Hi all,

One small tidbit... when we went to Vienna we also visited the St. Stephen's Cathedral there...

We climbed inside the south tower (tower is 135 meter high and you can climb to about 70 meters of height - to the observation room) via round staircase with 430+ stairs.

All the way up in stairway and into the observation room at the top there were inscriptions on the walls (the stone used for building was rather soft limestone). Some of them dated to 19th century but mostly were new.

What especially captured my attention was several engraved signatures in the observation room (at the very top you can go). I noticed several signatures with German names with dates overlaping the fall of Vienna (and Russians entering the city) the biggest signature was one German name and date 11-14 April 1945 (thus he was there at the very end in heavily damaged building) . I also noticed many Russian (in Cyrillic) signatures in late April and May 1945...

Been bright and sunny here too, but maybe a bit windy, still it got up to 25C though.

The temperature is supposed to rise to 27C by the weekend, with a big fat high in the Tasman Sea.

Do you guys down there ever sunbath in the sea or is it too dangerous (UV wise)?

Hi Leo, I live in the Alps beside Lake Wanaka, which is a feed by rivers feed from glaciers, so the Lake doesn't warm up that much. Used to swim in the lake when I was younger, but stick to the pool now.

Yes the UV is very dangerous down here in the high-summer, very easy to get sun-burn. Us locals have always been aware of the sun, but sadly not the Holiday-makers.

Well, it's thawing here now. Started last night, and now it's in full swing. It'll take a while to get rid of all the snow, though.

I hate the thaw, mud, and sometime flooding. If you're trying to build a house, the site turns into a bog!

OK... no sunbathing then... but with Southern Alps the skiing is very good option...

That's nice as well!

BTW, how high are those Southern Alps near you? Above 1 km?

Good morning, Dez. It's a bit chilly here, just below freezing, but very sunny and expected to warm up to around 50 F today. That doesn't bite too much.

I disagree - A "Whoo Hoo" is motivated it is if it's the day before Christmas, you have loaded up on mulled wine and have all the day for yourself to play AE
