Today, we welcomed a new player to the ANW MP community. Ron James has been playing Harpoon for nearly 20 years, but never played MP until today. We selected Serpent's Island, made with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB.

quote:

Starting from 1878 back when the Treaty of Berlin offered it to Romania and until today, this piece of rock has played various roles that have reflected the interests of the countries in the region. After being a simple location for a lighthouse used for guiding navigation, it became a strategic point for the USSR, the latter annexing it in 1948 through a simple handing over minute, out of the desire to complete its control of the Danube by taking advantage of the military and strategic context of that time. After the fall of the Soviet Empire when it became part of Ukraine, the latter being USSR's successor state, the island has changed its nature and even its importance, with its statute now having major implications in establishing and delimitating [sic] Romania's and Ukraine's territorial seas and continental shelf. And those implications stem from the perspective and goal of exploiting the area's reserves of more than ten million tones of oil and 100 billion cubic meters of natural gas.

The basic treaty between the two countries, a treaty that Romania signed on June 2, 1997 under pressure to fulfil the border stability criteria needed to join NATO, has re-opened the issue in the context of subsequent border delimitation [sic] negotiations.

Ron commanded the Ukrainians attempting to impose their will upon the region in defiance of the International Court decision while I controlled the Romanian forces ordered to assert their sovereignty.

Both sides approached the disputed region cautiously and under [EmCon] Emissions Control so as not to reveal any information to the opponent. NATO and Russian forces were actively emitting ECM so I didn't feel the need to add to the electronic noise. Frigates Regina Maria and Regele Ferdinand slowed down and mimicked the local fishing vessels while paying attention to their sonar and ESM watches.

Soon enough, two Matka corvettes revealed themselves along with a Krivak frigate. Each target was taken under fire by a brace of Exocet SSMs. Unfortunately, only one Matka was sunk thus demanding a second salvo. After surviving the first wave of SSMs, Ron returned fire from a distant Tarantul corvette. The missiles crossed paths in mid-air and three more Ukrainian ships were soon sinking.

Luckily (for me), the Ukrainian return fire attracted the attention of the Russians on patrol who proceeded to shoot down the Ukrainian missiles while opening fire on the Ukrainian navy. Only a few Sunburn missiles got penetrated the concentrated defenses to strike my two frigates. The damage was severe (65% and 76%), but both vessels stayed afloat.

Out of missiles and out of luck, the Russians battered the surviving Ukrainian forces into submission.

Thanks to Ron for a challenging match and hope for many more in the future.

I really did think my naval force was superior until them Exocet's turned up and
really did ruin my parade. Thanks Herman , I am looking forward to many more.

AoA (Jeronimo Chiecchio) made a return appearance to his MP Server. We elected to try out the new scenario, Parting Gift, by Freek Schepers made with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB.

quote:

Just before the final surrender of Argentine troops in Port Stanley, Britain receives word of frantic activity at Argentina's nuclear facilities.

The US Air Force Space Command reports the test firing of a Condor II Argentine Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missile has taken place with the missile passing over the Argentine tracking station in Kings Bay, Antarctica.

Britain decides that it must act to preempt desperate last-minute Argentine actions.

AoA took his usual side as Argentina while I commanded the UK. My objectives were to bomb the nuclear plant and research facilities.

I decided that stealth would be my best option. So, I maintained EmCon [Emissions Control] and turned off most of my radar. However, I was essentially blind so my Type 42 Air Defense destroyers were ordered to provide Picket duties. Since they were already radiating, they also emitted ECM to jam Argentine systems.

As we both slowly scouted the area, a bogey appeared on DDG Exeter's radar scope and a Harrier moved out to investigate. Then, neat as you please, the bogey just disappeared. Not long afterwards, it re-appeared a few hundred miles to the south. A second Harrier moved to investigate. This time, contact was lost just as the Harrier approached radar range. The pilot searched with active radar and was rewarded by a blip running away at low altitude.

He close to visual range and found that it was a 707 airliner converted for maritime reconnaissance. "Tally Ho!" and he went in for a gun kill to conserve his precious (and limited) Sidewinder missiles. He raked the left wing with cannon fire and sent it spiralling into the sea. No kill like a gun kill.

Not long afterwards, another blip appeared near the Invincible. Another Harrier moved to intercept and found an S-2 Tracker which he also killed with guns.

This brought a cry over the Guard Frequency from AoA. "Argggh! You've killed all my Recon assets!" (Thanks for the Free Intell, Jeronimo).

We decided to save at this point and pick up the game another day. Thanks for the session and use of the server.

Today, we welcomed a new player to the ANW MP community. Capitan Piluso has never played MP until today. We selected Dawn Patrol, made with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB.

I commanded the Soviets while CaptPiluso controlled the Norwegians.

We both started out cautiously sweeping forward like two blind boxers in a darkened room. Suddenly, one of my Nanuchka missile corvettes reported visual contact on a pair of Hugin missile boats!

The gun crews immediately opened fire while the commander screamed for the radar to be activated along with the ECM systems and called for Flank speed from the engine room. If I could see the smaller Hugin boats, he could probably see me. Soon, the radar screen was filled with both ship contacts and airborne missiles.

The guns managed to kill the two closest ships while SS-N-9 Sirens were dispatched for the more distant targets. My boat shot down 4 Penguins, but soon 2 more struck and she blew up.

My missiles soon found their targets, too. Several explosions were registered from the Norwegian flotilla, but he was fighting back hard. Another Nanuchka fell to Penguin missiles before her return salvo killed the Norwegian corvette. It was all over in a few savage minutes.

Thanks a fun game, CapitanPiluso and I hope for many more in the future.

After a month, AoA (Jeronimo Chiecchio) and I finally found time to continue our scenario, Parting Gift, by Freek Schepers made with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB.

After killing his recon assets, I still had to attack his nuclear facilities. Vulcans approached from Ascension Island. Once they were close enough, I launched the air groups from the carriers. Invincible was targeted against the Atucha nuclear reactor while Hermes took on the Bariloche research facillities.

The Invincible group was detected 60 miles from the target and shot to ribbons by Mirage fighters coming in on afterburner. They barely managed to fire any Sidewinders in their own defence before the entire strike was annihilated.

The Hermes group arrived unscathed (only because AoA was pre-occupied with a phone call and not paying attention). They targeted the key research facility and destroyed it under an avalanche of bombs and 30mm gunfire. The Vulcan strike arrived at the Atucha site at the same time and unloaded 21 bombs on the reactor, but was unable to destroy it even though it was left on fire. The Vulcan was subsequently shot down by a SAM.

AoA returned and thought that he had lost the game. I encouraged him to continue to play at least for the tie since he could still deny me victory.

Although Argentine recon assets were destroyed, the Russians decided to intervene and provided AoA with the necessary intelligence on the whereabouts of my Invincible task force. Not long after, DDG Antrim detected several groups of unidentified aircraft on her radar screens. The swarms converged on Invincible and she had a lone surviving Harrier for defence.

