I've read through the manual and fooled around some, but I would like to know how others went through the learning curve.

Status: offline 		I did as you did, played detailed battles etc to learn the base mechanics, then took the plunge into pbem.

The best way to learn!

Status: offline 		Although PBEM is certainly more challenging, it would be a mistake to learn the mechanics of the game in that mode. The simple reason is that it will take 10 to a hundred times longer.

Just jump on your chosen thrown and battle away. For the first game or two you can skip the advance economy as that is sort of a game within the game. When you are comfortable with all the other basic rules, fire up the advanced economy-its another whole dimension.
