******Aboard the LCT, USS Sedgwick County, Near Suva Harbor, August 8, 1943******

The ship's Captain surveys the huge, gathering convoy now making its way SSE at 8 kts. His eyes are drawn to the flag atop the mast of the vessel 300 yds off his port bow. She is an AK of some sort, not a Liberty ship as her superstructure is wrong. The flag is wrong as well. He lifts his binoculars to identify the unidentified flag.

Ship's Captain: Well, I'll be damned. That is NOT regulation. <His mild pique turns to alarm as the vessel of his attention begins to make full speed and turns hard in his direction>
SIGNALMAN! SIGNAL THAT VESSEL OFF OUR PORT BOW! TELL HER TO MAKE HER COURSE 150! <He lifts his glasses again to make out the name of the vessel..."June" something perhaps no.."J-U-B-A-L-space-A-space-E-A-R-L". In a flash it is clear to him>

SWEET JESUS SHE MEANS TO RAM US! SOUND GENERAL QUARTERS! BELAY THAT
SIGNAL! SIGNAL WE ARE FALLING OUT OF LINE TO STARBOARD! HARD A'STARBOARD!

Those Confederates still holding a grudge??

Looks like I made it too easy with the "Stars and Bars" header.

Important safety tip. Never, EVER, put a ship named after opposing generals in adjacent columns.

USS Jubal A Early

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jubal_Anderson_Early

USS Sedgwick County

Named, indirectly, after Gen. John Sedgwick

Interestingly, Early and Sedgwick directly faced each other at the Second Battle of Fredricksburg where Sedgwick had the job of occupying the Southern forces guarding Fredricksburg while the main Union force tried to cross the river behind them. In point of fact, Early, with inferior forces was assigned the job of keeping Sedgwick occupied while Lee marched back to Chancellorsville and opned a can of whoop ass.

So I take this managment class and most of it is about empowering employees and that sort of rubbish. My first thought was what is the point of being the boss and then giving all the power back to the employees? Holy heck. That is bass ackwards if you ask me.

Anyway, most of it is rubbish but I really liked the time/motion analysis idea to improve efficiency especially with this new AE monster that keeps growling for my attention. And even more especially with Stalker Girl demanding carnal attention all the time. She has also begun to needle me about "saving the world" when I retreat to the office and fire up WITP. So I figure I need to manufacture some time somewhere so I do this time/motion anlysis for my morning routine on work days. After some thought, I now have a programmed coffee-grinder, I take some English muffins and coffee in the car while I'm driving, I stopped taking the newspaper as it just slowed me down and most of it makes me angry now anyway AND I discovered that I could save about 20-30 seconds by taking a leak while I am in the shower washing me hair. I discovered I could go "hands free" and hit the drain 97% of the time by assuming a "wide stance" and even if I miss a little the water is running so it's not too bad.

On day two of my newly implemented Toyota Lean strategy everying is going great and I am scoring a perfect hit on the drain and then....Stalker Girl walks in and it's a glass enclosed shower so I decide I need to put the brakes on real fast like. I am here to tell you that is not easy. My schedule was wrecked! I have been late for work for 4 days straight.

*******Official Weather Station, Alice Spring Aerodrome, Australia, August 8, 1943*********

Man in gray and orange jumpsuit: <finishes an electrical connection and flips a switch. A small fan gently displaces a rectangle of canvas netting laden with water. There is a small but noticeable cooling of the air in front of the device. He moves the device closer to the wooden enclosure which houses the offical thermometer of the Australian Weather Service for Alice Springs.> Ok, it works. Now remember, you need to come out every morning and fill the reservoir with water...and call me it the thing stops working. Look, you are now official Meteorologist for Alice Springs. This is important for the war effort, do you understand?

Teen boy with serious pimples: Yes sir!

Man in gray and orange jumpsuit: Atta boy! Science is fun, isn't it?

Teen boy with serious pimples: Yes sir! And may I ask what the device is for.

Man in gray and orange jumpsuit: Ah, Jeez, I don't know. I think it's good for the wood or something. <replaces his cap on his head...the cap reads "M&M Enterprises Climate Services Division">

Cap Mandrake,

Much as I admire the admirable qualities of Mr Minderbinder, I wonder how, in post #3469 he was at the Honolulu Planning Committee and in post #3488 he was at Los Gatos, California both on the same day, 9 August 1943.  Truly a major marvel of piston engine aircraft technology (not to mention he was in the Philippines on 7 August 1943).

I feel it belittles me to raise this point, but for the purposes of historical accuracy, and not to mention to avoid any unsavoury imputations being made against him during the forthcoming Presidential campaign, it might be useful to clear up this issue now.

Alfred, if I was running Mr. Minderbinder's campaign, I'd just book the Beach Boys as the opening band at his campaign appearances, give the press exclusive tickets for some comfy front row seats next to some hot blonde California girls, have the band start off with a rousing rendition of "Round, round, get around, I get around," and have Milo offer that explanation as his only answer. Then throw in a little speechifying with "Hope!" "Change!" and I bet the media will lie supine at Milo's feet (Hey---Implausible as it sounds, it could work!)

I also bet that wood preservation and hydration treatment just implemented at the weather station in Alice Springs pans out. Someday that temperature record could prove to be real useful!

I just hope that the weight/air pressure/takeoff roll/air temperature specs for the M&M Enterprises B-25 Operator's Manual include special, updated conversion factors when inputing with "M&M Climate Services temperature data."