The Harrier challenged a pair of Mirage and was promptly shot down, but took both of the Argentine aircraft with him. Now, only SAMs and AAA were available for defense. DDG Antrim gave a good account of herself and emptied her Sea Slug magazines and claiming 8 aircraft before being smothered by a swarm of Pucara attack planes. Over 150 rockets were fired and she sustained 25% damage. However, severe flooding in her engineering spaces soon saw her slip beneath the waves.

The main body of the group also gave a good account of itself. CVH Invincible took out 8 more planes with her Sea Dart SAMs, but a Canberra survived to hit her with an ASM for 12% damage. The same plane then went on to bomb the Argonaut and cripple her with 47% damage. She would continue to flood until her damage control parties contained the damage at the 96% level. She crept away from the area at a mere 3 knots.

With no more strike assets by either side, this battle concluded in a draw. Had AoA paid more attention, I think that he would have easily wiped out both strike groups. I'm not sure that the UK side can ever win this battle.

Thanks to Freek for the scenario and to AoA for a fine battle.

Thanks for making my day AoA and Herman! Very nice AAR!

Its only through such AARs (esp MP) that designers get a feel for how balanced the scens are. I think this one can be won from either side against the AI (and that was tested exhaustively) but MP between two good players may well favour a draw, the British Vulcan is hard to detect before it strikes due to its jammer and the Argentine airstrike when focussing all aircraft 'same time on top' on the weakest carrier group is very hard to beat. But that is 'expert'harpooning guys! Finally in MP Argentine fighters coming in on burner have a good chance to still fire their short ranhe AAR even in the face of the Harriers longer range sidewinders, and beat the harrier strikes.

If you think anything could be tweaked - then let me know, but it sounds this scen has become a nicely balanced mid-sized scen.

Regards

Freek

Ed and Herman met yesterday for another MP game on AoA's server.

They selected 'Advanced Guard' from the Falklands battleset as they were looking for Surface Action. Herman Played UK and Ed played Argentina.

I joint them as a spectator (as I'd built the scen exactly one year ago).

Both sides have a SAG and a Support Group. The Support group needs to be brought to a PZ and the SAG is to defend it and seek out the enemy. Both sides have several helo's (Wasp or Alouette), all without radar. The OOB were nearly identical; same SAMs (Sea Darts), same SSM (Exocets), same radar ranges and the same gun calibres.

Both Players sent ot Helo patrols in the night and started moving their Support Groups to their destinations, pulling closer and closer together. Eds Helo's seemed to be converging on the ESM track of and innocent neutral.

Hermans tiny Wasps got a visual on the Argentine ships during the night without being spotted. He brought in another Helo and his SAG. Having closed to Exocet range he fired 4 missiles, which hit one ship in Eds lightly defended Amphib group. Eds Type 42 were with the distant SAG.
The Argentines returned fire with their Exocet, but these were shot down by the UK Sea Darts and even by Sea Cats fired from a Type 21.

The British then closed to gun range, and as they outgunned their opponents 75 and 100mm guns the group was son sinking.

The Argentine SAG raced in and at close range an engagement with Sea Darts and guns ensued. Both sides had Type 42 destroyers, and all ships were damaged. Argentina's ships sank while UKs remained afloat with 30-70% damage.

Meanwhile, the UK Support group on its way to the destination ran accross an Argentine submarine which was preparing to fire its torpedoes when a Wasp helo dropped on it. This ensured British Victory.

Nice AAR.  Always good to know the view from an impartial observer.

When I engaged the Convoy, I thought that I was firing on the main body.  Once the units in the convoy were confirmed, I wondered if the game was over for me since I was out of SSMs and his covering group was closing from the south.

Ed did a good job of closing and engaging from maximum range.  Luckily for me (and unluckily for Ed), he fired two separate waves of Exocet SSMs.  Only one struck from the first salvo, but it gave me time to re-load and engage the second wave successfully.  Unfortunately, while occupied with the SSMs, our two groups were still closing on one another.  Just as the second wave of SSMs was brought down, my ships came under Sea Dart fire and then gunfire.

Not long afterwards, Broadsword and Arrow were taking hits and flooding badly.  I returned fire and finally suppressed the Argentines, but not before I had several ships in the 70% damage range and still flooding or ablaze.  Ed conceded defeat, but those ships probably would not have lasted long.

Thanks to Ed for a fine match and to Freek for writing a fun scenario.

After an absence of many months, Eds finally found his way back to the NW MP server. We managed to lure Freek Schepers into a 3-sided game and selected Carrier Exercise, by Freek Schepers and made with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB.

quote:

Halfway through 2008, Europe started to realize that the Asian nations' sustained economic growth would eventually lead to a strong new powerhouse. Asian countries already built or bought several very effective carriers and, with China laying down both a 45000 ton and a 96000 ton aircraft carrier, Europe decided that carriers would become critical in the future.
While England's 2 new carriers are still years away, the time was ripe for some serious exercise.

I commanded the Italian/Spanish carrier group while Freek took the Russian side and Ed played as the French.

I was equipped with Harriers and Sea King AEW helicopters. I didn't think that either of them had much chance of survival in an environment dominated by Flanker, Fulcrum, and Rafale jet fighters. So, I opted for a conservative approach and kept them close to home.

I stayed radar silent and had two helos up to (hopefully) provide some ESM warning. One of my ships was actively jamming. Although it might be detected, I wanted the enemy to close on my position in order to try and identify the group before it could attack. This way, I expected him to use active radar and thus reveal himself to my helos on patrol.

As usual, no battle plan survives contact with the enemy...

My group was sailing for its destination while I had my fingers crossed. An E-2 Hawkeye was detected by its characteristic radar emissions. I couldn't hide from it, but I was gambling that my jamming prevented solid contacts for the AEW plane.

Suddenly, one of my helos has an 'Oscar Sierra' moment. He broke radio silence and said, "Oh, S***!. Flanker at 4 o'clock!" just before he dove for the ocean. He never made it as the Flanker raked him with cannon fire and a possible missile. His warning was sufficient for the two Harriers on patrol who immediately loosed AMRAAM missiles at the Flankers. The Flankers returned fire, but AMRAAM won the day and both Sukhois died in fireballs for no further loss by the Spaniards.

Evidently, the Flankers had been searching with their infrared sensors. Unbeknownst to Freek, Ed had coordinated an attack that took advantage of the Flanker intrusion. As soon as the Flankers were down, other contacts popped upon on the screen. From their speed, I suspected that they were groups of Rafales, Super Etendards, and a lone Hawkeye in the distance to coordinate the search and strike.

My Harriers crept in low and managed to ambush four of the Rafales. One was caught in the act and died from a MICA IR missile. With their fighter cover exterminated, the Super Etendards beat a hasty retreat. The slow speed of the Harriers did not permit pursuit.

At this point, we called it a day and saved the game for future completion. Thanks to Freek and Eds for a fine battle.

Tried to finish up our scenario, today.

My Harriers got lucky and ran over a pair of Super Etendards hiding down low while they searched for the elusive E-2 Hawkeye. They dispatched both with a pair of Sidewinders. Afterwards, RB2 radar emissions were detected from additional Rafales so they decided to beat a hasty retreat. They managed to shoot down Rafales because they had radar coverage from the ships. Now, the tables were turned and they were potentially entering the French radar coverage. That E-2 would live to see another day.

