After installing patch 2 this morning I was having a little look at the new featues. Was somewhat surprised by the search arcs. great feature, but when i saw where the planes were searching i got a bit of a shock. Planes start at the "from" angle and go around clockwise at fixed intervals and do not seem to cover the whole of the arc i specified if not enough planes to do this. Kind of not my perception of how this would work as I oftern use this feature to stop planes searhing across land masses and had not realised that is can in fact really limit where the planes will search. What i was expecting was that if i specified an arc the planes would try to cover this the best they could.

Also if i do not specify any arc how do the search planes behave?

And finally when I looked at an ASW patrol it was only going out to half it's range. Is this expected?

Squamry,

Search threads in the past 6-7 days, this has been answered in great detail many times already.

In short each plane searches 10 degrees of the 360 degrees circle, always starting from the start point (left click on the map when setting arcs). They search twice a day, in AM and PM. 4 planes on search will cover 80 degrees per day (4x 10 in AM phase and additional 4x10 in PM phase). When the next day comes they will reset and start over, so if your desired search arc is greater than planes can search you will always search one same, limited area. You need to reduce arc or bring more search planes.

If nothing specified they search random arcs.

ASW range was already halved in WitP and is wad.

Nevertheless I'd like to make a suggestion here for the devs. First it would be nice if a set area cannot be covered completely that within this area random directions would be chosen rather than simply going clockwise and consistently miss certain spots.
Secondly I find it strange that the AM and PM searches are en bloc. Wouldn't it make more sense - statistically - for example to search odd diretions in the morning and even directions in the afternoon?

Apparently the 10 degree increments has been in AE since it came out.  If you read the manual closely this is not a change.  Of course I never realized that was the way that the search settings worked until the beta patch came out with the search arc display, so this is a major improvement in my book.

So if I understand correctly , you would require , if set at 100% search , 36 patrol planes to search 360 degrees? Realistically to provide spares and proper maintainannce , 48?

Yep, and 48 pilots too, they can't fly every day...

Well, you could use 18 planes and 36 pilots; they'd fly half the circle in the morning and half in the afternoon.

I do like seeing the search arcs on the screen, though, even though I can't get all of the search arcs from different squadrons to show up at big bases like Pearl.  It appears that the only arcs it shows are the ones at the front of the list on the display screen, and as soon as there's a non-searching squadron in the list it no longer displays any after that.  Is there a way to move the search squadrons to the front of that list so they all display?

For example, if I have two search squadrons and a fighter squadron at Brisbane, if the first two on the display list are the search squadrons then their arcs show up on the map.  If the fighter squadron is 2nd on the list, then only the first one shows up.  If the fighter squadron is #1, then none of them show up.

Try and use the 'z' key, it'll show all search arcs

Strange...after the official patch 2, I cannot get the arcs to show at all. I've tried using "Z", is there something I'm missing? I assign an arc for a group to Naval Search in and I see no arcs being represented on the map.

It has, at least, helped me understand why some of my search planes have not bee overly effective. i should not be surprised by this as it is fundmentally the same mechanism for the old "carrier strike".

Read your new addendums in your manual folder.

That is exactly what I thought. its still the same way since decades ago.

it is just funny to watch this pile of questions coming still up again and again.

Read your new addendums in your manual folder.

The interface is nothing like displayed in the addendums file, it's in the original style of air group mission selection.

Iridium, what scenario are you showing in screenie? My screen seems different for same version. New search buttons and shows arcs buttons.

You might need to uninstall and reinstall. You are missing new industry button on top bar also.

Yeah, I was kinda coming to that conclusion on my own...oh well. Thanks for the confirmation. Just for the sake of it; the screen is from Scenario #2 but I then started new games in #1 and a few others to see if there was any difference...there was not.

Guess I'm reinstalling soonish.

Ill be honest.  I dislike the search routine in AE a great deal.  Probably because I don't truly understand it.  But it adds a level of micromanaging to the game that already struggled with having too much micromanaging.   I have read the threads, and no doubt will read them again...but can someone please point me to the thread that has the best explanation of how these are suppose to work?  With the new Arcs in the patch, I discovered to my horror that all the search arcs in all of my games were backwards :-) which explained a great deal...but given that I understood it to be left click counter clockwise right click and did that.  I now am sure I have zero idea what I'm doing.

thanks

Well, this gives you an excuse for AE, but it doesn't cover your losses in WITP...
I found with the beta patch that I had some squadrons performing ASW over hte Mojave desert!

Anyway, the search arcs form up in a clockwise direction from the starting, and the new setup makes it very easy to double check that you have it right. I really, really like it.

Did I say that I really, really, really like it? Okay...

I really really like the graphic detail of it, but am probably just lazy and prefered the old way. I will continue to learn the hard way no doubt as my opponents sneak past my search planes to punch me in the nose.

When in doubt I just make sure that I have the Base set to " Show All Search Arcs " that way I can be most precise in setting the area covered.

Unless my search squadrons are the first units listed on the base display, though, I never see all the search arcs generated at a particular base. Is there a way to move the seach squadrons to the front of the list?

I find that the simplest method is to exit the base screen and then hit the "z" key. This shows all the search arcs on the map, not just the ones at the base in question - so it gives you a much better idea of whether you've left any holes in your coverage.

This, of course, is not to imply that your search planes won't fly directly over the KB without seeing it...

I bet you something cold to drink that historically they didn't do 360 searches much, just in the direction of a percieved threat.

It's a bit of a bugger up. You can hae completely random arcs, but as soo n as  you specify simething you are limitd to 10 degree arcs. I am quite happy to accept random arcs between two paramters that I set. What I really want to e able to do is prevent my search planes looking at areas where they have no chance of finding something,
