Boys, we all know that Pris was one of the replicants (led by Roy, with Leon and Zhora (the "pleasure model" - talk about beauty and the beast) who rebelled and came back to earth looking for whoever made them so that they could find out whether they could get more life (replicants had a built-in termination date - but didn't know when it was. Oh, the fun St. Augustine had with THAT concept...). Our boy "Sushi" Deckard (Harrison Ford) was a "blade runner" (elite police operative whose job was to "retire" such rebelling replicants) who had grown sick of what he saw as killing these very human-like creations, but he is pressed into service one last time to meet this threat, which was the most dangerous ever to come along, as Roy was a special talent with superior abilities (maybe even superior to those of the humans who made him).

It's not easy to meet your maker. Great movie. Most critics hated it, which seems to happen with just about every movie I like.

Oh. It was made from a Philip K. Dick short story titled, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" The various artistic commentaries on the human condition and the paradoxes illustrated are priceless. One of my all-time top five - and the scene where Daryl Hannah is about to crack Harrison Ford's head like a walnut between her thighs is worth the price of admission all in itself...

Whatever you say, Mynok bird, but I suppose you red sand ants weren't real happy with that early off-world colony the earthlings planted on your rocky, waterless (show me the proof - real proof) hotel lobby ashtray.

You've been a busy little Martian beaver equivalent on other threads, haven't you? I couldn't resist yanking your space-tit modulator over on the "Stupid Axis & Allies" thread - hope you don't mind.

Just another place for the intellectually challenged to hang out - why would you bother? The Japanese had no interest in Darwin historically (other than bombing it a little) for many good reasons - it led nowhere, it was a commitment of forces direly needed elsewhere, and the logistical and sealift capability for such an undertaking just did not exist (and the same can be said about any number of other unrealistic-but-grandiose projects fantasized over by so many players of the Japanese side in WitP and now AE - Hawaii, the U.S. west coast, greater Australia, New Zealand, India, the Soviet Union, all of China, to name a few.

But, that's why we play the game, isn't it? To imagine how sex with various beautiful, exotic women completely out of our league and beyond our reach would be like?

Hmmmm?

How do you reference a search field? AKA how do you find out the syntax of the search field?

Been staring at this source code for 30 minutes and I cannot figure it out. Would help if I knew what the heck I was looking for.

Star Wars 'fight scenes' were always so much cooler than Star Trek by and large. Star Trek science, philosophy and morality always was much more interesting than Star Trek. Different focuses, each done well.

I've wandered around in Dick a lot (sorry, couldn't resist). Like all of those guys from that era (Heinlein, Asimov, Clarke, et al.), his stuff is a little uneven, and age starts to get the best of his reason. Still, it's fun to wander around in.

One of the generally unmentioned things about Blade
Runner is how good Rutger Hauer is as Roy (short for Royal, I think). His dying scene toward the end on the roof after he has inexplicably saved Deckard's life - with a hand through which he has driven a nail to cause enough pain to remind him he is still alive - is just remarkable. When he says, "Time to die" and slumps over, releasing the pigeon he has been holding, it makes you whir and whistle inside.

As a teacher of mine once said after reading some of my poetry, "Your poetry makes me want to go home and write poetry." That was back in my artsy-fartsy, pre-cynicism days.

Well, this is getting into dangerously nerdy territory, but I'm not so far gone to scream about "canon" while foaming at the mouth, so I may be excused, I think. Consider the "universes" themselves. IMHO ST, especially TNG, is much more complete and real than the simple good vs evil struggle of star wars. If you go beyond what the Hollyweird folks were actually able to put on the screen, I think you'd have to agree.

Terminus once posed a longish opinion to the exactly same effect. And if that doesnt give you nightmares for a week and cause you to reexamine everything you thought was true, I dont know what will.....

Ah! A man who keeps SPAM handy to break out at whim.

So, tell us, chick'n'bone, when does society collapse completely, leaving us to survive on whatever we can scrape together? And how many cases of dear old SPAM do you have squirreled away?

Just be careful not to store it on top of the ammo. If a can cracks open, that juice could set it off...

Frank Herbert gave a good coming of age tale in "Dune". Later he philosophized about the environment, political science and the nature of man. In terms of Sci-fi he didn't offer a great deal of science. He instead presented ideas. Ellison, Dick and Herbert all gave us disturbing visions. Roddenberry and Lucus put their vision on film. I would argue that the ideas in print surpass the visual media because the mind provides the special effects. The prequels of Star Wars bear this out. Just my 2 cents.
