The voyage south for KB is over. Nagumo has the fleet positioned mid way between Norfolk Island and Brisbane. Reports from the submarine screen strung out across the approach to Brisbane indicate that the convoy previously seen sailing to Brisbane is making the return journey to the east. KB has been operating in quiet mode and so far all indications are that the enemy has no idea of the presence of the strike force sitting astride the shipping lane.

The prospect of some air action originating from KB on 18 May is at hand. The submarine screen has done its job and picked up the convoy moving in the direction of KB. The big question is what is travelling with the convoy.... will there be any large warships. Recon suggests there are a couple of battleships with the convoy.... could it be POW and Repulse being redeployed?

The attached screen shot shows the relative positions of the fleets on the day before. It seems that the convoy is going to sail unwarily into the waiting arms of KB.

Hey SJ,
good to see the game is ongoing and that you might be about to have another nice moment where planning has paid dividends.

Amazing to also see 5:1 A2A ... well done!

Have a good N.Y

Your 5 May mention of recce a/c targetting Wake might be indicative of an Allied move against the island - alternatively, Wake could be nothing more than a convenient target for such aircraft. If specialist recconnaissance planes were being used then this might indicate a higher level of Allied 'interest'.

An atoll invasion at this date can be very chancy for an Allied player, particularly if it is within reach of escorted land attack planes carrying torpedoes. But Japan still needs to have fortified infantry in place to repel such an attack, so I hope Wake isn't wide open!

A fat tanker convoy could be a cheap and juicy prize for the KB, but clearly announces its whereabouts a long way distant from Wake if the Allies do have designs on the place.

Winter in the southern reaches of the Coral Sea is a peaceful time of the year. The threat of tropical storms this far south had long receded. For Nagumo and the fleet, though, with dawn fast approaching peacefulness had been left behind ages ago. Preparations proceeded efficiently towards getting the first strike of the day up and away. Scout planes were already aloft and an air of anticipation pervaded the fleet. The composition of KB had altered slightly since the action against Enterprise. Kaga had been left behind and was currently some hundreds of miles to the north. Hiryu was still completing her repairs in the Home Islands. For this action Akagi, Soryu, Zuikaku and Shokaku would fight in company with Shoho.

Not far away and a little to the northwest a large convoy of allied ships sailed serenely on through the quiet waters of the pacific. Their mission complete with the delivery of war goods to Australia the sailors onboard were looking forward to completing their journey back to the west coast of America. They had made it past the submarine picket and the war zone was far to the north and the prospect of a pleasant journey back home was a pleasant diversion from the daily grind of ship board life. The talk of what to do on shore leave was the topic on many a ship. On board the escorts the mood was more disciplined and watchful. The submarine attack after leaving Brisbane had been an unpleasant reminder that the enemy could strike at the most unexpected time and place. Not until they had made their final port would the tension onboard the escorts ease.

Not long after sun rise the message Nagumo was waiting for arrived. ‘Many merchant ships bearing east’. Fuchida was in the air with the first strike. He too had received the message of the first sighting. It was not long before he too was able to look upon the enemy fleet. And a great many ships it was. Somewhat disappointed he noted no large enemy warships but not to worry there was a job to be completed here and he had been granted an opportunity to oversee the destruction of as many of the enemy’s ships as was possible on this day!

Destruction of east bound convoy; Southern Coral Sea

In the first aerial assault of the day 20 Val and 20 Kate escorted by 10 A6M2 fall upon the unsuspecting merchant fleet. Of the cargo ships present San Felipe stops 1 torpedo and Mormacwren is struck by 5 bombs. The tanker Frank G Drum is smashed by 3 torpedoes and the transport Tasker H. Bliss stops 1 torpedo. 1 Val and 6 Kate are reported damaged as the jubilant airmen return to their carriers.

The next wave is made up of 17 Val and 17 Kate escorted by 7 A6M2. Cargo ships are hunted down and this time Susan Luckenbach stops 1 torpedo and 2 bombs and Lancaster is hit by 2 torpedoes whilst Mormacwren is demolished by no less than 4 torpedo hits. Tanker K.R.Kingsbury is struck by 6 bomb hits and fellow tanker F Humphrey stops 1 torpedo. 2 Val and 6 Kate are damaged.

The next strike sees 20 Val and 20 Kate escorted by 8 A6M2 bear in on the tanker Gulfcoast 3 torpedo hits, cargo ship San Felipe 1 bomb and the destroyer Talbot 2 bombs. 1 Val and 5 Kate are damaged and 1 Kate is shot down.