As the fighters re-armed, a second wave of Bogies was detected to the South. As the Combat Air Patrol moved to intercept, a swarm of ANS missiles was detected inbound. There were plenty of fighters airborne and, along with the ships' SAMs, all 24 were brought down successfully. Whew.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=25749&stc=1&d=1247776780

Unfortunately, the ANW AI formation patrol bug kicked in and ruined this game when it started launching planes all over the place. Since Ed and I had pretty much lost control of our forces, I decided that I had enough of this buggy behaviour and quit the game. Just another fine session ruined by the bugginess of ANW.

At this point, we called it a day. Thanks to Freek and Eds for a fine battle while it lasted. What a waste of time.

I was playing the Russian side in this 3-way scenario.

My Akula sub got a passive detection off DDG Evertsen (attached to the UK group) and I plotted a rough intercept course. I sent out a helo to give the Akula a better sense where the UK group was. I planned to use the Akula to intercept the AI-controlled UK-side, and my planes to attack any of the two players I was up against.

After losing two Flankers bumping into the Spanish, and not detecting his ships, I realised only my helo's had surface radars, and I launched 5 of them to find the Spanish/Italian Fleet, nearby the deathpoint of the Flankers.

I also Escorted the sole EAW helo trying to find the UK-group with Flankers. This proved very frustrating, two Flankers were suddenly lost to Aster missiles, indicating I'd found the UK-group, but the Uncertainty Zone was huge (thousands of sqr miles) and even the AEW-helo got me nowhere.

A replacement team of Flankers got on station protecting the helo when the UK sent out no less than 8 Harriers GR9 to kill my AEW helo. They succeeded at cost of 7 of its own.

At this point we decided to call it a day as both Herman and Eds planes had started flying around their formations under AI control. The UZ-s prevented me from finding the enemy, and seemed to be centred on a far away point where none of my units were - very frustrating!

AoA (Jeronimo Chiecchio) had the weekend off and wanted a game to start it off right. We chose The Supply War, by Freek Schepers made with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB.

quote:

By the 20th of May, there were strong indications that invasion was imminent. Destroyers had shelled Argentine coastal garrisons and rumours were rampant that SAS troops were on the ground. During the night, an Argentine freighter was shelled by an unknown British warship in Falkland Sound.

The success of the invasion would depend largely on the British ability to re-supply the beachhead; dependant upon a supply line stretching 8000nm between the UK and the Falklands and maintained by 50 ships of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary and a selection of leased merchant ships whose crew were being paid 150% danger pay.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=25776&stc=1&d=1248423839

I commanded the UK forces while AoA took the role of his homeland, Argentina. My orders were to reach certain geographic points by the end of the game. The distances involved meant that I had to divide my transports and distribute my escorts. I decided to send a fast group under the escort of FF Galatea while FF Plymouth protected the slower transports along with a minesweeper.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=25777&stc=1&d=1248423847

Not long after, ESM detected an active radar bathing the formation. Crap, within an hour, AoA had already located me and had my direction of travel and general speed. I immediately launched my sole available Harrier to try and kill this snooper, but with no success. AoA deftly probed my defences and disappeared over, and over, again by climbing and diving below the radar horizon. Lacking sensors, the Harrier was unable to prosecute the contacts successfully.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=25778&stc=1&d=1248423858

I had my own ASW helos aloft and acting as AEW platforms. Two high speed contacts were detected to the north. They had to be naval vessels as no civilian ships would be travelling at 38 knots. Two Wasp helos armed with AS.12 missiles were sent to deal with them while a Lynx helo with Sea Skua followed to back them up.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=25779&stc=1&d=1248423867

The first Wasp successfully launched two AS.12s which struck and killed the first Intrepida gunboat. However, this alerted the second one to the attack. The second Wasp was also able to launch his two missiles, but they were shot down by the alert ships. To add insult to injury, the gunboat shot down the Wasp just as it was leaving AAA range. The Lynx arrived to avenge them by slamming two Sea Skua into the other gunboat.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=25780&stc=1&d=1248423874

The pesky 707 kept buzzing my ships. Finally, it came a bit too close for its own good. My Harrier managed to launch and intercept it before it managed to once again vanish below the radar horizon.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=25782&stc=1&d=1248424104

A pair of surface contacts was acting suspiciously SE of the convoys. I was not certain if they were hostile or not so I sent the Harrier to investigate. If hostile, at least it stood a chance of escape. As soon as it launched, a bogey was detected over the Queen Elizabeth II. Air attack! A Canberra dropped two bombs on here but missed. It then strafed the liner and started a fire. The Harrier had just cleared the deck and was able to loose two Sidewinders before the Canberra could do any more damage. The fire eventually burned 3% of the QE2, but was finally contained by the enthusiastic efforts of the 5,000 soldiers aboard.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=25781&stc=1&d=1248424090

As the Harrier neared the ships, AAA fire was detected from one of the ships and it beat a hasty retreat. I kept an eye on them, but it was cruising at 16kts speed while my convoys were making 13kts and 18kts. Hopefully, I would be able to pass them by without engaging.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=25783&stc=1&d=1248424111

Luck was not on my side. The ARA Segui accelerated and plotted an intercept course with my slower convoy. Hope as I may that I could evade him, his 30kt speed said otherwise. The FF Plymouth moved to interject herself between the threat and her charges. After a long-range gunnery duel, the Segui was left sinking.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=25784&stc=1&d=1248424124

Suddenly, the fast convoy detected a submarine on active sonar at a range of 3nm. FF Galatea immediately warned the convoy to scatter and launched an Ikara at the target while calling in ASW helos to prosecute it. As soon as the ships changed course, a salvo of torpedoes was detected from the sub.

The Ikara missed and a second was fired. It also missed or was deceived by a decoy. The closest ASW helo arrived and promptly dropped two more torpedoes on the target. Both missed! Again, to add insult to injury, the sub surfaced and shot down the helo as it hovered. A third Ikara was dropped in the water and this one finally locked onto the sub and sank it.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=25785&stc=1&d=1248424136

The volley of torpedoes scattered the convoy, but they were detected in time and evaded successfully. With no further opposition, the convoys both arrived at their destinations and victory was granted.

Thanks to Freek for fine scenario and to AoA for a challenging match.

After skipping our previous weekly engagement, Eds was eager for another battle. We elected to try Any Port in a Storm, made with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB.

Although war at sea has been raging for several days, many merchant ships have not yet made it to safe haven. Additionally, many NATO warships have not yet organized themselves into task forces. There is a race between NATO combatants to shepherd the scattered merchantmen to port and Soviet submarines to sink as many of these merchantmen as possible.

I commanded the Soviets while Ed took the NATO side. My only offensive units were the submarines. I also had a squadron of Bear bombers, but they were configured for ground attack and not much help in the anti-shipping role. I also had a few Bear reconnaissance aircraft and a pair of Antonov jammers as well as a few intelligence trawlers. I didn't expect the trawlers to survive for very long, at all.

