I have posted this problem on the support page but have not yet had an answer. I am itching to play and so in the meantime I wonder has anyone else had this problem?

I put the CD-Rom into the drive and .....nothing happens, nothing at all. Matrix sent a replacement CD but this acts in the same way.

I have tested other games to ensure there is nothing wrong with the hardware and sure enough CIV IV, Empire Total War, Empires in Arms etc - they all load perfectly okay.

Has this happened to anyone else? Am I doing anything stupid?

Putting the CD in the drive doesn't run the game.
You have to install the game.

Looks like your CD drive is not set to "Autorun".
If that is so do this:

1. put the CD in the CD drive

2. Navigate with Explorer to the drive and you should see an entry
WarinthePacificAdmiral'sEdition-SetupRelease-v10079DR.exe

3. Double Click that line and the installation process should be initiated.

EDIT: In case there is something wrong with the CD drive you can also copy that file to your hard disk and run the setup from there. If and when that file cannot be copied (read), or the setup file cannot be executed, then there is something wrong wtth either the CD drive (data cannot be copied) or the CD itself (bad data).
Just trying to point out some options to narrow the field of problems (if there are any).

I had similar problem years ago, my CD drive just did not recognize one CD-rom, no matter what I did. Everything else worked fine. The problem was the CD-drive: first I get same kind of new drive, and nothing. Then I get new drive from another manufacturer, and bingo it worked! Very mystic indeed.

Maybe you should try it in another computer?

Highly recommended.

IF it runs on another computer most certainly the CD drive is the culprit. If not most certainly the CD is damaged.

Warspite1

You must excuse my inappropriate description of all things computery

Thanks for your suggestions but sadly I cannot get the damn thing to install. Despite being set to Autorun and despite going through explorer - nothing, absolutely nothing. How frustrating is that??

Difficult to say without further details.

Do see the exe file?

If so
what EXACTLY happens when you double click the exe file?

If really nothing happens when you double click the file my only recommendation is to seek help from a friend nearby who can go with you through the process step by step at your PC.

EDIT: Really no excuse needed for the way you express yourself. There is no appropriate way to describe computer things. Just use the words natural to you and people willing to help will understand what you mean.

IF you can see the exe file, drag it to the desktop. You can double click it on the desktop to install.

This sounds like an antivirus action. The exe file has probably been disabled by an antivirus program.
That's something you can investigate on your own (check your antivirus logs).

IF it's an antivirus issue you can do this:
- DISCONNECT your PC from the network (so you are save from viruses from the net)
- Pause your antivirus program
- Put the cd in the drive
- find the exe file and execute it (double click).
If that works then you have verified that it's an antivirus issue.
Don't forget to reconnect you PC to the net afterwards.

However, if it's not an antivirus issue we need more information.
To get more information it might help if you
- Right Click on the exe file (the one you copied to the desktop)
- select Properties at the very bottom (may take a moment to display the properties because of the size - 473 MB)
- do a screenshot and post it here

Rainer - thank you for your continued patience with this.

I turned off the auto protect and the firewall and tried to install again. Still nothing.

When I go through the explorer and open the contents of the CD-Rom I get two files; AutoRun.Inf and the .exe file.

If I double click or right click on the .exe file and request Open, then nothing happens (if I do the same thing on the AutoRun file I get:

Installation Failed

If I go through the "load a program from a CD or Floppy" route then again absolutely nothing happens even though it identifies the program to install.

Finally, when I drag the .exe to the desk top and double click, I get:

Unable to Open Archive File

Either try installing into a new folder, or remove any folders which have been created by previous install attempts, you might have a combination of AV issues conflicting with game security issues.

If this persists, we might have to get on the phone.

I think it is possible to run the game - I've run it at least - hence I know one guy has gotten it to run!!!

I don`t think its created any folders (although I could be wrong) - it simply does nothing, nichts, nada...well you get the picture

One last thing (then I have to give up ):

Double Click the exe file, then wait at least 1 full minute (better 3 to 5).
The exe file is fairly large (473 MB). First the AV program has to check the file (Kaspersky needs about 30 seconds for this on my system), then the exe file will be loaded into system ram, which may need another couple of seconds.
To be on the save side: double click and wait up to 5 minutes.
If then still nothing happens, well ... I don't know.

May be you really need to go through this with a Matrix Support specialist on the phone.
Hope everything will turn out OK.
Crossing fingers ....

Yes I tried that. Occasionally I heard murmering noises from the CD drive, teasing me into thinking it was going to play ball after all. Then, just when I dared to hope that THIS TIME it was all going to happen....nothing AGAIN. No error message, no bang, no.....nothing. What a *&%$£%^&$"

Thanks anyway Rainer

Yeah, that sounds great - if only there were such people !!!

I think for each game - we probably need to support it ourselves - so I'm willing to get on the phone - I've actually never had to do this so far - in 5.5 years - so I'm hoping this is a unique case!

I have a similar problem when attempting to install from CD, receiving this message when the CD-ROM is in autorun or accessing the drive directly: -
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005).

No problems installing or running WPO from CD.

Interestingly I have a similar problem when attempting to download StormEagle's "Jutland" in that I end up with an invalid Win32 application!

Warspite1,

Have you tried any other CDs during this time? Other games or other software? Do they install successfully?

Regards,

- Erik

Yes they do I spoke to Warspite1 the other night to try and help he has installed other matrix games we tried disabling AV and copying the exe to the hard drive nothing worked - unfortunately I am not a tekkie so I could not diagnose the issue.

His system was able to copy the exe from CD to the hard drive so its not a CD issue it just wont run the exe.

His system is XP.

Erik - yes, as Andy says, I tried re-loading Civ IV, Rome Total War and Matrix`s Empire in Arms. All loaded without any problems.

If you were able to copy the EXE off the CD - the final step I could think of would be to rename that EXE before running - if AV is inhibiting - the rename might either trick it - or trip it again - and worst case if it trips it again you would at least maybe see some evidence of that.

I would also check the registry to clean out any AE entries - if there are any.

You need to be more specific.
quote:

No - that did not work either......
doesn't say anything.
Again, what EXACTLY happens when you try to execute the file?
Please note EXACTLY what message(s) you get.
Otherwise nobody will be able to help or narrow down the cause of the problem.
Screenshots with the (presumably) Windows message on screen also can be helpful.

Rainer I was answering a specifc comment from jwilkerson. I have been through the questions you raise with Andy Mac and advised of responses from the computer. This query was taken off line but has come back on line....
