Status: offline 		Felt the need for one more round, so I guess we're Back in Business Again!

Me vs AndyMac, Scen 2 - one day turns.
For those of you who followed my previous WitP AAR you may remember that AndyMac took over the Allied side in the first half of 1943 and fought it into a 1946 draw.

This time Andy will be in from the start - so we'll try to hit him so hard that we don't have to go into 1946 to settle things again

Andy will have his separate thread so you can drop in for a look from the other side of the fence if you'd like.

We've not created a mile long list of house rules but go with the gentleman agreement from last round and vouch for a fair fight.

We're already into turn 7 and got some catching up to do.
Will come back with a week 1 summary as I find time.

Nagumo went to Pearl again and stayed for 2 days this time, stay tuned for what Tokyo Rose has to say about his stay!

I will only give detaild descriptions of the major actions and sum up the rest.
The big strategy is something I'm working on, but will get back to this later.
First we need to settle things in Malaya, DEI and in the Philippines.

Decided to send Nagumo to a position 3 hexes west of PH for the initial attack.
- Results were pretty historical. The Arizona blew up and most other battleships were damaged.
All the midgets foundered and sank...

Not happy with the low kill count for enemy ac, in AE it's much more difficult to destroy planes on the ground (maybe a tad to difficult?)

Almost every single battleship sent to the bottom (7 out of 8!)
FLAK caused quite a few losses, but we managed to hit the enemy airfields and fighters so hard that they didn't shoot down many KB bombers.

Not much action for the KB in the week after PH - it met with the refuelling TF and headed towards Wake Island to oversee the invasion there. (I postponed it to avoid Andy from hammering the invasion fleet with his carriers).

On the 13th of December a small enemy craft was spotted and sunk by KB ac near Wake Island, so Andy should know its position:

Usual landings in Aparro and Vigan and then Legaspi.
Still building up forces trying to advance into central Luzon while fighting enemy subs and the occasional P-40 / B-17 raids.

The heavy air attacks on Luzon airfields failed do destroy a significant number of enemy ac.
Have gone over to sweeping instead, this is slowly wearing down the enemy fighters.

Air strikes from naval and carrier bombers combined with surface TF attacks has caused major enemy shipping losses in the Philippine Sea. No major Japanese warship has been sunk or damaged.




An interesting note: The heavy cruiser Houston has been attacked in Manila harbour several times but avoided destruction. For some obscure reason Andy sent a Dutch TF with the cruisers Java and De Ruyter to Luzon.

Java was sunk by naval bombers while De Ruyter was crippled in a mine field I laid between Tawi Tawi and Jolo. The remaining destroyers are still in the area close to Manila.

Both capital ships are reported sunk and I've not seen anything more of them, so I think they're gonners! In the afternoon the destroyer Electra is also reported torpedoed and sunk!

On Borneo we have captured Miri and Brunei and are slowly expanding our presence there.
In Malaya the peninsula has been cut, Victoria Point captured and we're marching on Alor Star which has been abandoned. Troops are also pursuing the enemy south of Khota Bharu.

Our Army bombers have harassed enemy ground troops while our fighters are sweeping both Rangoon and Singapore. Losses on the 13th of December were heavy on both sides as Oscars and Zeros took on the AVG in Rangoon and a large number of Buffalos in Singapore. A few more such efforts and we should be able to gain air superiority and be able to send our bombers out without more impunity.

Enemy subs operated on the east coast of the Peninsula and we managed to sink 1 or 2 of the Dutch boats. Our own subs have sunk several loaded tankers, aux vessels and cargo ships in the region.

Status: offline 		I am indeed, lots of improvements and I have to learn to play much the game over again!
AE is a whole dimension more than WitP was, much more so than the upgrade from UV to WitP.

Pilot / aircraft and industry management is truly great and I think combat balance is pretty good as well. A few anomalities yet, but every new patch brings new improvements.

China

In China I have mostly been trying to open some bottle necks by brushing aside Chinese "roadblocks". The aim is to gather an army to go to the offensive with somewhere in Central China, but there is a lot of preprations to be made first.

Andy is trying very hard to get troops into Ichang and isolate the base.
Thus far he has only taken heavy losses, but I have to look after this "hot spot".

In Hong Kong I constantly bombardet the city from the air for a week.
When the Army was in place it bombardet and rested for 2 days before launching an attack when supply levels were in the green.

Hong Kong then fell in the first attack!

After capturing Nauru a small invasion TF sailed back to Jaluit and came under attack from an Allied carrier. We lost a large minelayer and a transport while a destroyer and another large minelayer were damaged.

Zero's from Kwajalein engaged and shot down some of the Lexington's CAP fighters (Buffalo's).
A small contingent of naval bombers then attacked the carrier but failed to score a hit.
- To bad the rest of the naval bombers in the area stayed home, there are ca 40 of them.

The question is were Andy will send his carrier(s) next.
Probably back south towards Australia / Noumea or back to Pearl.

When will the first carrier engagement of the war place?

Status: offline 		Air losses thus far: Loss ratio is 1 / 1.2 in our favor.
Not much to be happy about, but we have taken some heavy losses related to the attacks on Pearl Harbour, Force Z and long range CAP in Malaya. The fight for air superiority in Burma / Malaya and over the Philippines has also been costly.