The war got off to an auspicious start as an Akula SSN detected a Perry-class frigate running right at her. She prepared her torpedo tubes and just waited as it came into range. She was detected just as she opened her torpedo tube doors to fire. However, it was too late to stop. Three Type-65-76 torpedoes were fired along with a pair of USET-80s. Unfortunately, all the torpedoes started chasing distant targets instead of their intended.

She tried over, and over, to engage the frigate. All attempts ended in futililty due to this buggy ANW behaviour. Although one of her torpedoes eventually struck a merchant, she was prosecuted by an ASW helo and killed subsequently.

Not long afterwards, SSGN Charlie II detected another target about to run near her. It was a 67,000t supertanker. The Charlie loaded her torpedo tubes with SAET-60M torpedoes and moved to intercept. It did not appear as though any escort was around so she took her time to perfect the firing solution before firing a torpedo from 3nm away. It missed, as did a second one. The third one finally struck and broke the keel of the ship.

Right away, another contact was detected. A Broadsword-class frigate could be heard racing in at 30kts with her sonar pinging away like mad. The Charlie calculated a firing solution for her SS-N-9 Siren missiles and loosed them at a range of 18nm. The sudden attack caught the frigate by surprise and the missiles struck turning the ship into a fireball. However, her helo must have survived to launch and was able to successfully prosecute the Charlie in return. Ed kept dropping torpedo after torpedo on the already dead submarine, but I wasn't going to tell him otherwise. Every torpedo he wasted on the Charlie would be one less weapon he could employ against a real sub. Hopefully, he would run out of torpedoes before I ran out of submarines. Tie score.

The Bears were keeping busy attacking Ed's air bases. Although they were not massed efforts, individual Bears crept in and launched their AS-4 Kitchen missiles to knock out hangars and ammo dumps. Within a day or so, Stornoway was inoperative from damage. Her Tornado fighters did manage to exact a price from the raids. One Antonov-12 Cub jamming plane was caught by a pair of interceptors and shot down as she was covering an inbound Bear raid.

At this point, we called it a day and saved the game for future completion. Thanks to Ed for a fine battle, thus far.

After an unsuccesfull attempt to multiplay my new 4-sided Falklands Monster SilentHuneter, Herman and I decided to play the three seided "Shadow the boomer" instead.

I played US, with an i688 boat. My objective was to find and shadow a Delta-class sub leaving Polyarni

I headed East, aiming for a point 45nm north of the Russian base where I hoped the Delta might pass after about 6 hours.
Detected numerous surface contacts, of which I got blade count and Identity, but never a workable bearing or solution. This continued for hours!

Creeping in my hunting area I had contacts with a Trafalgar class doing 3 knots, a Victor doing 15, a Delta doing 8 and an Ula class SSK drifting. They had to be close but no bearings, just huge UZs (see pic)

Then Herman in the Trafalgar killed the Victor and Delta, he was on their tail. He got killed by the bearing-only return fire.
I cruised leasurely to my egress point and was awarded a very frustrating victory.

I thing the sonar model could do with some work; the UZs on targets that had to be close were enormous, frequently larger than the whole map.

The name of the scenario was Shadow the Boomer and that was just what I (almost) did. The sub came out of the Kola Peninsula directly at me so I slowed down to 1 kt and waited for it to pass by before pulling up behind him and into his baffles.

Unfortunately, he decided to pull a Crazy Ivan and turned around to check his back. He discovered me at less than 1nm distance and fired on me. I returned fire and ran. My Spearfish caught him, but his return fire also caught the Trafalgar to tie the score.

AoA and I haven't played in awhile, but we got the chance, today. We selected Freek Scheper's Pebble Island, made with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB.
During the night of May 14th, 1982, SAS commandoes intended to attack the airfield on Pebble Island. The raid was to be carried out via helicopter from HMS Hermes, which had detached from the CVBG during the night to steam towards Pebble Island with a small escort.

While the force was still 6 hours away from their attack, American SIGINT was received which indicated that the Argentine aircraft carrier "de Mayo" had evaded British submarines and entered the 200nm exclusion zone.

A unique carrier battle was now brewing....

AoA took his traditional side as Argentine while I was the British. The map area was small and we both started off under Emissions Control. I sent out helos to learn his position and had them pop up and turn on their radar at a distance from my own ships so that my position was not revealed. I was lucky. On their first sweep, I had strong contacts to the NW. Hopefully, I was yet undetected.

The lives of my helo pilots were short in scenario. As soon as they radiated, AoA had fighters on them. Several were lost in quick succession. I tried to defend them with Harrier interceptors, but he managed to shoot many of them down, too. Even though they were armed with the longer-ranged Sidewinder, he was getting in and killing them with his Magic infrared-seeking missiles. He would dangle one as bait. While a pair of Harriers would take off in pursuit, a second one would sneak in behind them and stab them in the back.

After losing 6 Harriers, I had to relent and pulled the coverage back. AoA then pulled my same trick on me by having a recon Tracker fly all the way around my task force before turning on its radar. Although I was able to kill it soon after, the jig was up. I had been tagged.

With concealment gone, I had my radar picket radiate and the aerial picture cleared up quickly. My remaining Harriers operated much more effectively under ground-controlled intercept missions and they quickly pushed back the Super Etendards and killed several helos. It was a cat and mouse dance of each side trying to blind the other.

Our task forces closed on each other and I held all my Harriers on CAP. As we neared each other's maximum Exocet range, I decided to gamble and fire my SSMs on Bearing-Only Launch. They might all decide to track a small corvette, but I hope that they would be able to find the large carrier.

My SSM launch went off without a hitch. His ships were soon busy fighting off a swarm of Exocet, but not so busy that he didn't fire a few back in my direction. The 6 Harriers I held back to defend the fleet made all the difference. Not a single missile got through. The Argentines were not so lucky as 5 Exocet struck the carrier and left it ablaze.

However, he had managed to launch his Skyhawks before the missiles arrived. As they danced around my fleet, the Harriers kept them at bay while the SAMs decimated them. However, soon I was out of SAMs and Sidewinders. The final Skyhawk bore in with fierce determination in the face of AAA tracers lighting up the twilight sky. He laid his string of bombs across the bow of HMS Hermes and got two hits. To add insult to injury, he unloaded 20mm cannon and landed several hits before streaking home to his burning carrier. Thankfully, it was not enough and I was awarded victory soon afterwards.

Thanks to AoA for a really fun game and to Freek for scenario.

Today, we welcomed Neptoon to the ANW MP community. He's played some H3, but never had the opportunity for MP so we chose Dawn Patrol, made with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB.

Neptoon commanded the Norwegians while I took the Soviet side.

Both sides crept around with their radar off while hoping to catch a glimpse of the other. I got lucky first and nearly ran over a Hugin-class missile boat. A few rounds of 76mm gunfire sent him to the bottom. Unfortunately, he had time to send a contact report to his associates. Soon afterwards, a swarm of SSMs descended from the heavens and obliterated him.

My ESM caught sporadic emissions and I decided to act on a hunch with a few SS-N-9 Sirens. A little 'recon-by-fire'. I got lucky and managed a couple of hits. While I was preparing for a second volley, Neptoon had already acted and fired his SSMs. I managed to sink another, but lost all three of my missile boats and Neptoon was awarded victory.