Lest we forget: the Stargate technology was available in World War IIa (or was it b... i can't keep up) that allowed teleportation of entire army formations from one side of the globe to the other... i am guessing that M&M Enterprises has secretly developed this into a means to get Milo around in a hurry... but, of course, he COULD also be using doubles...

*******Lexington Reservoir, near Los Gatos, California, 23:30, August 9, 1943*******

A small motor launch approaches a beautiful, new PB2Y. Flawless aluminum shines in the full moonlight. The light is strong enough that one can make out the orange and gray paint scheme. There is a small brass plaque near the door that reads "Manufactured for Admiral Chester Arthur Nimitz, Consolidated Aircraft Company, Buffalo, New York, June 23, 1943". Her guns removed and extra tanks added, she was built to be the personal transport aircraft of CinCPAC. The reader might then assume the motor launch carries the Admiral. The reader would be wrong. The USN declined to take possession of the custom PB2Y. It was some embarrasing miscue over wing deicers or something of the sort. Instead whe was declared unflightworthy and sold for scrap aluminum for $380 to some lawyer from New York.

Two beautiful Fillipinas in grey and orange uniforms wait at the door. It has been a long day, the 8:15 flight from Honolulu after the Planning meeting, nearly 12 hrs. in the air, a dusk landing on the reservoir and now, another long flight planned. A third woman, no less beautiful, with Germanic features also waits at the door.

Beautiful woman with Germanic features: <calls out to the approaching launch> How did the meeting go Mr.Minderbinder?

Young man in fine linen trousers (now creased): Swimingly! He loves the story idea. I think the iceberg photos won him over.

Nope. He is AWOL. Even the Red Cross cant find him. I used to have his phone number but can't find it. I have assumed command of all USN assets. I can't believe how many aircraft carriers they have. He had planned a landing at Palau. I have put that on hold for something more "energetic"

Gen. Short: ...right, so it is decided then, 1st Marine and 3rd Marine with 2 coy of 193rd Armored go ashore at H-Hour, with Americal in reserve, what I don't understand is why we have to sail all the way around the south and east side of the island to land up here in the north. Why don't we just...<walks closer to map> go through here...the...<looks closely>..Strait of Formosa. why don't you just send your ships through there, Chips?

Admiral Carpdender, 7th Fleet CO: Naval Treaty of 1925. Section XXII, second paragraph. <looks at notes> "whoever shall retain possession of the Pescadores Islands may, unless the right of passage has been explicitly granted in writing, compel the vessels of another nation to stop for one day upon reaching the Pescadores Islands.

Gen. Short: Chips, I gotta tell you that seems really stupid. The Strait of Formosa has got to be 100 miles wide. I mean, what the Hell could they do about it?

Admiral Carpdender, 7th Fleet CO: 111, but that is not the point. What if they lodge of treaty violation complaint with the League of Nations? Do you realize you could be personally responsible? And, now that we have discussed it, we could both be accused of conspiracy.

Gen. Short: "Conspiracy", you mean like the attack on Pearl Harbor?

Admiral Carpdender, 7th Fleet CO: Oh come on, Walt. Everybody knew that was coming. I guess they might have attacked Manila or Singapore but Pearl was the obvious choice. It was in the House Rules for Christ's sake.

Gen. Short: Well, what about the Naval Treaty of 1925, then?

Admiral Carpdender, 7th Fleet CO: House Rules override the Naval Treaty of 1925, everybody knows that.

Gen. Short: Well, what say we just burn the minutes from todays meeting and we make a pact to keep quiet about it?

Admiral Carpdender, 7th Fleet CO: You want to add obstruction of justice? Nope, I say we avoid the Formosa Strait. The day we lose sailing around the island we would have spent waiting at Pescadores. What if someone doesn't get the "Do Not Unload" order and they begin unloading at Pescadores? Can you imagine the cluster f***? No, thank you. It will look like we are heading to Okinawa or something as we head around the east side of the island. We can have the air boys bomb Okinawa just to rattle their cage.........

A large supply convoy with RAF ground support personnel arrives of Northern Luzon. About half head to Batan (with it's level 4 airfield) and half to Laoag (with its level 5). They are covered by all the RN carriers (4 x CV plus Hermes because I felt bad leaving her behind) who take up station off Northern Luzon. The Japs send in a flotilla of MSW's to take on the PT boats at Batan. This proves to be a bad idea as Batan now has 2 squadrons of Beauforts, a squadron of RAAF B-25J's and some Dutch Avengers. In addition, they find themselves within range of Avenger II's from the carriers.

Takao airfield is broken. All Jap air has been evacuated from Formosa. He can scarcely have failed to notice the threat to Formosa. If the Jap carriers are to be commited to the defence of Formosa, this might be a good time as he now knows the RN carriers are nearby. To get to them, however, it would require moving within range of LBA from Batan and Laoag and Tuguegarao. These bases will soon be very deadly with the influx of supplies and ground support. When the USN carriers show up with the landing forces, the balance will shift. He may be saving the carriers for the defence of the main islands or Okinawa.

It's the lovely German spy who seduced Lt. de Groot (i think i spelled that right) and a certain hairy Captain of the USAAF.

Quite

Has she switched sides or do the Germans want to know what is going on with Milo?

It's been a week +.

Mandrake, put down the egg nog, kiss the last remaing fresh young LVN in the clinic lingering under the mistletoe, and
GET BACK TO THE WAR!

Of course, if you have been skiing up at Bogus Basin or Sun Valley with Stalker Girl, then of course all is forgiven...
