Hi all,

Russia tests stealth fighter jet built by Sukhoi

by BBC

A new stealth fighter has made its maiden flight in Russia's far east.

The Sukhoi T-50 jet spent 47 minutes in the air over Komsomolsk-on-Amur and test pilot Sergei Bogdan said "it is easy and comfortable to pilot".

The jet - also known by the Russian designation PAK FA - is seen as a potential rival to the US F-22 Raptor, which first flew in 1997.

The "fifth generation" jet is designed to be invisible to radar. Russia's air force hopes to acquire it in 2015.

I hate this winter. Ice everywhere.

I had to board my train this morning, and didn't notice that I was standing on a patch of ice. I took half a step, and then my legs just disappeared under me. Time slowed down, and I had time enough to think "this is going to hurt, and there's nothing I can do about it". Then I landed square on my tailbone; when 6 feet 6 inches and 235 pounds lands like that, it HURTS LIKE A <EXPLETIVE DELETED>!!!!!!!

I'm glad it's the weekend; I feel like a very large man has beaten me enthusiastically all over my body.

I think we're going to get a dose of your winter snow and ice here in NC.  I don't think this one is going to miss us.

Indeed. My neighbor has been running his generator quite a bit to get it warmed up. Probably be wise for me to do the same.

I finally got to see the Top Gear where they raced the new steam locomotive from London to Edinbourgh

That lovely locomtotive, a Peppercorn A1, named Tornado used 33 pounds of coal for every mile at 75 mph. That is 33 pounds every 45 seconds roughly. Clarkson was tired when that thing got to Edinbourgh.

Edinburgh, Bruce. Don't let any Scottish people around here see you calling it otherwise...

But yeah, that was a good film. Amazing amount of work gone into building that Peppercorn.

The more modern US steam locomotives had automatic stokers (an auger connecting the tender to the firebox). I cannot imagine shoveling 33 pounds of coal every 45 seconds for the 2 or so hours between stops for water.

Once I stepped out the front door - without realizing it had been lightly raining on top of ground frozen by 15f temps for several days - legs went out from under me. I just had time to stiffen properly as I horizontally shot down the ~7 steps and right across the sidewalk.

I feel your pain.
