Yeah JD, I remember when I worked in Homebase we sold chairs like that. They were a bugger to stack, though. It's all about those back legs...

Ah Crap! I just talked myself out of buying this game and now you've got me wanting it again!!!!!
D2D has it on for $20. But I'd have to go get a joystick too......

Is there any plans to get rid of the "phone home to play" DRM does anyone know?

Sure is pretty.....

Although I'm not sure 100% confirmed, it has been mentioned that sometime in the future you would be able to play offline. Even though getting the hang of the game is hard, defintely worth the $20. I would get it before the discoutn ends.

Really difficult to shoot a plane down. At least for me,(Bad hand/wrist.) Played the Russian Roulette scenario with an Alb DV.

Naturally, the first opponent was a Dolphin.......

First engagement, a head on pass. Pulled the trigger, and........... nothing.......

Would really help if I charged the guns first........

Round and round we go. Got hit, and a great red haze fills my screen. Tried to set dowm, and the ground rudely flipped me over.

Second attempt. Whadda ya know, another Dolphin. Round and round, head on passes, lots of stalling, (by me). I manage to get guns on him a few times. Was never sure I hit him untill, low and behold, his port upper wing, followed by the lower, rip off.

I'll be damnned, I got a kill. Then the next opponent, a Camel, shows up. Twists and turns till we settle for a head on pass. Very short fight, as our port wings touched. Ahh well.......

@Aurelian:

What's your first impression, though (gfx, look and feel, number of missions, general amount of content... is there a mission builder)?

@All:

With the low price of $20, I am tempted to get it...
But I don't feel like getting a top-notch joystick, so I would probably end up using my old "guitar" (GRAVIS Phoenix joystick), where I can program 40 something keys, plus it has rudder/thrust control. Would you guys advise against playing Rise with such an old stick (as it may reduce the fun) or not?

Dolphin is my favourite. Seems quite powerful and stable. Certainly the easiest I've flown imo.

To all - it's very, very difficult. But it's a must buy for the price if you are anything close to enjoying flight sims. I haven't played with simplified flight model and targeting help etc, but will do tonight to see if the difficulty eases up. But remember this - we all want good AI in all our games - the AI is this game seems to be brilliant. It's hard to get a kill but not only because the birds are hard to fly - but the AI are all over the place...well, the fighters I've come across anyway.

With the people suffering from "twisty hand" on the stick rudder...I've set my Joystick yaw deadzone to 60% I think (left hand value - there are two params you can adjust for yaw). That seemed to cure the twisty hand syndrome for me. pretty much.

As for a joystick, a simple cheap one should be enough. Only real die hard or people with more expendable cash go for the big babies. I have one of these and it's good enough...very sensitive and a good load of buttons.

For the Brits
For the US peeps

There are cheaper, but I wouldn't know about those. Also for another £25 you could get the force feedback, but I always found force feedback to be a pain in my joystick although I wouldn't do without force feedback on my steering wheel.

Well.... couldn't pass up the deal.... so many games so little time.....
Will slip out this weekend and get a joystick, but probably won't get flying until next week when my wife is out of town.....

Anybody tried online flying/fighting? After I get some practice in maybe we can form a Matrix Squadron......

From what I gather, online isn't so hot right now - but one of the things they are focussing on as it'll be a big part of the game...also I think what online there is it is only co-op!

As Grim said - it's flying in rain. Doesn't look quite as good in a still pic as it does ingame

I flew my first sortie in the rain the other night, and my whole flight is in Pfalz DIIIa's, which are...yep, gray! So, I'm trying to fly straight & level without an artificial horizon to help, the sky is overcast with fog all around and my flight members are in gray aircraft. Easily the most difficult flying conditions of my long, flight sim career.

Oh, and then there's the dogfight with British SE5's in that soup.

Somehow, two of us managed to form up and rtb safely.

Yes, there is a mission editor/builder. Multiplayer is coop only, but that's ok as there are two sides and folks are good about keeping the sides even.

Rumor has it that there is going to be a dynamic single player campaign, and that neoqb is working on that right now.

One word of caution: If you try to run RoF with Windows 7 you're taking your chances whether it will work or not. That OS is not supported for RoF, yet. But will be in the future.

It sure is good looking.
When they drop the online requirement for singleplayer and give it a decent campaign, I'll be the first in line to buy it.

Wow, thanks JD. Those screenshots are wonderful. I love the landscapes below. Flight sims have come a long way since I last played one.

To post a positive to Slicks post - I have Windows 7 Home Edition 64bit installed and the game runs flawlessly. I haven't had a single crash/hang/glitch.

I haven't played online yet so can't comment on that.

Good to hear as that's what my setup is. Anything special about the install? Other than do it as Admin of course.....

Yes, don't install to C:\Program Files

Instead, create a directory called C:\Games and install into that.

Of course, you could call that directory anything you'd like, so C:\Games is just an example.

Many people using Vista and Windows 7 have had problems when they installed into C:\Program Files.

Also, make sure to let the installer install the latest Direct-X and anything else it wants to install. There is a third party folder that comes with the download, and if the installer doesn't prompt you to install Direct-X and that other Microsoft C++ 2005 app, then go into that third party apps folder and make sure you install everything(as Administrator, of course).

Edit: Almost forgot...currently RoF does not support SLI or Crossfire, so if you have that enabled, it could actually lower your fps in the game. So the word on the street is that you should keep SLI and Crossfire disabled for RoF until neoqb adds support for it.

I'm using a single Radeon 4870(1GB) and it's smooth as a baby's bottom with all detail level set to high.

Also, in Nvidia control panel or ATI CCC, make sure AA and AF is set to "Application control".

I know, I make it sound like RoF is picky about everything. I can be, depending upon what OS and hardware you have. I've been spending my off time doing tech support on the RoF forum, and there are lots of folks having issues with Windows 7 and Vista 64-bit.

The neoqb devs are actually encouraging people to stay on Windows XP for now.