The next strike comprising 18 Val and 20 Kate escorted by 3 A6M2 deals with a group of escorts. John D. Edwards is smashed by 5 bombs and Peary is hit by 2 torpedoes. 1 Kate and 1 Val are damaged.

KB now gets the co-ordination issues rectified and launches a wave of 53 Val and 39 Kate. The fighter boys finding no opposition have taken a break this time. In this raid the following cargo ships are struck; Santa Rita 3 bomb hits, Empire Summer 2 torpedoes, Modjekerto 2 torpedoes, Utahan 5 bombs, Andrea Luckenbach 5 bombs, whilst the following tankers are struck; Brandywine 4 bombs, Connecticut 1 torpedo, Mexicos H Whittier 2 bombs, Tulsagas 1 torpedo and H.D.Collier 2 bombs. The transport Royal T. Frank is struck by 2 torpedoes. 1 Kate is destroyed and 4 damaged in this strike.

In the next strike 17 Val escorted by 28 A6M2 find Susan Luckenbach and drop a further 7 bombs on this luckless ship. The convoy has broken up and hunting down ships is going to become more difficult to the point that in the final strike of the day 17 Kates fly a fruitless sortie.

So ends the first day of hunting. Nagumo is reasonably satisfied with the results but knows better can be achieved yet. There are numerous damaged and undamaged ships to locate and deal with.

Hope you N.Y. was a good one too. Todd and I have been keeping up a steady pace of usually a turn a day. My AAR has slipped to a couple of months behind so plenty to catch up on when I get time to string a few words together. As you can see I did have a very nice moment and the next couple of AAR days will see yet more Allied shipping lost. A pin scratch I know but a very satisfying result non the less.

The A2A results have been very good too although it is mainly made up of the south east asia conquests and lots of fairly good pickings over China.

Opps had to do a small edit after forgetting that some words have a double meaning.

Yes you are quiet right regarding Wake Island. Since the Enterprise foray in Febraury I have been working at getting the airfield up to a level 4 so I can launch torpedoes when the attack does come. Hard to know what Todd will do with this island though as he keeps hinting a leaving some nice Japanese POW camps scattered throughout the Pacific. With the game currently up to the early days of July no attack has eventuated yet although the pesky reconn planes make a daily visit and my Zero CAP just can't seem to bring any of them down.

And yes the attack on the convoy certainly announced the presnece of KB a long way south but with almost 2 months of game play now gone it seems that Todd chose not to take advantage of this knowledge. I think it fits in with his overal strategy of pulling back to a line he is happy to defend then build up overwhelming firepower and strike at a time and place of his choosing. I think he has a dash of Montgomery about him. In any event I reckon the strike on this convoy so far south would have come as an awful shock and I'm quite pleased I managed to sneak KB into position without him becoming aware of it.

Well not much more to say apart from the ongoing action in the Coral Sea. Nagumo faces a difficult decision on where to place his task force for the next day of operations. He expects that all the undamaged ships will hightail back to Brisbane and the cover of all the land based air power that the Allies can muster. On the other hand the damaged ships, he expects will be well dispersed by dawn of the next morning.

Remembering that the object of this sortie is to destroy as much shipping as possible without endangering KB Nagumo opts not to pursue and place his ships within range of land based air operating out of Brisbane. In order to maximise his changes against the dispersed convoy Nagumo orders KB to head to the location of the convoy when attacked. This should provide the best opportunity to locate plenty of fleeing ships no matter which heading they are on.

Another day of good pickings for KB. KB is now positioned where the convoy was and as can be seen the ships have scattered east and west. Nagumo must now decide how best to maximize Allied shipping loses.

Four more cargo ships and four tankers added to the list. Whilst I am sure Todd has managed to get all his undamaged ships back to port safely Nagumo and KB can reflect on a good result. No doubt a blow that would be felt keenly if it were my shipping under the hammer but in the long run this is but a little setback for the Allied cause. All the same I’m hoping it came as a nasty shock for Todd and the following comment from his email after KB first showed its hand probably best sums up his feelings on the matter.

‘Nothing short of a disaster for the Allies. This is the first of many turns that'll cause me nightmares. What's the KB doing so far south and where the hell are my search planes?’

