Group patrol altitude is 20000 , scrambling fighters between 12000 and 20000. Time for all group planes to reach interception is 58 minutes 18 planes vectored on to bombers I couldn´t believe my eyes that this was really happening. I never thought Rainer would dare to atatck Brisbane or Sydney this and he didn´t last time when KB came down from Rabaul and passed New Caledonia on it´s west side. While I´ve got my subs at Brisbane (together with some freighters and other low value stuff) I´ve got my carriers and a big part of the USN at Sydney. Brisbane has got 130 fighters but Sydney has 190 land based fighters PLUS the 100 carrier based fighters. All carrier based pilots are elite and the land based fighter pilots are highly trained, all are between 60 and 70 air and def skill. This makes Sydney quite a tough nut for everything the IJN can send in and I felt quite safe to be honest. But like I´ve said, I thought that Rainer wouldn´t dare to move anywhere close to Sydney or Brisbane anyway and that he would just move towards New Zealand again to find nothing but one or two more low value AKs, just like last time. I know he isn´t "happy" about my TF routing as his subs are moving around in areas where none of my ships are and the same has been true for KB the last couple of times the IJN carriers were on a raid. My TFs move just too far off normal shipping lanes, especially those that carry troops and I´m also restricting myselve to big convoys but few ones instead of sending out a lot of TFs. This slows me down but I´ve got enough time anyway, no need to hurry, better doing things safe then risking something for no gain. But this turn proved me wrong in thinking that Rainer would stay away from Australia´s coast as he moved in towards Sydney. I of course took some precautions and formed up my CVs with all the BBs and heavy escorts but kept them undocked in the hex as taking on KB would have been suicide of course. For me unbelievable but true, I suddenly saw Vals and Kates spotting my carrier TF at Sydney and at that moment I knew we´ll see heavy action. After my carriers being spotted, KB reacted towards them and launched this strike. Needless to say that I wasn´t amused to see a perfectly coordinated strike and my first impression was: oh ****... on the second look I noticed how many of my fighters were in the air. The answer was: ALL of them! My land based fighters were set to 70% Cap 20.000ft and the carrier based fighters were set to 70% Cap at 15.000ft. The result was all of my fighters in the air and an ongoing BOUNCE against the high experienced Zeroes on escort. It was a massacre so to say. Forget about the losses here in the combat report, they are the usual complete BS, during the replay we took down more than halve of the Zeroes for marginal losses on our side, even the on the forum hated Airacobras proved to be killers when having the bounce (they´ve got better stats than Warhawks anyway). After halve of the Zeroes being shot down with some of our fighters shot down, damaged or out of fuel/ammo our remaining Cap of something like 250 fighters engaged the bombers. The IJN bombers are so fragile and the Allied fighters carry such a punch that 4 out of 5 attacks net in a kill. Even the F4F-3s with only 4 cal.50 are killers and there´s really no need to have a sixpack when going in against Zeroes or single engined Japanese bombers. The fighters scored kill after kill and it was quite nice to watch until: eeeeek! Aircombat done! WTH? 130 bombers were attacking our carrier TF. I was SHOCKED and nearly dropped out of my chair as I´ve thought at that moment my carriers would now all be gone. Val after Val dropped down attacking our ships but missing, same was true for the Kates for a real long time. The whole engagement must have been insane to watch for Rainer too, especially the massacre before the bomb runs but probably even more so all the misses. But then the first bomb hit it´s target and saw an ammo storage explosion . But then, for a long time, nothing else has hit my ships. A couple of non penetrating hits followed (I really like British armored CVs ) until the first carrier was hit by a torp and suffered a fuel storage explosion. Damn it, not good... Also POW took a torp but no further damage. Overall the performance of 130 excellent IJNAF bomber pilots was a shame and needless to say that Rainer was quite pissed off. Needless to say that I took a deep breath that my fleet survived. First I´ve thought the bombers had such a bad hit rate due to my fighters shooting up their formations but now that I´ve actually read the combat report I see that there were THUNDERSTORMS in the hex. Not the hundreds of fighters saved my a$$, it definetely was the weather. I´ve noticed insanly bad bombing results in both this PBEM and my AI test game earlier and I´m sure it was the weather here that lead to such bad results for the attacker. I´ve been on the lucky side here, would the weather have been clear, it would have been a massacre within the attacking bombers, but the result would have been a couple of sunk Allied CVs too. Phewww.... So I got away quite good in the morning, I was a little pissed off that there hasn´t been a post air engagement as I still had some 200 fighters in the air but they didn´t attack the bombers after their bombing run. Following this strike you may wonder why there´s no Allied counter strike. The answer is, I´ve set all my bombers to rest, as the only thing I could imagine was Rainer moving closer to Sydney to draw out a couple of dozen of my bombers into a Zero Cap trap to shoot them all down for no result. When I look at my hundreds of fighters and more than halve of the bombers getting through then I guess my Marauders, Banshees and SBDs could have achieved someting considering the fact that our fighters have more punch and our bombers are tougher than their IJN counterparts. Group patrol altitude is 20000 , scrambling fighters between 8000 and 20000. Time for all group planes to reach interception is 55 minutes 10 planes vectored on to bombers being heavily shot up in the morning, I thought no strike would come in in the afternoon... but, we were lucky and a strike came in... As our fighters suffered more or less no losses during the morning attacks, we again had over 200 in the air in the afternoon... and we saw the same thing happening as in the morning, our fighters on Cap were in a higher position than the escorting Zeroes, our fighters bounced the enemy and shot them to pieces... some 25 Zeroes were shot down and then the fighters turned to attack the bombers... all but five bombers were shot down, the remaining five dropped their load but missed... WOW... while I wasn´t really happy after the morning strike (but surely could have lived with it), this afternoon massacre made my day... now it was time to wait for the replay to end and look at my ships and the total aircraft losses... what a day... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Afternoon Air attack on 4th Division, at 98,130 (Port Moresby) Weather in hex: Overcast Raid spotted at 43 NM, estimated altitude 8,000 feet.
