Status: offline 		Japanese AI sent a TF to bombard Port Moresby. I had a TF stationed off Moresby to defend the base. In the night battle, radar made the difference. The Allied TF detected the Japanese group with their radar beyond visual range and opened fire on surprised ships. The Japanese ships that survived were sunk the next day by aircraft.

Status: offline 		That is pretty poor performance by the IJN. But not out of the realm of game possibility, alot of variables at work.

How did the 15in shells do on Yamato? Any penetration hits?

Unfortunately, she had a habit of picking the Charleston as a target. Probably couldn't depress her main guns far enough to hit the thing . . .

Status: offline 		That's surprising to me, because I have had night engagements off Lunga in which the battleship Yamato, virtually alone, handily defeated 3 US battleships and 1 UK battleship. Those battleships had radar, and it did hardly anything! The Yamato came out of it only being hit about 5 times, (none serious) while putting two allied battleships out of action for months.

Fear the Yamato!

Status: offline 		I was very lucky to have lost only one BB and one DD. All the Allied ships had crews with good night battle experience, having participated in several nighttime commerce raids and shore bombardments. Several ships in the TF had SS radar -- never underestimate the value of surprise!

I don't know if the game takes range into account when it figures penetration, but in reality it does make a big difference; given the close range of this night battle -- as little as 2000 yards -- I find it completely plausible that the British 15in guns would defeat the Yamato's armor, which they did. The Yamato took several penetrating hits that slowed her down enough for bombers to catch her the next day. Even though she took 30(!) bomb hits the next day -- none of which penetrated her armor -- the intelligence briefing credited her sinking to 15in shells.

The Royal Sovereign's destruction was credited to the Yamato's 46cm guns.