The good news: Ca 100 Warhawks and 23 AVG fighters have been destroyed!
The not so good news: 135 Zero / Vals / Kates have been lost - but only 35 to enemy fighters.
FLAK and operational losses is the culprit

Hope to be able to work towards a 2-1 kill ratio in 42!

Not done a lot of changes thus far. Increased Zero frame and engine production and accelerated a light carrier while halting some major long time naval constructions.

What I do need is advice regarding how to handle air production and research.
Afraid to mess things up by ordering major changes, especially this early.

1. Which airplanes to increase / decrease production
2. Which ships to accelerate / halt
3. Which industries to expand / stop

Does anyone know how much resources / oil I must ship to Hokkaido on a regular basis?

In a surface engagement near Manila we intercepted the remains of the Dutch flotilla and sent them all to the bottom. It was almost to easy - either they were out of fuel or the difference between UK and the rest of the Allied warships can be measured in light years. A few days ago we tried to sink 3 British destroyers with a superior force and didn't even manage a single hit...

We captured the following bases today:

...and finally Wake Island: Sent a battleship bombardment group from the KB and bombarded the island. The batteries managed to hurt a few ships, but the initial invasion force was sufficient to capture the base. 14 Wildcats reported destroyed - never saw them in action, did Andy forget them?

Others:

Enemy carriers observed heading away from the sw Marshalls and towards the Carolines.
A sub is ordered to attempt to intercept.

Luzon will be a tough nut, sending major reinforcements to Malaya to capture Singapore ASAP.
Need to start regular bombing runs to disrupt building of new forts and to weaken the defenders.

Todays "snapshot"

One of our two surface commerce raiders ran into a squadron of enemy destroyer mine sweepers (DMS).
In the half hearted engagement 2-3 small caliber shells hit the raider while it returned the favor by landing 2-3 14 cm shells.

Actually we got another more potent surprise lurking around on the seven seas.
Hopefully it will ca$h in soon

I have visions of being good enough to play as the evil empire, in fact I have finished a guadalcanal PBEM as them, but to take on the GC... Nope, reckon I'd have it to hell in a handbasket by '43.

I'll just watch the real pros. Might be conned on a 2vs2 maybe - so I could have someone do the production - that just plain scares me.

I got quite a few (scary) thoughts about micro management in AE myself.
Here are some of my thoughts on it;

Industry and research scary indeed, but I'll just take it very easy in the beginning - try to preserve resources and build up the pools as much as possible. After the initial conquests have been completed and oil and resources begin to flow I will decide whether to make any (major) changes.

Aircraft production and research: Think I will follow Joe's approach and stop ac production when there are sufficient of the individual models in the pools. - The challenge is to actually remember to toggle engine / airframe production on and off

Also need to consider which Japanese fighter we should nominate as research object numero uno.
Advice anyone - should we go all out and attempt to advance the introduction of the Frank, George or any other interceptor?

The pilot training / handling with pools, reserve and training commands is challenging.
Advice anyone; how many crack pilots should be preserved in reserve and training command?

Ship construction; a tad simpler since it's only possible to turn of ships that are already building. Designs not yet on the slips does not draw resources. Since the Shinano has been converted to a Taiho class carrier in Scen 2 it is difficult to decide whether to halt construction or not. It's also very tempting to accelerate the Taiho again....

Owah Daddy do we have to go in that room...? There's a monster in the cupboard (or in the fish bowl - Kraken definately).

Enjoy Singers. Try and keep in mind that the Singer's Police don't have the same attitude that alcohol is an essential blood product - necessary for anti-freeze purposes, that maybe the Norwegian Fuzz do.

Difficult to play WitP:AE from jail for 'resting on a public sidewalk' - two years minimum for that. Even stiffer if you 'decide' to revisit the night's libation...

Status: offline 		Great AAR. Good luck taking India, I sure will be watching to see how you do it. I'm in April 42 and still slugging thru Java against a tough opponent. Singapore fell quickly but Burma has been slow due to terrain. If you can control air and sea you should be able to land in India but the American fleet will beat your brains out if you get tied up to long over there. I am sure you know to keep a VERY GOOD SEARCH up, the american carriers went around Australia in my game and attacked my landing in Java before I had adaquate seach established. Sank 2 dozen ak's and then dissappeared

Status: offline 		Recon and then do more recon. Add in setting your FP and some LBA to naval search is a major key to victory. Yes, it adds more micro-management, but overlook it at your peril.

Status: offline 		Good to see you all again I was actually waiting for War in the East, but realized it could be a long wait...since my Decisive Battles ebbed out I needed something to raise the adrenaline level each night

So I can just as well spend 1 hour with AE each evening instead of watching tv.

Yah, that's sound advice! I'm putting most of my long range ac on naval 10-20% naval search.
Each turn I go through every single air unit in the combat zones.

Enemy carriers are gathering new Noumea (as usual). Maybe Andy will consider sling shooting them around Oz if he feel threatened.

- It's actually far from certain I will invade India, if I don't find this a viable option I got another most cunning plan!-)

After putting up a chandelier and a christmas tree I was finally done with today's chores. Gawd, every single thing you buy in Norway has to be customized and assembeled - usually requires a skilled handyman

Ok back to the war!

Today we captured Jesselton while Kuching was invaded.
Slow crawl south on the Malayan peninsula. Still building up in Luzon, going to ship reinforcements from Hong Kong but need to sweep more mines and gather some transports.

The KB and Mini KB will both meet at Truk for some R&R before heading out again.
