Some wargamers here might be interested to learn that a new version of Panzer Generals is on its way...

Well, good news if you're an XBox Live Console user.

The rest of us PC owners can check out the boardgame version, I suppose... ;(

Here's a link to the official site:

Panzer General: Allied Assault

An intro video can be found at the developers site.

The only thing that seems to have in common with Panzer General is the name.

Bloodshot,

If you like Panzer General, have you already had a look at these two games?

It says this is based on the Panzer General series, but.....1)Failing to see the connection(this looks nothing like the original PG) and 2)Video game version only for XBOX Live is pathetic.Give the video game version to people who actually care about the series.....the PC players....no console player knows what the heck Panzer General was.

maybe I'm completely wrong with that assessment, but I would tend to say that you forgot a matrix game on that list:

WW2: Time of Wrath . (sorry of I do not provide the link, but it's easy to locate)

I cannot say anything about operation Barbarossa. I agree that Commander-Europe at War, which I do own, does provide some Panzer-General feeling. But personally, as soon as I had bought Time of Wrath, my impression was that this is a better replacement for the PG series. Just my 2cts, though.

except for those who played the PS1 version of PG - but i doubt there were too many.

I remember playing that version and it had to reload when you wanted to look at the strategic map due to lack of memory

Hartwig, thanks for chiming in. I hadn't heard that feedback before but I'm happy to point people at WW2: Time of Wrath as well. I considered the other two closer to Panzer General in gameplay, but WW2: Time of Wrath is a fine game too.

Regards,

Yeah, you can't play REAL turn based strategy wargames without a keyboard.

1)You missed my point.I was merely saying that most modern console players aren't going to what the original Panzer General was.

2)I didn't say that Strategy games suck on a console(though most do). Before, I played a game called Advance Wars 2 and Dual Strike on the game boy and Nintendo DS before I moved to computer games.

So, 3)Cut the crap save it for someone else.I'm not trying degrade consoles, I was merely saying I was disappointed the video game version was console only.

Your words:

I'm a console player and I owned Panzer General.

If you want to walk your words back now then that's fine but don't blame me for your inability to properly express yourself, crapmeister.

Yes, saying "no" was over generalizing, I admit that.I think can properly express myself just fine, thank you.If you want start name calling I can do this all day pops.

And, you were the one getting upset over one little over generalization....I swear sometimes you guys are analyzing everything I say just to find something to get mad at.

I'd thought about mentioning the PS version too, then thought that something like this could happen and didn't...

I loved that game; spent many hours on it. Still have it, and my Atari 800 packed away in the garage somewhere.

Well, wargame releases have become rare these days and the better ones are primarily re-releases of older titles, like CC, CoG:EE, WitP:AE, EDBTR. Indie Studios (i.e. Battlefront) are approaching the mainstream an even Matrix publishes plenty of casual strategy lately.

What I'd like to see is boardgame publishers, like DVG, filling the gap by porting their games to Windows.

I tried the demo on XBOX Live and there was more to it than I expected.

True, it has little in common with the original but it does scratch the same itch. Beer & Pretzels - Easy to Learn/Difficult to Master - Turn-based Strategy.

Well worth the $10 (800 Pts) if looking for the above.

If Matrix were to release the exact same game I'm sure it would be well received by most.

I played Panzer General on the PS1 when all I had was a small TV, and was too poor to afford a computer. So I bought the PS1 and Panzer General, and enjoyed many a game during the long Alaskan winter nights. I still play the open-source clone on my Linux box occasionally: lgeneral. Commander in Europe reminded me of Panzer General, even down to the small and restricted resolution, ha ha. Of course Panzer General had the excuse of being a mid-1990's game.

I just wanted to point out, in case it hadn't been already, that the game is based upon/dual released as an actual boardgame:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/55679

I paid for the XBL version as it played quit nice, interface included.

Though I'm sure the name helps it's not just a money grab. They wouldn't have gone through the trouble to produce the actual physical boardgame if it were.

I think their hearts are at least partially in it, as with any boardgame publisher these days....