Great first game, Neptoon. I demand a re-match! Many thanks to AoA for the use of his server.

My first game against a human opponent ended in victory for the forces of right and goodness. While I got my main-body patrol boats single file in front of my flagship, a lone boat in a northern fjord sped into the open with radars blazing. Closing on two unidentified surface contacts for a positive ID, he was suddenly obliterated. Not soon enough. The main body, now formed up and skirting the coast at flank speed with radars on, launched a bearing-only attack with its longest-range missiles, sinking both enemy boats. Immediately, Sirens found my group and took my two lead boats, but not before the frontrunner had launched all its missiles at the third enemy boat that had just appeared off to the northwest. Still the most exciting scenario is Dawn Patrol, the simplest confrontation and the surest test of doctrine.

Today, AoA wanted one final match before celebrating Christmas. We selected North of Iceland , made with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB.

quote:

A British ASW group, operating to the north of Iceland, is being attacked by a Soviet anti-surface group.

This scenario was inspired by the situation described in the Harpoon scenarios for miniatures (version 3) from Game Designers' Workshop.

This scenario has not been publicly released, but is available on AoA’s ANW MP server.

AoA commanded the NATO ASW group while I controlled the Soviet KUG (Anti-surface group). Both groups entered the area north of Iceland stealthily under full EmCon [Emissions Control]. With neither side willing to emit any energy in the electromagnetic spectrum, a long search was expected.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=27143&stc=1&d=1261382714

Surprisingly, AoA took the first aggressive move by turning on the search radar of AEW [Airborne Early Warning] Sea King helo. I also had a Helix ASW helo airborne and detected the British helo. I did not know if I had been counter-detected, but took no chances and had the helo dive to sea level before running back to refuel.

A second helo was launched to try and localize the Sea King. I took an oblique course towards the contact in hopes of not revealing the position of my task group. On a hunch, I ordered the Hormone to maximum altitude and turn on her radar. I was soon rewarded by several surface contacts to the West. Once localized, the helo dove for the deck and safety. Unfortunately, luck was not with her as she was pounced upon and killed by something invisible – a Sea Harrier. Accurate intelligence is a costly product to acquire.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=27138&stc=1&d=1261382664

Assuming that the Sea King had counter-detected my ships, I ordered CG Kerch, my Kara-class cruiser, to radiate her jamming systems and radar while the others kept silent; masked by her activities.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=27139&stc=1&d=1261382678

Not long afterwards, unwanted company appeared. A lone Sea Harrier had crept into range. I thought that AoA wanted to blind me by shooting down my helo so I pulled it back over the task force. Just as the Air Warfare Officer on Kerch released a salvo of SA-N-3b SAMs towards the bandit, radar reported two contacts breaking free from the bandit. Sea Eagle missiles were inbound! The SAMs shot the intruder out of the sky before downing the missiles with a second salvo.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=27140&stc=1&d=1261382690

AoA then tried to blind me by having his Harriers creep in slowly just above the waves. Two fighters got close, but were engaged and shot down by SAMs from the Kerch just before they reached release range for their Sidewinders.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=27141&stc=1&d=1261382698

The KUG finally got within range of the British carrier group. The ECM was so intense on both sides that firm data was hard to get. Finally, a hard contact was confirmed. It was only the frigate Amazon, but one hard target is better than no target. I was hoping that the rest of the British CVHG would reveal it self when they countered the first SSM attack consisting of 8x SS-N-3 Shaddock and a pair of SS-N-22 Sunburn missiles.

The British AAW officer also knew his stuff and shot down all the missiles, but one got within 100 yards before being shot down by SeaCat SAM. The second salvo was a trio of SS-N-22 Sunburn and were followed by a third salvo of three more missiles. The SAM defences expertly shot down most of the missiles and allowed a single strike. It was nearly enough to sink the Arrow, which had 70% damage and flooded to 86% before stabilizing.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=27142&stc=1&d=1261382705

Thinking that I had exhausted my missile batteries, I decided to retire and live to fight another day. While running, the British managed to launch a daring and well-timed helo strike with Sea Skua ASMs. Several volleys of SS-N-3b SAMs were fired, but unsuccessfully intercepted the strikers. Only after the Skuas had been released by the helos did two SAMs bring down their targets. The swarm of Skuas tracked a Krivak-class frigate and many were brought down or spoofed by chaff and flares. Only one hit was registered.

At this time, I realized that CG Grozny had re-loaded her Shaddock missiles from her magazines. I gambled and launched a salvo of missiles on Bearing-Only-Launch by back-tracking the return path of the British Sea Harriers. Luck was not with me today as NATO SAMs easily brought them down.

The game ended in a draw, but AoA should have won due to my totally inept attack(s). By firing my SSMs in salvos instead of one massive attack (and totally forgetting about my extra magazines!), I would have faced a court-martial upon return to base.

Thanks to AoA for a fun match and the use of his server.

Jeppe Bloch (a.k.a. Awac835) was introduced to the MP community. Jeppe's been an H3 player for many years, but has never played head-to-head before today. To welcome him to the community, we selected a scenario with naval units from his home country of Denmark in Matrix Siege, made with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB.

From: CinCLant
To: Capt, USS Stark
Info: Capt, USS Stout
Subj: Allied Training Exercise - Matrix Siege

1. Commence exercise receipt this message. Observe the time limit strictly.

2. Objective: Safe transit of your group past island of Laeso.

3. OpFor Estimated as:

3.1 Up to fifteen small vessels (PT and FFL classs) arrayed to opposed your transit. The majority are assets of Germany and Kingdom of Denmark.

3.2 OpFor is armed with Exocet and and Penguin.

I commanded the USN while Jeppe controlled the European forces.

From the start, I launched my lone SH-60 SeaHawk helicopter for a little aerial surveillance. Once away from the base platform, she turned on her radar and was immediately rewarded by surface detections throughout the Kattegat Strait. However, some of them were trying to jam the radar and thus could only come from warships.

I launched my AH-1 Sea Cobra to prosecute some German missile boats to the north of my task group. It crept in at Very Low altitude. Just as she got into range, I got a message over the radio asking, "Is that your helo?" and I knew that she had been detected. So, I opened fire on the nearest missile boat with all that I had. I only managed to release 3x TOW missiles before she was blotted from the sky. Her weapons did hit the ship and forced it to drop out of formation (and eventually sink).

As my DDG and FFG sailed southward, more ECM emissions were detected. With the SeaHawk maintaining surveillance, I decided to gamble and try to take out one of the Danish corvettes armed with Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles [ESSM]. They were self-defense weapons, but they had a 17nm range. Not much on the open ocean, but plenty to cover the narrow confines of the Kattegat.

I launched 8x Harpoons at her and 4 more at another corvette. Both of the targets might be carrying Harpoons, too. Hopefully, I could kill them before they launched their own weapons. Luck was with me as the salvo obliterated the two small ships.

With my Medium/Long-ranged weapons expended, I was left with my short-ranged SAMs to be used in ASuW mode. Nearing Laeso Island, a Norwegian missile boat was detected. I decided to engage with the less capable Perry frigate and turned on her radar. She detected a Hugin- and a Parchim-class attack boat. Each was destroyed in a salvo of 4x SM-1 Standard missiles.