Indeed; where were the Allied search planes? I’d like to think I did learn a thing or two about running silent from my Enterprise foray and of course there is a huge gap to exploit once convoys leave the protection of LBA. About the only thing to be concerned about is CV cover for the convoy and given the lack of CVs in the Pacific I couldn’t see Todd using his precious carriers for convoy protection. Besides I think this convoy was running in an area that Todd thought was probably well out of harm’s way and therefore the convoy was in very safe waters. Only thing that didn’t come off was my recon reporting battleships and cruisers hanging around with the convoy. Maybe just bad reporting but if they were there Todd should consider them lucky to be still above the waves.

Wow an unsupported bomber attack on Mandalay and the CAP performs brilliantly. I guess this was a testing raid by Todd to see what would happen. I doubt he will give me too many opportunities like this between now and when he has long range fighters to escort his bombers.
My forces are massing for an assault to clear the road leading into Homan.
KB has finished the job and is returning to the oilers based in the northern parts of the Coral Sea.

A rare show by the Chinese fighter planes outside of Homan vastly outnumbering the Zero escort. Seems honours are more or less even by the end of the dog fighting.

Little in the excitement department to report on here. Nice to see some grief being dealt to a US sub although no doubt this is another one that will sneak off to have that damage repaired. She will be back to haunt me one day!

25 May 1942

Seem to have lost the copy of results for this turn.

The following message, however, was received at Tokyo.

Message from Moscow delivered to the Japanese embassy 5/25/42 as follows:

The uneasy truce between our countries was violated by your forces six months ago. We now feel that there is a need on our part to be able to verify that Japanese forces are observing the truce and not preparing for offensive actions against the Soviet Union. Therefore it has been decided that the Soviet Union will reserve the right to overfly Japanese held territory, up to a 240 mile limit from existing boarders. These will be unarmed recon missions for the defense of the Motherland only. We will not grant the same rights to Imperial Japanese forces as they will only be used for offensive purposes. Any overflights by Japanese planes will be considered an act of war. Any attempt to shoot down Soviet aircraft on their peaceful verification flights will be considered an act of war.

No reply to this message is required as there will be no negotiations in this matter.

I can’t remember if I bothered to reply other than to clarify the 240 mile limit. My position is to sit tight and hope that Stalin still has his hands full with the Germans...... in the long run though expect to see the Soviets cashing in on American gains in the Pacific.

Back to matters at hand.

At Amboina Japanese forces are victorious and capture the base forcing Molukken Garrison to retreat. 4th Coastal Gun Battalion and 22nd DAF Base Force surrender.

South of Palembang the long awaited Japanese ground assault is launched and results in the surrender of Zuid Garrison Battalion, 1st W S Garrison Battalion, So. Sumatra Garrison Battalion, 5th Dutch Naval Base Force and 4th DAF Base Force.

nice reading up on the reports, good to see the war is still going on over here as well

If its may 42 and still you have just taken Amboina, are all main ports, airfield & production sites taken now? or are the more bases to assault before the "Dutch conquest" ends?

and on the soviets; isn't AA automatically working against the soviet recon?
In my game i have some nates still flying around in manchuria, they're either on cap or training for xp, wouldn't like to see the Russian recon fly into those
how are your fighters doing in HI & kwangtung army? all transfered or training over there? (how do you spend most of your PP? planes or ground units?)

During the daytime bombardment 39 casualties, 3 airbase hits, 3 runway hits, 2 port hits, 2 port fuel hits and 2 port supply hits are reported.

just a minor remark here; kitakami is a torpedo ship at early stages in the war, i'm not sure if she's meant to be bombarding places (bombardments need escorts as well, but i like to stick oi & kita in TF's that are more likely to see combat )

Hey there Flaggelant. Todd and I are getting in a turn a day on most days so it is steady as she goes. We have just made it to 1st August 1942. Not sure how far behind Todd’s AAR is but mine as you can see is a good 2 months shy of the action at the moment.

From memory I think I still have Medan to mop up and a couple of outposts on Sumatra still await conquest but most of the important places have now fallen. Dili and the islands north of Darwin are also still held by the Allies. As for the main production sites they are mine and the time has arrived to garner as much out of them as I can.

I’ve gone through all my units that should be in range of Soviet recon and turned them off. It seems to have worked as two months have gone by without a single Japanese combatant so much as shooting one bullet at a soviet spy plane. Not sure if this is the correct tactic to adopt against the Russians but we’ll see how it goes over the course of the game. I have no doubt Todd will open up a front here when he senses it is time to do so.

