a major war with the Soviet Union. We prevailed then we shall prevail now.

This is a certainty due to the extreme courage displayed by the our armed forces as they engage the German hordes across a wide front. Also the great nations of France and England having seen the errors they made by attempting to appease this nation of thugs, will soon join us in this struggle to defeat these madmen of Europe.

To the citizens of Poland, have faith the plans to defend our homeland developed by Gen. Kutrzeba are going well and in our time of need God shall not forsake us.

S, alt komerad, I can't really speak for my coleagues, but I would certainly enjoy tactical and strategic commentary from 4 of the strongest wargamers that I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Pehaps we could all make an agreement to "lock" or classify our individual threads at some point when we need to maintain secrecy, or, we could continue with the current "press release" style where only information that would only have been available to the general public.

As far as I am concerned, I am not troubled if the rest of the 5Play gang read or contribute to this thread. We may not hear a great deal more freom the Council of Colonels War Diary, however! I will notify the 5Players if I choose to classify the thread. If anyone has a problem with 5players reading their threads, please notify us.

Since I am the Fascist partner in this war I will be commenting here unless Michael the Pole would prefer I start my own thread instead... MMmmm perhaps call it "Eating at the Fascists kiddie table: Italy and Slovakia" or something :)

Although I am desperately hoping we get Spain to join us :) that would be fun since I am running all the Axis allies.

Rome - Sept 9 1939

Reports are coming in that Danish commandos infiltrated the country estate of Benito Mussilini. Information is sketchy at this time but what is known now is that the entire estate is on fire. Italian police state that recent actions in Ethiopia have brought about this suprising event. It is not known at this time if Il Duce' survived the attack.

6:21am
Three bodies have been recovered and while the names are being withheld, they have been positively identified as Danish nationals. Official reports are rather bare, but sources speaking off the record state that the stark reality is that the commandos are civilians that were previously members of the Danish military.

7:14am
It is confirmed that Il Duce' and his family were not present when the attack took place. Given the recent turmoil in Deutschland a planned vacation at the mountainous retreat had been postponed and instead he and his entire family had taken a trip to Munich to discuss matters of trade between the two nations.

1:26pm
Rushed back to Milan aboard an He111 airframe Benito Mussilini made the following statement

"...let them bury themselves in butter and chocolate.. their acts of injustice shall not be allowed to stand. Danish nationals only recently removed from the military forces of Denmark and their puppet state Iceland have prosecuted an attack of the most dastardly and cowardly manner as ever has been witnessed in the annals of history. Over the next few days details of the investigation will be revealed, but for now it is enough to know who has attacked us. Our embassy in Copenhagen has been closed and the Diplomats and their staff have retired to The Hague in hopes that from their a diplomatic solution to this situation can be managed. Until such is forthcoming the armed forces of this nation are on the highest levels of alert. I jave ordered the Regia Marina to begin prosecuting all vessels of Danish origin to be sunk upon the high seas. Let the cowards hide behind a supposed feeling of righteous superiority, the events in Ethiopia are unfortunate, but they do not justify such an act of aggression against us. As of forty five minutes ago a state of war exists between Italy and all her colonies and possessions against the state of Denmark and her allied powers in Iceland and Greenland. We did not wish to be pulled into this conflagaration.. but rest assured we are prepared"

Paris � A source working in the Danish Embassy overheard Officials discussing the the recent incident in Italy. They believe it all to be a fabrication to justify the

Declaration of War against Denmark. "If the recovered bodies are Danes at all, they were probably tourists lured to the location and then murdered to be used as

propaganda."In response to this statement a second Official said "Mussolini is mad, what does he call himself, "Il Duce', The Leader" it should be "The Duck"

all he does is walk around quacking."

This is the 1st time in a long time, that I've played any game against an actual real live opponent. I can state without reservation it's a wonderful thing.

Having never defended Poland, I'm not sure how I'm doing. I decided the best I could do was just get in the way and try to delay the inevitable. I used my limited production to put as many divisions in the field as possible. As a result I've taken quite a beating.

