Anyone else notice that thier Porter class DDs have a 320 anti-air rating? This the december 8th GC scenario so there is no upgrades yet. Tried to screen shot it but have no idea where screenies are stored.

Anyways is it suppose to be that high or is something amiss. Anyone else see this happening?

Looks right to me. Wikipedia says the original 8 5in/38 Mk 12 sp EBR guns made them top Heavy. Later versions had some of the 5in guns removed and replaced with quad and single 40mm mounts. You think the 41 class is scary, in 1945 you get the "Porter AA 4/45" class, check out the 20mm, 40mm and 5in DP guns on that thing.

Just looked at the wiki for the Porters too. Everything matches.

From playing WITP and CHS the Porter was alot lower in AAA ratings. Figured it was the same in AE too. So to my amazement after patching and starting a new game my jaw dropped at AAA 320 rating. Figured something was screwd up from my patch process.

I use to use them as raiders because of the number of main batteries they had. But heck if thier AAA rating is so high im gonna use them as a escort for my carrier groups.

Just cant get my head around that AAA rating when all the other destoyers are half of that.

It's the 8 x 5"/38 causing it. That is lot of AA firepower right there compared to other DD classes. Note that AA & ASW value number is just approximation of number of tubes & effect. As far as I know, it does not have direct relevance to "in-game" calculations per se, which are weapon by weapon anyway apparently, but more as a helpful guide.

I think this is a mistake.  The "sp" in "5in/38 Mk 12 sp EBR guns" probably means single purpose, because the Porter class DDs (and Somers class) used a single purpose mount to save weight, and therefore couldn't elevate their guns past 35 degree.  Navweaps.com says they did carry some AA common rounds for use against torpedo planes, but I think they had single purpose directors only, so they wouldn't have been effective in the AA role.  Later in the war they were rearmed with 5in DP mounts.

Similarly, the Japanese 12.7cm/50 3YT is given a DP capability nearly as effective as the USN DP 5/38 (accuracy 59 and effect 51 vs. 62 and 55 respectively for the US gun), but according to Navweaps.com it was a very ineffective AA weapon primarily due to slow rates of fire and the need to return an elevation of 10-15 degrees for loading.  The US gun could be reloaded at any elevation due to power ramming.
