This might be a loaded question, but I'm curious what people think. What do you think is the best Matrix WWII game?

It's a loaded Q. Depends on the scale.

I will vote for the close combat series,as for grand stategy i would say none as all of them are too simplistic and quite lame made mostly for children or mentally challenged adults.

For operational level, CotA and the soon to be released Battles from the Bulge are the most advanced/realistic games you will find anywhere. The Campaign Series are also classics that will have a loyal following for many years to come.

I can't say anything about the grand strategy games here,as I did not buy any of those-except WitP and TOAW 3. There is a classic scenario covering WW2 in Europe in TOAW. Although the game was not designed for that application, it plays out fairly well. Although TOAW may not be "cutting edge" gaming technology, it is a great game-and anything but simplistic. I've never heard anyone say that WitP is simplistic either.

Depends on an individuals perception of best.

I'd agree with COTA for example for execution and command structure.

That really sounds more like the risklike Patchdox games of HOI than Matrixgames versions. Gary Grigsbys World at War is really the best of all of them out there until WIF comes out.

CotA. The only other potential candidate is WitP:AE. The first is the more polished and 'finished' product but, in view of the sheer scale and ambition of the latter it can't really be criticised in that regard. I wouldn't argue with either pick BUT, I hope both BftB and WitE will knock their respective stablemates off their perches!

oops - I don't think you took the question the way I meant it and reading my own question back makes me think this even more.

I guessed you did have it...I was wanting to know what you thought of it. (don't know why I didn't just ask what you thought of it!). But even that question seems ridiculous as you've already mentioned it in a thread called "What is the best Matrix WWII game?"

just forget I even posted here!

WiTP:AE looks hefty... AND with a hefty price tag. Too bad I won't pay anything over 50 bucks for a game. Looks cool though.

COTA handsdown............ although WITP:AE is a terrific game it's a little to big for me.

Best WW2 Matrixgames game? Steel Panthers World at War Generals Edition. Of all the Matrixgames games I own this one gets played most of all followed by Panzer Command:Kharkov/Winter Storm bundle. The community mods for SPW@W are unmatched and the longevity of it surpasses anything they've ever made or published.

By COTA, I'm assuming that is Conquest of the Aegean? This thread is the first I've heard anyone talk about it. This is a real-time game correct? What makes this better than Highway to The Reich? I own that one. Thanks!

I like AT WWII myself. It gets more playtime than WiTP or COTA.

I used to play Steel Panthers when it first came out and yep - it was an awesome game, but the graphics make my eyes bleed and units are very difficult to spot. I always thought this, it's not an age thing, but I let it go because about the time it was the very best in detailed combat. But I could never go back to it unless it got a graphics overhaul...then I'd be all over it like a cheap suit

Well apart from the general sprucing up that alot of games get, COTA (yes - Conquest of the Aegean)has a detailed supply system...though I have to be honest that I wasn't sure the game came with enough scenarios to really test it to the full...not enough long scenarios. My memory might be letting me down. It's been over a year since I played it (bout time for a reinstall actually!).

As for "Real Time", I feel I have to correct that. The term "real time" puts alot of people off games because they can't handle the speed of the action (me included). This is Pausible Real Time...there is a significant difference in that the user can pause to give orders if they feel overwhelmed by the real time playout aspect of the game.

I know you know this...I'm just clearing it up for anyone reading who thinks "Real Time? pfft...was going to get it but can't keep up in real time"

Thanks for the explanation JudgeDredd. I just went and picked up TOAWIII after being told I probably shouldn't. I'll probably also pick up COTA. Do you know if it is supported (or works) under Windows 7?

I haven't had any issues running any games under Windows 7 apart from the GG:EDtoBTR (Gary Grigsby:Eagle Day to Bombing the Reich) and that was a video codec issue I believe (and most likely nothing to do with Windows 7)

I'll install it tonight and let you know.

The irony of course is that, just as with HttR, much of CotA is actually played in accelerated rather than 'real' time! The reason is obvious, of course, when you consider that you are talking about hardcore tactical/operational level WW2 games and think about the timescales involved. I actually prefer "continuous time", as a distinction from turn-based. The essential thing is that you have complete control over the flow of time, so you overwhelmed by neither action nor tedium depending on what is (or isn't) happening.

Awesome! Thanks for checking. I did install HttR and that seems to work fine as well on a Windows 7 64bit machine and I think that's a couple years older.

I must be missing something. I like COTA, but it does have limitations. Lack of campaign, for one. It is a fun game, but best?

I think it's fair to say yes...you are missing something.

But really, it just depend on what you look for in a game. yes, there is no campaign, but what is there is phenomenal and will kick your arse unless you keep your wits about you. I for one think it has some of the best AI and command structure out there...and that's why I rate it so highly.
