Hi; I'm thinking of buying WWII:ToW this week (never had a chance to play the original).

My question is: are national leaders represented in ToW? I know generals are.

If, for example, I decide to play as The Soviet Union -will I get events or decisions that are representative of Stalin's choices? Does Stalin have "ratings", like in the HoI series? Can I promote Zhukov to commander of the Red Army or enact purges against the Red Army's officer core? When you play as the Soviets, do you usually invade Finland? Thanks in advance

Yes you get to make grand strategic decisions. On your own as to when and where to attack, what to research, what to produce, assign leaders and utilize diplomatic points for coups and exerting pressure on minors. There are also events that get fired where you have to decide a course of action vs an alternative course of action. There are no ratings for the county leaders as they are represented in abstract so to speak by the AI or the human playing that country. You assign leaders to divisions and corps. They have a leader range that allows them to effect other units within range. Some have "created" HQ units using division size units, assigning a leader and keeping them behind the fighting units, exerting their combat bonuses to units within range. There is no specific Army Group leader other than how I described above. There may be an officer purge event for the Russians, but since I haven't played as the Russians I don't know for sure. Again not having played as the Russians I'mnot sure what other human players do about Finland. I have not played a game yet where the Russian AI hasn't demanded the border territories from Finland and Romania. Sometimes it leads to war, sometimes it doesn't, depending on the minor country response. Hope this helps. In spite of some issues that are well documented in other threads, this is still a good, fun, addictive game. Others that have actually played as the Russians may be able to answer some of your questions better than I.

No, national leaders are not part of the game. There would be no reason to do a purge since you have a limited amount of leaders, you will only be able to assign leaders to a small percentage of your divisions. Leaders add a small bonus to the unit they are assigned

An invasion of Finland is quite common for players of the USSR in PBEMs (check out some AARs posted). It is not a pushover for the Soviets (and it shouldn't be), if they are handled by a human defender.

Reasons to attack Finland (in reverse order of importance probably)

1) you are bored waiting for the German to start Barbarossa.
2) your leaders get some experience in the meanwhile
3) The additional income from an annexed Finland is a (moderate) plus in the long run.
4) The USSR war economy is positively affected when at war, so it pays to attack somebody (small, not Germany). The Baltic states and Finland fit the bill. It is probably a net gain even when considering losses of the campaign (if you don't go in too wild).

I personally find Zhukov's skill level to be way too low.

Zhukov was not a good commander. He did just have more forces than his enemies did (japanse/germans), and that is why he won alot.

I do not agree, to win it takes more than just having more forces than your enemy. War is not only a matter of sheer numbers, there are also other important factors, to my personal opinion. I am not a general though.

That is, of course, your opinion with your statement about him not being "a good commander".

Given your point then, Montgomery should be rated a 1 and not a 6. And MacArthur should be a lot lower rated than the game has him.

Are there a lot of Soviet decisions that reflect Stalin's personal way of doing things and the choices he made historically? I ask because I just watched a new TV program about Stalin's relationship to the Western Allies which I found really interesting; a lot of new information. Any events about The Katyn Forest massacre -where the NKVD murdered several Polish officers and then tried to cover it up to the rest of the world? I read in another thread about an event which represents Stalin's "lost week", where he shut himself off from his generals and advisors after Barbarossa had shocked him. What event is this?

What about the issue of Eastern European countries "liberated"/occupied by The Soviets, most notably Poland? After Poland is defeated, are there any free Polish units still fighting throughout various theatres for the remainder of the war, as happened historically? Since WW2:ToW doesn't end until December of '48, can The Western Allies and The Soviets clash over Soviet policy in Poland (and other Eastern European countries) if The Axis is about to be defeated? Thanks in advance

There is an event that mentions his "Lost Week" that triggers along with other initial shock events when Germany invades. They drastically reduce the effectiveness of the Soviet forces.

I just finished watching "When Lions Roar" starring John Lithgow as FDR - Bob Hoskins as Churchill and Michael Caine as Stalin. It was an interesting dramatic take on the relations of the "Big Three"
