As I understand it, having more than required support does not help any more than having the required support.

I am not sure about this. When it comes to AV support, it almost seems to work like naval support points or port size. I have a Mavis unit at one base doing nav search. There are about 6 or 9 planes there, but 90 AV support. That Mavis unit has been running fine. Mavis units at bases with just enough support or too little, on the other hand, seem to spend more time in maintenance than flying. It appears that each AV support point can be used to maintain planes such that if there are fewer planes than AV support available, then multiple AV points can be used to service a single plane.

I have not definitively measured this with any tests, but my anecdotal observations suggest that during high operational tempo:

# of Support Squads << # of Aircraft : Most aircraft damaged
# of Support Squads < # of Aircraft : Many aircraft damaged
# of Support Squads = # of Aircraft : Some aircraft damaged
# of Support Squads > # of Aircraft : Few to none aircraft damaged (significant benefit for having more than needed)
# of Support Squads >> # of Aircraft : Few to none aircraft damaged (no net benefit for having alot more)

I have been inputting my orders for the campaign game first turn since July 4, 2009. I'm getting close. In another month or two, I might be able to run the turn!

Admiral,

It is always advisable to have extra support, supply, and engineers of the kind you may need at critical and important bases. Support is the 'guts' that run all the functions of bases, from plane repair to ship rearming, to combat invalildation, to local supply shortages, etc. In fact, there are a thousand minor reasons to do this, but the most important one is that your units will not perform well otherwise except under perfect conditions. It also is advisable to expand your critical ports and bases. Generally speaking level 4 or 5 will be needed to run a naval campaign effectively.
