Greetings

I am working on my "KayBays Allied Strategy & Tactical Doctrine" so I am working heavily with the 43 campaign to squeak out all that I can with the new Matrix Version. While I am here..... you guys did a lot of great work. Man the more I run it the more stuff I see that you added or fixed. Great Work Guys !!!

My question is regarding Sub Pens.

Is there a Minimum or Maximum Altitude limit for doing Serious Damage to Sub Pens?

I would suspect that in this game this is in some manner. Aside from the obvious notion that 384 B-17 G's with 6000 lbs of ordnance are going to have a much higher probability of doing serious damage to Sub Pens than 98 B-25's with 2000 lbs of ordnance. What I am asking is, is it known what altitude range has the highest probability of doing serious damage? Is it coupled with Tonnage delivered? I mean is it a Linked Formual?

IE: Does Tonnage (> X </= X+Y) + Altitude (>L + </= L+U) = Serious Damage Can Ocurr?

Is there a Formula like that?

I am asking this because I have been running Strategic Bombing Missions in 43 campaigns and have noticed something. When Bombing an Industrial target for example, after the Bomb Run I can mouse over the target and it will show some value of damage done to the target as a result of the strike. The Recon status of the target shows 0 Days since last recon as it should. However I have run strikes to Sub Pens and when I mouse over after the strike I have not seen any damage shown from the strike. Now I have only completed a few runs so not a lot of observation data to go on here.

Now in the strikes I ran I was running B-17G's, approximately more than 200 and the altitudes for the drops were 24000 ft and 20000 ft. respectively. Now it is possible that my groups just flat out missed the target. I have seen that with other strikes over the years so I am not discounting that possiblity. However I have not seen several strikes all repeat the same failure of completely missing the same target repeatedly.

So this brings up at least 2 possibilities. (yes there are many more)

1) The altitude I was at was so high that dispersment of the bombs upon impact resulted in an insufficient concentration to do serious damage to the Sub Pens.

2) The actual visible area of the Sub Pens as a target is so small that recon from a strike above a cetain altitude is extremely poor to nonexistant. So the Fog of War factor was in effect and I got a Strike Assessment of no damage done.

Of course what I saw might very well be both of the above together.

So Hard Sarge, Harley, do you have any answers for me?

Later,
KayBay

no real math to it, that I know of

big thing is, Pens are HARD to hit, HARD to hurt, and you go in kind of low, they going to be shot out of the skies, they are normally well protected

(really for me as a player, I have always felt, it is better to plaster the UFAC's instead, stop them from making subs, and it is much easier the losing planes hitting the pens, also, as I think Carlos would say, you gain points for hitting UFAC, you don't score anything for Pens)

for the recon side, I think that may be something to do with Alt of the bombing (in the old BoB game, it used to tell you the bombers were taking pictures after each bomb drop)

but normally, you have to wait for the bombers to land, before getting any good detail on the bomb raid ?

Not sure about the game, but IIRC in RL no sub was ever destroyed in a pen until 45. Also there was no significant damage to the facilites protected by the pens until the Tallboy. For the most part it seemed that they were simply being bombed because the political masters were demanding that somebody do something or a/c were going to be diverted from bombing to maritime patrol. While there seemed to be no direct impact to U-Boat operations, there were many anecdotes about how hard life was for the support people working in the pens since everything outside was totally devestated; made it difficult to go out for lunch

This result could be simply because these are very, very HARD targets that are vitually invulnerable to the weapons available in 43.