Another group of missile boats was detected coming around Laeso Island. Evidently, they had been using the island to shield themselves from the radar and were only detected as they came into range. The Perry engaged them, too. Unfortunately, they were already within missile range and managed to launch their own weapons before being destroyed. The salvo was well timed and at least one leaker got through the AEgis destroyer's defences leaving her with 64% damage and only able to make 8 knots.

As she ran for the finish line, the flooding kept going up to 67%, 70%, 74%,... And she was chased from behind by a group of German missile boats; not unlike a pack of wolves. She managed to kill the German attack squadron, but could not make it to Laeso Island before time expired on the exercise; thus leaving the game as a draw.

Thanks to Jeppe for a fun match and to AoA for the use of his server.

Jeppe Bloch (a.k.a. Awac835) came back for another battle, today. We elected to try Advance Guards, made with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB.

After the surprise Argentine invasion of the Falklands Islands, the British Defence ministry urgently ordered available Royal Navy units to the area.A mixed destroyer/frigate squadron with attached support ships had just finished operation Springtrain around Gibraltar.

On April 16th, this group was the first to enter the waters around the Falklands.Argentina, meanwhile, was using her navy to reinforce the garrison in the Malvinas and to establish a blocking force for any early British units.

I commanded the Argentines while Jeppe controlled the British forces. Both sides started cautiously with neither emitting anything on the electromagnetic spectrum. I ordered my two separated task groups to close on one another for, hopefully, additional mutual protection and sent my Alouette helicopters aloft for some passive scouting. They swept back and forth fruitlessly until one of them simply disappeared from the plot. Although she reported nothing before her disappearance, her destruction, nonetheless, was a datum point and the Escort ASuW task group set off on her last point of contact.

As they neared the last reported position, ESM [Electronic Support Measures] reported radar emissions nearby. Frigate FFL Drummond was ordered to activate her radar systems and act as a picket. Soon, two Birmingham-class destroyers were detected along with a third vessel and classified by their transmissions. The ASuW group closed on the them.

Once in range, a volley of four Exocet was fired at the first destroyer. They failed to get a hit. A second and third salvo were just as unsuccessful. I should have launched them in one barrage. My opponent did not fail where I did and returned fire from three ships that quickly overwhelmed DDG Santisima Trinidad. DDG Hercules responded by slamming several Sea Dart missiles into the nearest Birmingham destroyer and left her creeping along at 3kts before a second barrage put her under. However, both sides had Sea Dart missiles and soon Hercules and frigate Granville were sunk.

I detached the two escorts for the Amphibious group to intercept. Frigate Drummond drew attention and fire while destroyer Sequi closed the range. Drummond died, but Segui pummelled the British frigate and second Birmingham destroyer into silence. Once the computer decided that the ship was a "Probable Kill", the game would not allow me to fire on the destroyer any longer so I decided to move on the newly detected British UnRep group. The Segui was damaged to 40% and might still be able to do some damage to the Brits. As she sailed past the "dead" Birmingham, it suddenly lit up with additional gun flashes to sink the Segui. With both sides severely mauled, the support vessels retired. Neither side was able to accomplish its Victory Conditions.

Thanks to Jeppe for another fun match and to AoA for the use of his server.

Jeronimo Chiecchio (a.k.a. AoA) was into the Olympic spirit of competition and wanted a match. We selected Hidden Soldiers, made with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB.
The theme is a historical fictional World War III set about 1990. The forces of the post-Soviet post-capitalist states, which formerly made up the Soviet Union, in conjunction with SE Asian allies, are attempting to influence the world by force.

The Soviets have successfully captured ports along the coast of Norway and neutralized Iceland. Now, they are attempting to reinforce their new possessions in order to weather the inevitable NATO storm. NATO is trying to make their efforts a little less successful.
AoA played as the USSR while I commanded the NATO forces. Things started off badly for me and kept getting worse as the game progressed. USS Boston was in the Denmark Strait and encountered a surface group centred around BCGN Kalinin. She tried desperately to evade contact, but was localized and sunk.

SSNs Norfolk and Atlanta were lurking around Jan Mayen Island and decided to take a chance with a TLAM attack to knock out the island's ammo dump. Since the base could not be destroyed outright, this would be the best way to (hopefully) reduce the number of available sorties from the Maritime Patrol Aircraft and helos thought to be on the island. A similar strike was planned against Severomorsk and Andoya. Results were positive as only Andoya's ammunition dump survived.

SSN Atlanta was pounced upon by an MPA shortly afterwards. I don't know how he found her, but he might have had a submarine or plane nearby and back-tracked the TLAM in hopes of finding something interesting. She had to work very hard to escape the Flaming Datum and disappear into the open ocean. Nothing disconcerts a submariner more than a line of active sonobuoys appearing out of nowhere.

SSN Conqueror detected an inbound re-supply convoy and moved in to attack. After localizing and identifying the escorts, she tried to roll back the defences by attacking the escorts first. Four Harpoons were assigned to each of two Krivak-class frigates. One was severely damaged and making a few knots speed but the other one seemed to survive. The plucky frigates got their revenge as they detected the SSN moving in to close the range for her Mk24 Tigerfish torpedoes. She was counter-detected at a range of 15nm and had to fire her torpedoes on Bearing-Only-Launch mode before trying to escape. She died from a hail of torpedoes and her torpedoes ran out of fuel in futile pursuit.

Cued by the contact report from the Conqueror, SSNs Grayling and Buffalo moved to intercept the same convoy. Unfortunately, they ran afoul of Soviet ASW patrols. One died quickly from an aerially delivered torpedo while SSN Buffalo ran into a lurking submarine. At close range, both submarines exchanged torpedo fire. The pair of Mk48s failed to hit the Soviet boat while the Buffalo died from the return fire. Things were sucking from the NATO perspective with 4 boats sunk for one corvette in return.

Atlanta and Norfolk moved to intercept an UnRep group near Jan Mayen. Both subs lofted long-ranged TASM and Harpoons in an attempt to whittle down the escorts with no success. After extended evasive manoeuvres, Norfolk moved in to try with her torpedoes. She was detected at 12nm range and had to attack on Bearing-only-launch mode after taking damage from a near hit. She managed to launch her torpedoes before a second torpedo sank her. No hits were registered.

With only one boat remaining, I had to play it very cautiously. I did not believe that I could accomplish my victory conditions as that single boat lacked the firepower to sink 14 ships. She crept all around the UnRep group looking for an opening. The UnRep group had met up with the Kuznetsov battle group thereby doubling the lethality of the patrols.

The plucky submarine did not give up nor did she give away her greatest weapon, stealth. She kept looking for an opening and found one after skulking for 30 hours. She was following the group and patiently waiting/hoping for it to turn back in her direction. Her patience was rewarded as the group reversed direction and she was already in behind the outer screen.

She increased speed and moved in from the starboard flank at 8kts to the oblivious Soviets and crept in behind the inner screen of Krivak frigates. Only when she was able to lock onto the CV Kuznetsov did she reveal herself with a salvo of 4x Mk48 AdCap torpedoes.

