In a hex you can click on the land units list. What is the purpose of the targets' column in the list? The manual just mentions that it is there, but gives no explanation. Thanks.

It tells you at a glance what each unit is targeting and how far along they are. It is very useful rather than having to look at each unit, especially when you are setting units for a future invasion target.

FYI the 'target' has at least two functions - as it reaches 100, it gives the unit some advantages when initiating or defending combat in the hex location. It also increase training effectiveness under most circumstances.

So you should, where feasible, move a unit to its target...correct?

Not necessisarily, but many people use the target as a reminder of where the unit will go or attack next.

Its important to get the # to 100, especially for low or moderate quality troops - then the troop quality and morale will improve faster. That and the rest / training mode is how you can upgrade the quality of these troops. Dont under estimate the value of this tool. Note it is far easier for your opponent to pick up signal intel on intended targets through your 'target' selection. Keep a keen awareness of that in selecting targets. If you want the best chance of a secret attack, I suggest not setting target to the actual intended target. My experience has yet to prove out what 'real' combat benefit attacking or defending the 'target' hex has, but I feel it clearly has a training benefit.

Perhaps others know more about the real 'effective' combat benefit.

Note signal intel also can pick up the destination target of a task force.

OK...next question: where do you find this number? The ground units list display only gives each unit's target; not this number.

The target accumulated planning points can be viewed from the unit information screen. Bottom right under the "Set Future Objective" is the name of the target and next to it inside the parenthesis is the current planning points toward that target.

It is also very unadvisable to try Amphibious assault against defended target without at least 50 "preparation" towards that target. In atolls, 100 is often required to ensure successful landing. If your landing gets disrupted badly because of lack of preparation, one can lost major portions of landing unit and will be forced to evacuate whole landing.
