Well it is not of course.

Yes! Because it is a small timers trophy for lack of foresight and inability to adjust. The same trophy that extinct species and the US Auto industry have on their mantles.

Big timer trophies like The FIFA World Cup Trophy cannot be won outright. They belong to a part of a larger organization and are given back unless the trophy is won again. He doesn't even technically own the money in his pockets.

...And without having to activate it online, or having to watch its dowload limit and nagging icon in the taskbar, hm?

Yes, he paid 5-10 times more for the allusion this provides. I bet he is not installing his 5 1/4" floppy games.

Funny you should mention that. I have started accepting funds for a non-profit (read non-taxable) investigative committee which will investigate the plausibility for a presidential run.

That should help the unemployment rate a bit. More so than the... never mind. Getting political again, like in the Norad Santa thread.

Dude, to designate Greybriar to be a member of an extinct species is one thing, but if you put words in my mouth i never said, I may become less polite and either set the Führer's dog on you or wash your mouth with soap.

Reminds me of politicians, who (after they have lost an election) would still babble for hours just to come to the conclusion that the loss was in fact a win.

I really do not see why anyone has to be a winner or loser in this. I understand some people are afraid of change and others are afraid of technology. Others are unable to adapt to change or understand that hey themselves have already changed. I cannot say that a person who denies themselves joy because of an imaginary line in the sand is a loser or has lost but I think that people who are willing to try new things do benefit more than people who do not. What a boring world it would be if everything was the same.

This is a great example of what happens when Greybriar fails adapt and is unwilling to work with people. He can print out a copy of that picture and put it in his trophy case.

Well, Larry, you might want to rethink your suggestion:

If he'd join politics, I could see (his) fellow citizens having to deal with new "technologies", and with him babbling about his "experiences" with the new tech, even though his experiences were limited to signing the order and pushing the START button at the opening ceremony.
Then, 3 years after the new tech (plant) had been around, he'd boldly explain to the people in neighboring villages, that the claimed damages and pollutions would be negligible in fact, and that their dismissive attitude towards the new technology would be the concept of an extinct few.
Surely, he wouldn't make it through the next election.

I advise against joining politics.

Well, I'll throw my 2 cents in...I absolutely hate/despise downloading full games over any of the services out there. I prefer hard copy. And no, I dont want to download and then burn it. I want the original. And yes, I have some steam crap cluttering my system. The biggest is Empire:Total War. Do I play it? No. I forgot to shut off the auto patching  and Steam patched it up to the point of it not working. Havent played it since.....Another problem(non-steam related) I had with direct downloads is when I bought Total Pro Football years ago as a DD. Wanted to play it a few weeks ago. Couldnt. Company out of business. Confirmation e-mail gone many many hard-drives and upgrades ago. But I dragged out my old copyof x-com:terror of the deep(3.5 disk), from another defunct company and viola..it worked..no drm, no idiotic internet "activation" or no internet access required.... If my broadband(thru TW) goes down I cant play about 5 or so games... Why bother? I was seriously thinking of utilizing Steam and purchasing 1 or 2 of its "sale" games over Christmas break... Oops, my phone line got cut by a truck doing some work on a tree. No phone or internet for 1 day.So no purchase which I believe is a good thing. I might not have been able to play my new purchases....... The most I can accept is the Matrix way. DD plus hard copy.

That can be said about any publisher/developer. Whether they sall via download or CD/DVD.

What about games made for DOS, or win95, or win98,....the good majority of them will not work on modern OS's. So your point about maybe someday not being able to play a game you bought on steam, well that applies to EVERY game, downloaded or bought in a store.

What absolute tosh. No offense Scott_WAR, but how can an old game that came on CD that will still run happily in DOSBox or VMWare or even natively with some tweaks be compared to a game that will never work again if Steam goes the way of the Dodo? The only reason these old games won't run is if you don't have the tech knowledge or old OS on which to run them. It's got nowt to do with DRM or online activation requirements. Apples and oranges. Try again

Yeah, poor old Santa still hasn't recovered from that! I blame JudgeDredd for that one. He came in, passed the loaded gun around and then ran away laughing while carnage ensued lol! Bloody typical. In fact, that tactic reminds me of a dear departed ex-member of this family who was the absolute master. Can anyone guess the name I'm thinking of? The old timers here will know immediately, of course. He has gone down in the legendary annals of Matrix history. No prizes for guessing, but I'm not going to name that name as I don't want to upset Erik or put JD's blood pressure up hehe

Clearly you were willing to purchase through Steam yet were unable to do so. This could have happened to any downloadable content or purchase from a brick and mortar store where weather could prevent you or employees from getting there.