Once her presence was known, she increased speed to close with the targets and continued firing torpedoes as fast as her crew could re-load them. The Soviets returned fire and she decoyed two inbound weapons while she fired off all her remaining weapons. As she attempted to withdraw from the scene, a final weapon caught her and sank her on egress. Her weapons were lethal and claimed Kuznetsov, AOs Dubna and Uda, and AE Venta. In his panic to prosecute the submarine, AoA accidentally launched an SS-N-12 Sunburn missile into his own Krivak frigate!

With the demise of my last unit, the game ended. I was unable to accomplish my victory conditions, but was also unable to prevent AoA from accomplishing his.

Thanks to AoA for a great match and the use of his server.

Jeronimo Chiecchio (a.k.a. AoA) and I met up for another epic battle. We selected Gatekeeper, made with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB.

The GIUK gap is one of the most important pieces of naval real estate in the world. These straits connect the Norwegian Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Because NATO owns it, Soviet forces will have to run through a barrier of ASW defenses before they can reach their targets in the Atlantic. At the beginning of the war, the Soviets are surging large numbers of submarines through the GIUK gap. It is vital to the Soviet that they get through to attack NATO convoys and naval forces operating in the Atlantic. It is easier for NATO to find and destroy these subs before they reach the open ocean. If NATO can erect a barrier of units here, they can catch some of the Soviet subs trying to get into the Atlantic to attack the units operating there. NATO will use submarines, maritime patrol aircraft, and surface ships to destroy these subs. Some Soviet subs, possibly damaged or with their torpedoes and missiles expended, will be moving north. These units are valuable to the Soviets, but not as valuable as the combat-ready subs moving south.

AoA switched roles from last time and played as NATO while I commanded the Red Banner Fleet forces. I had a whole lotta old Foxtrot diesel subs, a few Victor I-class boats, and a sprinkling of modern vessels like Sierra and Akula. My orders were to debouch into the deep Atlantic basin.

I wanted to try and creep into the N. Atlantic, but the time limit would not allow for that so I had to increase speed of most vessels to 10kts. The Foxtrots with their extremely limited underwater range had to snort every few hours. This easily turned them into targets. As soon as they tried to re-charge their batteries in the Denmark Strait, they were set upon by swarms of Orion Maritime Patrol Aircraft [MPA] and Sea King helicopters. In quick succession, 3 Foxtrots met their demise followed by a Victor I and then an Echo II missile boat. To say that things sucked would be an understatement. The Denmark Strait turned in to a veritable graveyard for Red Banner boats with only two Foxtrot diesel subs squeaking through to the Atlantic.

The Faeroes Gap would start better, but also end with the same result. I thought that I had found a relatively weakly defended point to pass into the Atlantic. So, I sent a number Victors, Akula, and Echo boats through. Once through, I let down my guard and immediately lost boats when they stumbled across a British Oberon-class diesel boat. We exchanged fire and I killed the boat, but it also revealed my presence. Luckily, there appeared to be no MPA nearby to pounce upon my subs.

A second group of submarines were passing near Vagar and quickly came to a halt as the leading Victor II attack submarine detected CV Ark Royal in its path. Since it was only 10nm away, I assumed that it had been detected and thus decided to try and destroy this formidable ASW platform. I had already lost too many submarines making it impossible for me to fulfill my orders. Following a few miles behind the Victor was an Oscar SSGN. Both submarines opened fire with a full salvo hoping to knock out the carrier. The British SAM defence was superb and not a single Shipwreck missile hit. The Type-65 torpedoes fired by the Victor chased, but fell short.

The British response was swift and deadly. The Victor ran for her life, but was caught and killed shortly thereafter. Luckily, the Oscar was more distant and had more time for evasion. She was attacked by three torpedoes, but managed to elude them all.

The rest of my boats managed to sneak into the Atlantic, but I had lost too many and could not achieve my Victory conditions. AoA also failed to destroy sufficient targets to achieve his and the game ended in a draw.

Thanks to AoA for a very enjoyable game and for the use of his server.

Jeppe Bloch (a.k.a. AWAC835) and I met up for another meeting engagement. We selected Pebble Island, made with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB.
During the night of May 14th, 1982, SAS commandoes intended to attack the airfield on Pebble Island. The raid was to be carried out via helicopter from HMS Hermes, which had detached from the CVBG during the night to steam towards Pebble Island with a small escort.

While the force was still 6 hours away from their attack, American SIGINT was received which indicated that the Argentinean aircraft carrier Veinticinco de Mayo had evaded British submarines and entered the 200nm exclusion zone.

A unique carrier battle was now brewing....
Jeppe chose the British side and left me in command of the Argentines.

This battle starts out like most engagements do; as a battle of reconnaissance. I launched my recon assets as soon as possible and had them widely spaced around the map. I maintained EmCon and only used visual sensors and ESM to remain hidden. Jeppe launched two Harriers to act as top cover. Luck would favour me first as a Sea King helo managed to get a visual contact on a ship without being counter-detected. Immediately pulled back so as not to allow the enemy to know that his general position had been detected.

Not long afterwards, he managed to locate and destroy one of my S-2 Tracker planes and then a Sea King helo. However, I also had some tricks up my sleeve in the form of 2 Super Etendard fighter-bombers armed with Magic 2 missiles. As his concentration was focused on killing the defenceless recon planes, the Super Etendards bore in just above the waves. They exchanged missiles and both Harriers fell for the lost of a Super Etendard.

Both sides remained relatively quiet as we prepared our strike assets. Just before they were ready for launch, I ordered the reconnaissance platforms already airborne to close on the estimated enemy position and to energize their radar. For strike purposes, general information was insufficient. For the cost of another helo and Tracker, his carrier group was pin-pointed. The strike group launched and planned a long circuitous route to the target. Hopefully, this would allow them to strike from an unexpected axis and thus evade more of the fighters.

Jeppe had also launched his own strike platforms even though he had no knowledge of my carrier's position. Instead, he concentrated on blasting the Pebble Island airfield. Tough luck for them, but better them than me on my carrier.

The strike group of A-4 Skyhawks curved around the British group and made their ingress on the deck from the northeast. Things seemed to be going well as they did not appear to have been detected. (Only afterwards did Jeppe tell me that he had watched the strike planes for most of their entire flight due to my mis-calculation of the radar horizon!)

Six Skyhawks were armed with bombs while two more flew as escorts. This measly group did not expect to survive, but would do their best. They closed and were not engaged. Jeppe realized the threat too late. The planes had flown in close formation to appear as a single blip and thus Jeppe had not evaluated them as a major threat. Only when they dispersed on their final approach did he recognize them for the danger they were. It was too late.

Two Harriers scrambled and were able to shoot down a bomber before dying from return missile fire. The entire strike group unloaded their bomb racks and riddled the carrier with gunfire before desperately running for their lives. Three more Skyhawks would fall to gunfire and SAMs before the rest safely returned to the carrier. They had done a magnificent job damaging the British carrier by 24% which was quite sufficient for victory.

Thanks to Awac835 for a nice game and to AoA for the use of his server.