Below is the situation after 5 turns. Please don't judge too harshly, well on second thought go ahead if you want to.

3:36am October 18th 1939 Rome

Italian Land Naval and Aeronautical forces began an operation against Yugoslavia.� Recent events have compelled the otherwise peaceloving Italian nation to undertake this campaign.� Il Duce' while giving a speech entitled "blood alone moves the wheels of history" made the following statements.

...the cowardly attack upon my country villa by the vile Danish has finally been sorted out as to particulars.� Irregular forces under Danish command and with the complicity of Yugoslavian Communists�near the border at�Trieste perpetrated this deed with the full knowledge and support of both the Danish and Yugoslavian regimes.� Forces have now moved to put an end to this meddlesome state we have up till now met with brotherly affection and a desire only for the betterment of our peoples.� A division of Airborne troops have landed in Split and aided the insertion of several crack units in debarkation at the port facilities there.� Forces of Albanian territorials as well as regular units of the Italian Army have struck forth from Tirana, as well as motorized and armoured forces from near Trieste have captured Ljubljana in a lightning campaign.� We expect Zagreb to fall within the week and the whole of Yugoslavia to capitulate before the snows of winter grace the Italian Alps..

So there you have it, Italy has declared war on Yugoslavia, and in shocking news has uncovered proof of Yugoslavian involvement in the 'Danish Incident' as war still rages in Poland the world sits shocked at the powderkeg that is apparently central europe.

A Radio address delivered to the people of France by French President �douard Daladier

At the end of three months of war one thing has become clear, Germany seeks to establish a domination over the world completely different from any known in history.
The domination at which the Nazis aim is not limited to the displacement of the balance of power and the imposition of supremacy of one nation. It seeks the systematic and total destruction of those conquered, and it does not treaty with the nations which have been subdued. They destroy them and take from them their whole political and economic existence and seek to deprive them of their history and their culture. These Despots consider them only as vacant territory over which they have every right.

The human beings who constitute these nations are for them only cattle to be massacred or migrated. They are compelled to make room for their conquerors. These madmen do not trouble themselves to impose war tribute, instead they rob them of all their wealth, and, to prevent any revolt, wipe out their leaders and scientifically seek the physical and moral degradation of those whose independence they have stolen.

Under this domination, in thousands of towns and villages across Europe there are millions of human beings now living in misery which they could never have imagined.

Austria, Bohemia, Slovakia, Poland and Denmark are now only lands of despair. Their whole peoples have been deprived of the means of moral and material happiness. Subdued by treachery or brutal violence, they have no other recourse than to work for their executioners who grant them scarcely enough to assure the most miserable existence. There is being created a world of masters and slaves in the image of Germany herself.

Yet, while Germany is crushing beneath her tyranny the men of every race and language, she is herself being crushed beneath her own servitude and her domination mania. The German worker and peasant are the slaves of their Nazi masters while the worker and peasant of Bohemia and Poland have become in turn slaves of these slaves. Nazi propaganda is entirely founded on the exploitation of the weakness of the human heart. It does not address itself to the strong or the heroic.

It tells the rich they are going to lose their money.

It tells the worker this is a rich man's war.

It tells the intellectual and the artist that all he cherished is being destroyed by war.

It tells the lover of good things that soon he would have none of them.

It is those who speak this way who have destroyed or confiscated all the wealth they could lay their hands on, who have reduced their workers to slavery, who have ruined all intellectual liberty, who have imposed terrible privations on millions of men and women and who have made murder their law. What do contradictions matter to them if they can lower the resistance of those who wish to bar the path of their ambitions to be masters of the world?

Our courageous military will soon engage the German horde and the entire nation will support their every action. For us there is more to do than merely win the war and we shall win it.

We must also win a victory far greater than that of arms. In this world of masters and slaves, which those madmen who rule at Berlin are seeking to forge, we must also save liberty and human dignity.
