is it under Xerxes reign that Xenophon lead the retreat toward Hellespont, shouting "Thalassa" when reaching it ???

Is that from The March Upcountry?

I dont think so. I think Xenophon was born sometime later.

No need to apologize, Erik. As GFU keeps pointing out, it could always be worse. The truth is that my problems are largely self inflicted (too much ambition, not enough patience, overestimation of the job market, etc). Yours are completely not of your making. In short, I think that youre right and I was wrong and please accept my apologies for blurting things out that got me on your wrong side.

What I really need is a little of whatever Mike has, outlook on life-wise.

Yuri, one more thing :

Persian Empire

* Darius I, one of the greatest rulers of the Achaemenid dynasty of Persia, dies and is succeeded by his son, Xerxes I. During this time the Persian empire extends as far west as Macedonia and Libya and as far east as the Hyphasis (Beas) River; it stretches to the Caucasus Mountains and the Aral Sea in the north and to the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Desert in the south.

[edit] Sicily

* Gelo, the tyrant of Gela, takes advantage of an appeal by the descendants of the first colonist of Syracuse, the Gamoroi, who had held power until they were expelled by the Killichiroi, the lower class of the city, and makes himself master of that city, leaving his brother Hieron to control Gela.

[edit] Deaths

* Darius I, king of Persia (b. c. 549 BC)

is it under Xerxes reign that Xenophon lead the retreat toward Hellespont, shouting "Thalassa" when reaching it ???

you mean you don't know for sure ??? (Where was it suppoed to be ? I just remenber it was far away from sea).

US Military orders can be funny things. They verbally tell you "you are going to XXXX sometime this spring". Then they even post it on bulletin boards so everyone on your community knows where you are going. Then you wait for written orders so that you can make arragements. Then you wait. And wait. And wait. Then sometimes you get told, "we are changing your orders immediately , you need to be in ZZZZZ TOMORROW!". So once we get orders to London UK (and wind up in Washington DC). Another time we get orders to Jacksonville Florida for three years , then after one year we get orders to South Korea. Six months later , having tried to learn Korean and purchased cold weather clothing , they send us to Seattle. Another time we move to Washington DC , just to be told , "don't get comfortable, you leave for Guam in two weeks!".

So to tell you the truth Eric, I really don't know where or when we are going. They lie. They lie a lot. So untill I get a airline ticket in my hand , or arrive where I'm supposed to be , I won't know. But they tell me sometime this spring I move to Omaha Nebraska. But they have lied before.

If you look a few pages back, though, you'll see mike and his son skating down the driveway.

Well, well, the grumpy old rogue is back beebopping around the forums I see.

Grumpy old rogue? GRUMPY OLD ROGUE?!!?!? I've been called many things, like lumpy old toad and clumpy mold slogue, but never GRUMPY OLD ROGUE.

Harrumph.

Actually, I was taking a break from grading papers and thought I would stop by to see what you maniacs have been up to. Imagine my surprise at seeing my old pal RevRick posting that pic of my old flame, Thunder Woman.

I couldn't just let it ride. Besides, the next thing I have to do is get back to reading the wit and wisdom of the witless. It's a sad thing to see what "modern" society, entertainment media and language use have done to the otherwise functional brains of the well-washed social climbers who populate law school classes these days. Did you know, for example, that the lead attorney of the team representing O.J. Simpson at his criminal trial was a guy named Jackie Childs? Or that the doctrine having to do with judicial respect for precedent is starry deciduous?

Oh, well. I'm glad that, come May, I can get back to pursuing my primary goal in life, which is to determine once and for all whether I am a "churnin' urn of burnin' funk" or a "funky trunk o' steamin' junk."

And now, back to "The Jackson 5 Story," starring the Osmond Brothers...

I can imagine. Actually I didn't mind when I was on active duty. But I'm RETIRED! Besides , I don't mind TDY/TAD. Then SHE goes! But what's this moving the family every couple of years? I bet if they slowed up the family move for just one year , we could buy another CVN!

Any how pas, I'm not complaining, I'm just bytchin'. And a bytchin' sailor (or in this case Former sailor) is a happy one!

Bought my new boat in December over semester break and brought 'er up from San Diego to San Fran. Woohoo. 52 feet of brand-new sloop. The fellas (that's Don the Marine and Woody "there ain't a woman been born that can resist me") and I are heading across the Pacific this summer, someday (we think) winding up at my retirement place in the Med.

Who knows what we might actually wind up doing? I know one of our early campaigns will be to invade Hawai'i...

Thats great. If this is what the field looks like, I could go to law school on a scholarship.