Great attack! I read that in real life Veinticento de Mayo had an 8-plane A4 strike on the deck and had detected the British Carriers yet could not launch due to too little wind over the deck. Don't discount old carriers and planes (especially old Dutch carriers). Freek

Jeronimo Chiecchio (a.k.a. AoA) and I decided to try another Cold War battle. We selected Fortress Keflavik, made with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB.
Iceland is a vital base for NATO anti-submarine and air defense operations. Soviet bombers operating in the Norwegian Sea or trying to reach the Atlantic can be attacked by patrol planes based at Keflavik. It is critical to the Soviets to stop these operations against them by the NATO forces based in Iceland. They will do this either by using bomber raids to reduce the effectiveness of these forces or attempting to take control of the island. Since Iceland has no armed forces of its own, and strictly limits the armed forces of the NATO countries that occupy Keflavik, an assault by Soviet forces is probable.

AoA commanded the NATO forces in defense of Iceland and the GIUK gap. I was in charge of the Red Banner Fleet units assigned to make an amphibious assault in order to neutralize Keflavik. My amphibious group was centred on the CVHG Minsk. I ordered it to radar silence and only allowed a single Udaloy destroyer to radiate its radar as a picket as the group approached Iceland. The longer I kept AoA in the dark as to the composition of the landing force, the better chance I had of survival since he could not pick out the high value targets for destruction. I also needed to silence Stornoway as it acted as a gatekeeper for access to Iceland by my bomber regiments. Two full regiments of Tu-95 Bears and Tu-22 Backfires were assigned this task and launched immediately.

Sure enough, AoA detected the jamming and radar emissions from the destroyer and moved in to investigate. He had positioned a number of F-15 Eagle fighters in Barrier Combat Air Patrol [BarCAP] positions between my ships and a Sentry. I assigned two pairs of long-ranged Flanker fighters as CAP for the ships.

AoA was cautious on his approach, but I kept a poker face and did not reveal my ships' identities by activating their radar systems. Once his fighters were close enough, they opened fire on an orbiting helicopter I had assigned for early warning. The CG Slava unmasked her batteries and radiated her radar systems. The helo died to Sparrow missiles, but return fire from the SA-N-6 rotary launchers caught all six of the Eagles as they vainly tried to flee the scene of their crime.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/asset.php?fid=28863&uid=1836&d=1268476135

A golden opportunity presented itself to me. With the three BarCAP pairs down, there was virtually nothing standing between my Flankers and the circling E-3 Sentry. I seized upon the moment and ordered the fighters to intercept. The chance of bagging an AWACs was too good to pass up. Both Flanker flights went to afterburner and set off in pursuit of the big bird. Two Eagles tried to interfere, but both died after exchanging missile fire. The cost was three Flankers, but the survivor managed to close with the Sentry as it desperately tried to dive and lose itself in the surface clutter. At a range of ten miles, an AA-11 Archer was fired that turned the plane into a fireball. The surviving Flanker was shot down as it tried to return to its Norwegian base. For the price of four Flankers, nine Eagles had been destroyed along with a precious Sentry.

The Backfires arrived at their Stornoway target long before the lumbering Bears and released their ordnance. Eighty-one AS-4 Kitchen missiles streaked into Stornoway base and flattened it. Stornoway would be out of action for the remainder of the scenario. At this point, we decided to save the game for completion another night.

Thanks to AoA for a fun session and for the use of his server.

Ryan Anderson (a.k.a. Wolff) has been aching to play some MP for awhile. Now that the Olympics are over, we finally got our chance. We selected Watch that First Step, made with the community's favourite database, the PlayersDB.

LOCATION : NW PACIFIC, COASTAL SEATTLE
DATE/TIME: 12 FEBRUARY 1985, 06:00:00 ZULU

With the first war shots, DEFCON ONE status was automatic. Every submarine in the inventory that was capable of getting underway left port for the greater safety of the open sea. Only those boats with mechanical deficiencies remained docked, to leave when their problems were fixed. As a part of standing plans, all the assets of the United States Coast Guard were folded into the Navy's TOE, to be employed in such a way as to free regular Navy assets for higher priority missions. Their mission: sanitize the area around the sub bases, allowing the remaining subs to get to open water.

Ryan is a resident of Oregon so he selected this scenario and chose the USN side. I commanded the 32nd Sub Brigade given the task of finding and killing his boomers. We both started off at creep speed to gauge the situation. Not long afterwards, I had long-range sonar contact with several surface ships; a pair of Coast Guard cutters and a Canadian destroyer, Algonquin.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/asset.php?fid=28875&uid=1836&d=1268525452

My Alfa-class boat was the first to make an attack on a cutter. Thinking that she would be an easy target, I let loose with a full salvo of SET-65 torpedoes only to watch in horror as they missed! The cutter returned fire with a Mk46 torpedo that did not mix. A helluva way to start a war.

My Sierra II had better luck as she crept up on the Canuck destroyer. A salvo of Type 65-76 torpedoes caught and sank the Algonquin after a 30 mile chase.

I really had no idea where the ultra-quiet Ohio subs were, so I just staked out a few patrol zones and prayed like hell that they would stumble across one of them. As I was criss-crossing my four patrol zones, one of the Victor III-class subs was attacked from the air with Mk 46 torps. She died quickly, but was able to release her rescue buoy before her pressure hull imploded. Thus, I had a reference point for her death. I gambled that Wolff was not randomly searching the ocean for my subs and that he must have his own SSBNs nearby and that he was trying to clear a path for them. Therefore, I ordered my surviving attack submarines to converge on the last known position of the Victor III.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/asset.php?fid=28876&uid=1836&d=1268525460

As my Sierra II closed in, she was attacked by torpedoes with 65 knot speed. I (mistakenly) thought that these were Mk 48 AdCAP torpedoes from the SSBN so I counter-fired torpedoes down the incoming bearing and ordered the sub to go active with its sonar. Unfortunately, they were aerially delivered Mk 50 Barracuda. The Sierra dodged several torpedoes and expended over 10 decoys but her luck eventually ran out. She was hit with one torpedo and survived. However, a second one caught her low on decoys and torpedoes. She never knew that her torpedoes actually forced the SSBN to manoeuvre at high speed to avoid them and no other submarine was close enough to hear the Ohio at flank speed. The situation was really sucking for me.

http://forums.gamesquad.com/asset.php?fid=28877&uid=1836&d=1268525470

I only had two surviving subs but I was convinced that the SSBN(s) were nearby. I could just smell Yankee sailor in the air. My Akula and Victor III kept trawling back and forth waiting for a break. Luck is only perseverance meeting opportunity and my "luck" did change. The Victor III suddenly reported inbound torps! They were quickly classified as Mk 48s so I ordered the sub to go active in hopes of killing her attacker before she died. She quickly found a sub contact and counter-fired a pair of SET-65 torpedoes before running in the opposite direction at flank speed. The Mk 48s found their target, but so did the SET-65s.

With the loss of the Ohio, Ryan could not win. However, with the near annihilation of my command, neither could I. The surviving Akula left the area to report that one SSBN had been sunk and the game ended in a draw.

Thanks to Wolff for a really great session and thanks to AoA for the use of his server. Wolff may say that he's a noob, but he's a noob in sheep's clothing.
