Well in AE is the first time I tried Japan (about time) as I personally think allies have it easy.

Some initial thoughts (I know Scott is listening but nothing critical)

This is minor stuff but make sure you do it.

ACM's yes those ships that keep your minefields from depleting.
Convert enougth of those 170k transports (forget the name) to them mines are precious, plus converting to PB's as many have suggested
is not enough range except for close ports.

Make sure to ship supplies to china early! It will run out.

Move BF to northern islands to scout for encroaching allies.

Move extra supplies to Singapore area for futher advances (if not, then followup's will be slower)

Press the allies, They are weak, and if you lay back you play into thier hands!.

Build the airforce, I currently am playing Scen 2, thus 1 will be harder to do. But expand your airforce in Zero's, Sallies.
If he does not battle you then normal builds in Kates and Vals (40 to 60 month) should be enough for when the big battle comes.
Zero's and Sallies are a must expand quickly!!!!!!

These are just a few lessons I have learned. there are more but Scott is listening

Opps forgot I have run my economy to hot and it takes a 35k plunge in HI every month (I believe from pilot training)
regardless it has drained my pool, to where I need to shut down some stuff. It appears Navy the navy cosumes a lot of HI so you
samurai's that like expanding naval be aware that it may be difficult until Yamamoto and Musahis are built. I rushed a couple of ships!
(Yes scott CV's) but had to stop as I figured HI overall was more importent.

The other feeling I have had is elation and overpowering awe at the Japanese domination, I realize always playing allied before I had to wait
many turns and hope the Japanese player would hang in there till I had economic domination to have the same feeling. But it is good
early for the Japanes to have the invincibility (smoke screen) vs always running and hiding. I am already preparing back areas for where I know in Witp I came thru, but I am enjoying the Japanese very much! That is untill I get my tail kicke wich is enevitalbe!
