I have the units in a city with a port. I click on the unit. Click on perform amphibious invasion, then click on the tile I want to invade, correct? When I do, the tile highlights, but nothing else happens. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. If I click to another unit, or do anything else, my selected unit is gone. As the German, I would really like to take Malta, or be able to reinforce North Africa. Thanks for your time.

Not quite the right sequence, if am reading your description correctly. Try this :

1. Preplace the amphibious assault forces at sea, in the correct sea zone, for Malta this would be Central Med. This must be done a turn early, and they will be subject to attack, so escort them properly.

2. With the assault forces in the correct zone, click on the hex to invade, Valetta, or the other hex.

3. Clck on the amphib assault, "land units from the sea" button.

4. Select the unit name from the pulldown.

5. Now all you have to do is win the battle the Royal Navy will give you! They may attack in multiple phases as you reselect the unit and try again until you land, or you are destroyed, or you give up.

6. If the hex you are attacking is defended then you must win on the beaches.

7. If all goes well you will win the hex, and will be able to move that turn. If you have not reduced the Mediterranean Fleet quite a bit it will be a dicey venture.  Good Luck.

In regard to Malta, I always take it with an Italian airborne division. Build one on Sicily, move to within 7 hexas of empty hex on Malta. Wait 3 turns then drop on empty hex. Valetta usually surrenders within 1 turn. This is just an alternative to amphib assault. My amphib assaults are always dicey propositions. I had one attempted amphib assault get intercepted by British transports only. I was escorting with BB's and CA's. Somehow those sneaky British transports made their way through the escort of warships to sink my transports.....go figure. Due to that traumatic experience I don't trust the amphib assault function....just saying.
