from the website. http://www.dirjournal.com/info/abandoned-places-in-the-world/

Gunkanjima, Japan
Hashima Island, commonly called Gunkanjima (meaning “Battleship Island”) is one among 505 uninhabited islands in the Nagasaki Prefecture about 15 kilometers from Nagasaki itself. The island was populated from 1887 to 1974 as a coal mining facility.

Mitsubishi bought the island in 1890 and began the project, the aim of which was retrieving coal from the bottom of the sea. They built Japan’s first large concrete building, a block of apartments in 1916 to accommodate their burgeoning ranks of workers (many of whom were forcibly recruited labourers from other parts of Asia), and to protect against typhoon destruction.

As petroleum replaced coal in Japan in the 1960s, coal mines began shutting down all over the country, and Hashima’s mines were no exception. Mitsubishi officially announced the closing of the mine in 1974, and today it is empty and bare, which is why it’s called the Ghost Island. Travel to Hashima was re-opened on April 22, 2009 after more than 20 years of closure.

Yamato was the largest Battleship, you talking about a different point of view here. Yamato was mobile and that what you talking about is not.

Hi Kyle,

Loved it!  The picture is great.  Put a couple of masts on it, and the illusion would be complete.

Sort of reminds me of Fort Drum.

Not very asthetically pleasing though! I think I would have lowered the superstructure a bit.

Good thing it's far away, otherwise there'd be a whole new set of places for you to get stuck in...

History Channel had a camera crew run through it at one point in their 'Life After People' series. That place is crumbling, far too dangerous to allow the general public to mill about.

Recent HD air recon film by Japanese newsmedia asahi shimbun (youtube)

Another recon(youtube)

Japanese famous Gunkanjima photo site (English guide available)

Gunkanjima at "slow ahead" circa 1930 (Before post-war refit)

In June 11, 1945, USS Tirante(SS-420) attacked at harbor of Gunkanjima, and one cargoship was sunken. But in Japan, this fact was growing a rumour that "Gunkanjima was mistaken for IJN battleship, US submarine attacked it." Even nowadays, some people believes this rumour.
