How can convoy collisions be reduced?

By using smaller convoys?

Can a TF leader with a certain attribute make a difference?

Any other ways?

Smaller convoys definately make a differance. No idea about leaders tbh.

There are a number of factors, TF size being one. Speed is the primary factor, full speed increases chances. Also combat, weather, and good old random. Leaders have no affect.

Smartass answer : '1'

Normal answer : My convoys are usually in the 10/15 ship range and I haven't had collisions yet, but I may just be very lucky.

Ships in the convoy hit each other. I have seen the AI have collisions when they had a large convoy get intercepted by my surface action groups.

In my PBEM game I've got the report that a Japanese BB was sunk in a collision when KB was retiring from the PH strike. We're now 20 days further and she's still listed as sunk, still unlikely, but who knows

Well a carrier almost sank a CA in the Med in the late 60's or early 70's. It does happen and that was peace time. I think the CA was the Leahy.

Mogami hit Nachi during the Leyte invasion. Both ships were later finished off by other means.

I think the key is size of a TF and panic... I got a USN CA into an IJN invasion convoy at Ocean Island in early December '41. It was facing 2 CL, about 5 DD, a few PBs and a couple of AKs all at anchor. Anyways just as the entire IJN force finally got moving the most heavily damaged CL managed to plough into a DD. Immediately afterward I managed to get hits on this DD which had, till then, managed to evade my fire.

My interpretation is that as all the ships got moving from being anchored the odds mounted until, eventually, the ship which had had its bridge hit by an 8" shell ( the CL ) and so, presumably, had loads of negative rolls to "everything the presence of a captain and bridge crew contributes to" ploughed into a DD, damaged it and slowed it sufficiently that it was now a much easier target.

Mogami also collided with Mikuma off of Midway during that battle. In my CG Mogami collided with a DD off of Tawi Tawi while fighting an ABDA TF of mine.

In my pbem 4 raiding Japanese Cls hit one of my small AKLs running supply to Port Blair. Sunk it but not after two of them collided. Sweet!

Ditto.

I havent got enough ships in the same place to build a big convoy.....

(You watch, next turn I'll lose a ship to an accident!!!)

And don't forget The Bedford Incident.

Well, not exactly a collision . . .

Here's another, less well-known, "worse" outcome of a carrier meeting a small boy. RIP USS Evans.
