... about barges. This may apply to other types of landing craft as well. I'm laboring over a campaign opener (WB knows which one I mean) and I've discovered something inconvenient about barges. They don't operate in shallow water, which means they can't begin any sort of scenario there. You couold deploy them there, but they'd be stuck. They can load a unit from an adjacent hex (good thing, or you'd never get anything on there), but there's no way to get a second unit on there. So, unless you're using the ill-advised Make Me Half a Beach button on the map editor to get the barges, they're limited to transporting one thing at a time, which is kinda annoying. I think I've noticed a similar thing with some of the British water craft in the Desperate Measures (that is the raid on St. Nazaire, isn't it). Which makes for getting the British boys off the beach a bit sticky. Is this intentional? An accident of putting the load-only-into-same-hex rule? DFW

Very annoying, especially when they are able to handle a larger load...Even with all of the major improvements in amphibious assaults and landings, there are still, as you say, David, some sticky situations. I hope you'll hang in there with that campaign. It should be a good one! Wild Bill ------------------ In Arduis Fidelis Wild Bill Wilder Coordinator, Scenario Design Matrix Games

Fear not. It's coming along. Actually, the barge problem sort of reminded me of something else I wanted to try, which worked. And working on the campaign is fun, even if it does prompt the occasional expletive. DFW

The only time I really had to deal with loading barges was a 1930's Japanese long campaign under v2.3. I gave me one river crossing (though no assault boats), luckily I did buy 2 barge sections with support points. I seem to remember that I could put more than one unit in, by clicking on the unit to be loaded then the l key then the barge and repeating. The same way that you put more than one unit in a cargo aircraft for airdrops. I may be wrong on this one, it was several months ago that I played that one and the only other river battle I ran across was defending against one at the end of my German WWII campaign where I toasted the barge carriers before they got to river and thus won easily. thanks, John.

I don't know what your scenario looks like but I have used the deep water hex to convert shallow water to deep for barges before.

Tried that. Didn't work out. So I'm working around it. I just like to point these things out as stuff you have to think about in scenario design for campaigns. DFW
