Want to bet that 1) each of those cars claimed to have the right of way 2) lied on the police report?

Look Steve, much as with your French ancestry, you can claim all you want that you dont live in DC, but you know its true.

Well, boys, life is a pretty amazing thing, and I've had one that occasionally likes to sneak up behind me - particularly when things are going well and I feel that I have some control over the doggone thing - tap me on the shoulder, and whisper, "So you think life is good and you've pretty much seen it all, eh? Well, come over here, big boy, you got something to learn."

To recap, a couple of years ago, I retired to a European country in the Mediterranean area (I don't like to give too many personal specifics out here, so excuse me for being vague). I had found a beautiful, out-of-the-way place - an old, abandoned monastery and its grounds - that had a modernized dwelling on it. I negotiated a deal with the government (mistake #3,338,494 - trusting a government, ANY government) whereby I would buy the residence and adjoining area, and assume titular ownership of the rest of the property while agreeing to supervise and work on the restoration project that the church wanted done in order to make the place something of a museum, library, and place of worship and contemplation.

Pretty sweet. The first year went really well, and progress was good, even nearing completion in many respects. After some give-and-take with the law school in the U.S. where I taught for 16 years, I cut a deal to return for one academic year to restructure the curriculum for teaching professional responsibility and ethics and create a two-semester sequence of required courses, in an effort to do a better job of helping law students have a better idea of what it takes to be a respectable member of the legal profession (and, incidentally, raising the estimation in which "those danged lawyers" are held in society).

Nice. I was going to finish the year, accept the accolades and trophies - well, maybe the accolades and paycheck - then return to my retirement paradise, which I had rented out to a caretaker family in my absence.

Lo and behold, the world economic crisis rose up to bite me on the butt. The government, one of the most broke in Europe right now (I think you can easily guess which one it is), due to its financial difficulties, abrogated its responsibilities under our agreement.

So, I have accepted the caretaker family's offer to buy the property and deeded all remaining interest in the rest of the monastery grounds back to the government.

Come May, then, I got nowhere to go. I'll be a homeless old bugger. I got my boat, and I still plan to go sailing, but I have no idea where I'll end up.

Any suggestions?

(as Ringo sang it, ...but, oh, that magic feeling, nowhere to go. Nowhere to go...

I'd suggest a nice beach area in South America.

Yah, Yuri, but I've been there, and there's no such thing as "living" in D.C. It's kind of an undead place, actually.

Where you at, Steve? Alexandria or something? I've got a small matter to handle before the D.C. Circuit in April, I oughtta look you up (of course, I said that to the wrong girl once and got my face slapped...).

Nah. The locals would see me and say, "What's that old pathetic-looking, washed out white thing over there on the sand? We better throw it back into the ocean and see if it's alive."

Yep. Braddock street station in right near by building (the Metro stop between King Street station and Reagan National. I'll let you know as April gets closer if I'm still here (hopefully) and perhaps you'll let me buy you a drink or three?

If its the DC court, I'm assuming that it's near Judiciary square?

Made my first Old Fashioned last weekend. Needs some work. I did discover I like rye whiskey just fine.

They are not bad with a blended whiskey either. In some areas Rye can be hard to find.

Actually it is VERY hard to find. Jim Beam is the only one readily available and I'm sorry but I'm not touching anything with Jim Beam on it. This was called 'ri' and was very good.

Good deal. It'll be an honor to meet you, Steve. Any further info ought to be by PM, so you don't have to sacrifice your privacy (I doubt that you're an exhibitionist).

D.C. is an old haunt of mine, having been stationed there twice during my Air Farts years and practiced before the federal bar (the Supreme Court is a bizarre bunch to try to talk at. They're so detached and uninformed. The federal circuits are much more lively and entertaining. For example, I once invoked an old story about a conversation between a farmer and O.W. Holmes, Jr. in which the farmer said, "Pigs is pigs, yeronner" in support of the proposition that, if it's got a snout, tusks, pink skin, bristles, hooves and a curly tail, it must be a pig, and the only Jewish judge ever to sit on the U.S. Eighth Circuit court of Appeals interrupted my fun to ask, "Well, counsel, was it kosher?" I coulda shot him. I mean, doesn't a Jew know better than to trample on a guy's punch line?).

If this is any sort of quiz, I'd bet on Greece ... (?)

metaxianikou efkeresto.

Honestly, I don't know Greek and Google translate gives zilch on those words. The only thing I recognize relates to the Greek "Metaxa" brandy. I have, however, been on vacation on Cyprus for every year since 1998, so I 'sort'a' recognize the spelling. I take it I was right in my guess ...

Did you have a bad experince with that label? I've always been fond of their green label borboun (it's sweeter than most , and I find it good for mixing sweet borboun drinks , like a julip).

Well, Pas, looks like life served up a great big old sheetburger for you. It sure could have gone worse for you when the local government started scraping the bottom of the barrel over there. At least you were able to "sell" part of your assets over there instead of having them "liberated for the good of the people."

Now, as for which direction to point that beautiful new boat of yours, why not start a tour of the more hospitable Pacific War locations? With any luck, you might run into LST's outrigger girls.

Working on my first turn as Japan PBEM. So many toys. I can only hope that I mess up less than my opponent

My old man was a cop. One winter day when I was riding around with him, he got an emergency call. The road was snow covered and icy in spots, so he was driving carefully. All of a sudden, a deputy sheriff, lights flashing and siren blaring, flew past us like we were standing still. The old man got on the radio and said, "You've got more guts than I do."

I just can't get past the Japanese economy and industry. Good luck. Tell me sometime how aircraft engine production goes for ya.

I think I could actually enjoy wrapping my tiny brain around the great big ball of mess that is the Japanese economy. My problem is barely having enough time to do justice to the Allied side. I'll need to retire before I can devote enough time and energy to playing Japan.

And the Government and the DC Metro just annouced that both will be closed tomorrow , day seven of Snowmageddon. Most of the local school systems have said "screw it, we will see you next tuesday!". I wonder , judging from the chaos this evening (high gusting winds , drifting snow) if there is any hope of the area digging out for Friday?

How's everybody north of here? Yuri? Aces? Anyone? Hello!
