Maybe I've missed it. But is there some way for infantry to sneak/crawl through woods, jungle or other terrain? Even moving just one hex per turn sometimes doesn't seem to help.

Moving one hex per turn is sneaking. Try moving 2 hexes instead and see how quickly your infantry die.

Hmmm. I'm playing a jungle scenario. Even moving one hex my infantry is dying quickly against entrenched machine guns. When you consider the terrain and the sneaking, and sometimes smoke, it seems like my infantry dies way too quickly.

What range (in Jungle it's probably very close)? and what troop quality (poor quality sneakers make a lot of noise, hi quality defenders can hear very well)?

Moving infantry die very easily advancing against entrenched MGs at the best of times

Well, you could turn Infantry Toughness up in the Preferences to suit your idea of "reality".

Hope this helps.

Set your fire Range to '0' before you move. This doesn't always work with squads, but snipers and AT teams often succeed in 'sneaking' this way. :)

Yes if you buy Rebock or Nike sneakers for your infantry they will do very well. :)

And thoughs defenders that say hi to you before they shot you are really good. :)

Just a suggestion. Buy lots and lots of small infantry recon. 2 man units. Make sure when you but them that they get the +10 in experience. Then move them forward infront of you troops and units. They are size class zero and they have a better chance to see bad guys. Also they ussually only cost about 9 points each.

I'm getting my infantry wiped out 3-4 hexes away by the machine guns. I would think that infantry crawling in jungle terrain 100-150 yards away wouldn't be so vulnerable. But thanks to everybody for the info. The pref idea in particular sounds good. I should've thought of that myself. Oh well.

Don't change your men, change your tactics. Messing with preferences is fine, but you might not get a concensus with your next PBEM opponent.

As mentioned earlier - LOTS of recon. Reponse Fire Ranges set to '0'. (and reset to '0'. It will get changed if the unit has been fired upon). And cautious movement from cover terrain to cover terrain.

Avoid moving in the open, and try not to move in view of a good order unit. Suppress those units first with artillery or flanking fire from nearby ground troops, then move.

Try setting Spotting to about 60% and move slowly. Also,
set hitting to about 80%. That will change things a lot.

This is a good way to put some stealth into the game. Exact settings will depend upon individual taste.

I was stationed in the South Pacific, so am VERY familiar with Jungle!! When a unit sets up in the defense in a jungle, or anywhere where there is brush, fire lanes are cleared, I don't mean like with a weed-whacker, but an inconspicuous lane, none-the-less. So you have to figure it's not thick jungle you're creeping through, but against those cleared lanes instead, that should help to rationalize the effects anyhow!!?:D