But you did admit you were getting ready to make a purchase. May I ask why? With all of the problems you outline why would you even consider a purchase?

There is a lot of fear in this thread.

There are a few more reasons. If you don't have needed hardware, media goes bad, you lose the media, dog ate my CD.

I think we can all agree that if you cannot hold it in your hand it isn't real.

I typed up a response to your post Jim, but decided against it,.......for the simple reason that there are those who like steam, and there are those who dont. It doesnt appear any amount of discussion is going to change any opinions, but, and I feel this is why those that dislike steam are so vehement about it,............ is that steam isnt going anywhere. As most of the steam haters here have even admitted, the majority of the industry is headed in that direction, and steams success is probably going to mean more and more go to the same or a similiar model.

I think it will be more palatable when the technology devices change. Phone apps already do this and you do not hear much about it. Some laptops already do not support internal DVD drives and floppies.

Being a wee bit harsh there on JD.

The ex pat lives-he is here with us-his name is Legion-as he is many- (a modest exaggeration). Of course , he is not the only one playing that game.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say Steam isn't intentionally going to kill anyone that uses their service let alone lead us all into the slaughterhouse.

Some in this thread furrow their brows in confusion and fear at the changing world around them. Heartbeats heavy, eyes darting about looking for something they can understand and identify with. They desperately try to clutch their game CD's and floppy diskette's to their breast like some kind of security blanket while iPhone apps and iTunes are being downloaded in abundance by insane revolutionary youth who are too blind to see the folly of their ways.

You mean the guy that got banned almost two years ago, and now he's possibly back under a new name, well, fake name of course?

Hint: We're not talking about you Emobama.

EDIT: Jim, it was actually me that got that Santa thread off into politics. I said that being lied to about Santa reminded me of the president or something like that. I don't remember the exact words, but politics ensued after that. I still feel the total guilt and opressoin from throwing that thread off of it's intended path...

I think that hardware is not a tiny thing. You are correct that you may be able to run VMWare but how is that 5 1/4" floppy working out for you? Seriously, stay away from downloadable media. It is so scary 5 year old's are doing it.

OT, regrettably. I have to point out the futility of using the ignore feature of this forum when everyone keeps quoting the ignored. Just a couple of weeks ago I used that feature for the second time since my registration here-and yet I get to read everything the guy says.

The feature would work well if the target was not the one stirring the pot, but then he wouldn't be a green button target. Oh well, just another electronic service like DRM's; it does not inhibit those it is meant to.

No, I wasnt willing to purchase using steam I was forced to(previous games).

Why was I willing, you ask? well weather is one reason, but to let you know, we dont close our stores due to weather.I didnt want to scrape 2 inches of ice off my windshield before driving 5 miles. Price is another, although that is usually never an issue with me, considering how many full priced Matrix games I own, and lastly pneumonnia. Couldnt get around that last one. Then you go throw in the fact that the nearest gamestore happens to be a gamestop which has less pc games than my one bookshelf.

This time the prices were so cheap as to make me willing to try steam with a brand new complete dl product instead of a store bought game that requires steam, ala Empire. After sitting there in the peaceful presence of no ringing phone, No mother in law, no idiots trying to sell me sat tv etc etc, I realized that if I bought one of those games even 2 hours earlier, and then couldnt get it to work because it couldnt connect to wherever I would be ready to bend, fold and mutilate someone.I dont need that kind stress. Just like I wont buy drm heavy games anymore, no matter how much i'm jonesing for them ( certain WW1 era naval games come to mind)I think Im going to stay far far away from steam for the foreseeable future. I figure if I want cheap I can hit amazon or ebay,