Fighters in HI and Kwangtung are for the most part on training. There are only a few Nate squadrons left and during July my production lines have finally ramped up Tojo and Tony production. I have been working towards Tony production more so and will be replacing Oscars with Tony when I can. It is about 6 to 7 weeks away in AAR time though before the Tony and Tojo start production. My main emphasis regarding fighters has been the Zero force based at Ichang... so far they have done outstandingly well against the elements of the AVG which pop up in Chungking from time to time. Todd has made no comment about his AVG loses but I’m sure it must be causing him some concern.

My PP is spent mainly on transferring planes and assigning leaders. Sometimes I have been transferring over lesser ground units too. I have a fairly good stock pile of PP at present.

As for Kitakami she is certainly not made for bombardment duties... so long ago now I can't remember if I deliberately put her on that task or plain forget that she is far too thin skinned for that caper. She is still kicking so there were no dire consequences to this action. I'm sure her captain and crew enjoyed getting in on the action.

I think in a previous report about 1 week ago in game time I reported that the road to Homan had been opened. It hadn’t with several Chinese units still blocking the way. I’m hoping my memory is serving me correctly now and this time the road is indeed clear for my forces to march upon Homan. The defeated units doing the blocking and now in retreat where the 74th, 3rd New and 60th Chinese Corps. Judging from the combat results a difficult bunch to winkle out but they are gone now and Homan will be the next Chinese city in the sights of the Japanese Army.

Not too much action going on, however, Japanese troops are moving up the road towards Homan. A couple of Japanese divisions are moving overland from Ichang in an attempt to cut the city off from Sian. If this is successful there may even be a chance to go for encirclement at Homan.

PO2 Fujiwara P. of F2/Tainan Daitai operating out of Ichang is credited with 5th kill to achieve ace status.
LTJG Chono D. of F2/Tainan Daitai is credited with 5th kill to achieve ace status.
F1/Omura Daitai operating out of Ichang is credited with its 50th kill.
Another lesson here in scouting after my land force meets with an unexpected foe whilst crossing the Salween River. A bloody action but my force is across and if I can hold the position a substantial force of about 8 Chinese units will be caught between this force and the Japanese forces based at Myitkyina.

CVE Unyo arrives at Tokyo. I’m planning on using her for antisubmarine work in convoys ferrying troops around.
The Japanese forces at the T-junction north of Lashio, although still stunned from the arduous river crossing assault, have managed to regroup and mount a resolute defence against the Chinese assault. Marginally outnumbered in the attack [5068 Japanese troops and 35 guns against 7574 Allied troops and 46 guns] the Japanese used the terrain to good effect and of course are confronting what is likely to be less well drilled Chinese troops. I expect from here on in the Japanese forces should be able to dig in and maintain their position whilst further reinforcements make their way to the front line.

Wow the AAR for the month of May 1942 has taken some time to knock over.... started it way back on October 8 last year! By way of review, though, it has been a busy month. The stand out highlights has been the continuing aerial battles over Imphal and Chungking with a host of Japanese aces being recorded this month. Medan has coped an aerial pounding throughout the month. In China my attack has refocussed upon capturing Homan and by the end of the month the road to Homan had been cleared of Chinese forces and the siege was just beginning.

Bases captured by Japanese forces included Palembang, Sinkep Island, Muntok, Raba, Padang, Amboina, Bulla and Lunga.

Of course probably the two most important events during the month – KBs convoy ambush and the demand by the Soviet Union for spy flights (just to add something extra to the mix).

Overall planes loss from all causes for the month of May 1942 was Japan 169 to Allied 203.

hey,

a CVE on ASW duty sounds like a strange idea to me?
i do use AV's & cs to scout/lure subs, but CV's arent in my list of ASW weapons (what if they hit one??)

an important point on aircraft on ASW duty is XP, i believe you need to be at about 80 XP to get some decent ASW results.
newly arrived cv's often have bad xp ratings in the squadrons, might want to check (especially since you get some land based val & kates with 80-ish xp at the start, might want to swap them for the low xp cv based planes, if your still asw-ing with cv's)

Hi flaggelant

Well it might seem a little unorthodox but it was a regular feature of the Atlantic war. I certainly wourldn't be using my CVs or CVLs in this role and my other CVEs are tied up in a dedicated carrier task force of some kind. This one was just for something different to see if something good might come of it... part of my learinig experience. Good point on the 80XP factor.... had a look at the Vals I put onboard and they only rate a combined value of 73. I'll be scouting around to see what better offerings I might have to increase this ships potency. As Unyo turned up without planes I had to go hunting to put something on board in any case.

We'll see how she goes over time.
