Here's the scenario. I have been building up on Lunga for invasions in the Munda/Shortland area. (I'm USA). I moved some coastal AA up there and noticed their support at Lunga was 0. No problem I figured, move some HQ up there to provide support. So that's what I've been doing. But no support after moving almost every HO from Noumea I could find up to Lunga. I mean I have the a lot at that base. Too much really, and almost every unit is below optimal support levels, but the AA has no support at all. I have the following HQ at the base; SOPAC, 13th Air Force, 3rd Fleet, III Amphib. Cprps, 2nd Marine Div, 37th Div, 43rd Div. I have basically moved my entire SOPAC organizational HQ to LUNGA! Suplies are 69,609 of 24,531 needed. Support for the base is 1828 of 1633 needed. Troops are 9800 Inf and 54000 2nd line, plus assorted vehicles etc... Do I just have too much there for the AA to be supported at all? Is it just a bad idea to move AA from base to base? Will the support slowly "spread" to the arty after a period of time? Is there some particular variety of support these gunners need? What am I doing wrong?

Hi,

It's the overall support that counts. Most combat units are deficient as far as internal support is concerned. The HQ's don't transfer support to the unit they provide support by being in the same hex with them. 1828/1633 means you have more than you need.

So if I have so many HQs in the same hex with these AA units, and I have more support than I need in the hex, why don't the AA units show any support at all?

I think the answer is no matter what else is in the hex, the individual unit screens only show the support provided by it's own support troops, in the case of the AA units, it's 0. But as far as the program actually checking for support, it doesn't care unit-by-unit, but only the hex as a whole.

What is shown on the unit screen is INHERENT support.

The HQs, etc, provide extra support to the ground unit "Task Force" in the hex.

Those who have INHERENT excess keep enough for themselves and the extra is shared with everybody in the hex group.

Same thing with aviation support, except air units have NO inherent support, and Base Forces share ALL of their aviation support, reserving none for themselves (which they don't need, they, as ground units, depend on regular support)

So you are telling me that I should not care that the AA battery units show support as 0 as long as the base has sufficient support?

Yeah, that is basically right.

...but, avoid confusing base support with ground unit support.

Base support is provided by base forces and is more correctly called aviation support.

Support Points would be more correctly called ground unit support.

So, if you have a stack of CD Units with 0 support points inherent, but in the collection the number of support points is in "the green", then the CD unit has sufficient support.

BTW, it took me awhile to get this straight myself.
