The USS Pathfinder (AGS-1) is not in the game, but did serve in the Pacific. It would not have a game function, so most players would find it to be useless except for her depth charge armaments, plus a couple of 3" guns for AA.

The Pathfinder was a survey ship from the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey that was taken into the US Navy and used to make maps in preparation for invasions and such.

An interesting bit of trivia: The United States has seven uniformed services with federally commissioned officers. They are the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Oceanographic and Atmoshperic Administration, and the United States Public Health Service. I imagine many readers may not have known about the last two. NOAA was formerly the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey.

All seven services participated in WWII and the PTO. The Air Force was the United States Army Air Corps and NOAA was the USC&GS. Commissioned officers of NOAA and USPHS wear navy Uniforms and Rank.

Quite interestingly, Pathfinder saw quite a lot of action during the war. She was at General Quarters 170 times, operated along the New Guinea coast preparing invasions and surveying harbors, attacked by air several times and even struck by a Kamikazee at Okinawa.

Although taken into Naval Service, the ship operated with USC&GS Officers in the crew.

USCGS Guide (1918) was another ship of the Coast and Geodetic Survey to serve.

quote:

...27 June 1941, she was transferred from the Coast and Geodetic Survey to the Navy.

The Navy converted Guide into a rescue and salvage ship and commissioned her as USS Viking (ARS-1). Based at San Diego, Viking operated in the 11th Naval District off Southern California and in the eastern Pacific Ocean until 1953, when she was decommissioned and sold for scrapping.

USC&GS Guide (1929) was another ship of the USCG&S to serve.

quote:

After conversion for service as a survey ship, Guide entered Coast and Geodetic Survey service in 1941. She did a small amount of hydrographic surveying work in San Francisco Bay, California, before her Coast and Geodetic Survey career was cut short when she was transferred to the U.S. Navy on 16 March 1942 for World War II service under Executive Order 9072 of 24 February 1942[9].

In the Navy, the ship served as the patrol vessel USS Andradite (PYc-11) until 1945. Sources differ on whether she returned to Coast and Geodetic Survey service in 1947,[10] but she was sold into commercial service in 1952 and operated until destroyed by fire in the Pacific Ocean in 1956.

USC&GS Pioneer (1918). In 1941, Pioneer was transferred back to the U.S. Navy, which commissioned her as the salvage ship USS Crusader (ARS-2). Crusader operated from the Panama Canal Zone throughout World War II. She was decommissioned in 1947 and sold in 1952.
