Status: offline 		After reviewing the Gods and General thread, this has gotten me back in the mood for good Civil War movies and was curious on recommendations from this group. I have pretty much seen the following so interested in others I may have missed.

- Gettysburg
- Gods and Generals
- Blue and the Gray
- Glory
- Andersonville
- North and South
- Hunley
- Red Badge of Courage
- Cold Mountain
- Wicked Spring
- Ride with the Devil

Any other gems worth picking up? I'm mostly looking for dramas/movies, not actual documentaries like Burn's series or things you would see on the history channel:)

Based on the book, "The Red Badge of Courage" w/Audie Murphy -- and other familiar faces -- is a timeless classic of soldiering in the Civil War, or most any war for that matter.

I remember first seeing that flic on an in-flight movie while deploying for Desert Storm; I found it ironic that Wagner was a "sand fort".

Status: offline 		Not favourites perhaps but Civil War movies for "period" perspectives might include:

Birth of a Nation; (1915) D.W. Griffith's silent feature shot when many Civil War vets were still alive and well.
Gone with the Wind; (1939) Worth sitting through even if just for the fall of Atlanta (no CGI sfx in those days) and depicting the well documented attitudes of the Southern planter class towards the North at the start of the War.

Wasn't there an appallingly bad TV mini-series back in the eighties called Ironclad or something like that about the USS Monitor-CSS Virginia fight?

Thanks for the heads up for Wicked Spring, it looks very good from the trailers.

and to add something new, Ang Lee's "Ride with the devil", a very interesting and atypical ACW film about Missouri "guerrilla" wars between Bushwhackers and Jayhawkers.

I loved both of those movies. Josey Wales is a bit out there, but its a classic. Walse is bad to the bone.

Status: offline 		For such a remarkably important period in American history, the Civil War has resulted in only a few decent movies and a host of bad ones (the latter include Cold Mountain and Dances with Wolves, both of which are stinking piles of hooey).  Gods and Generals is equally noxious.

Some of the better movies dealing with the Civil War or Civil War era):

Shenandoah
Gone with the Wind
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (a western that is set during the Civil War)
Gettsyburg
Glory

Status: offline 		There's not that many dedicated ACW war movies that I know - GB, G&G, Glory, Red Badge being the only ones that I've seen. The rest falls more into the "a story set during the ACW" category, with combat/war segments of varying quality.... much the same as the actual war movies, unfortunately.

Status: offline 		The Gettysburg film with Sheen as Lee is the best I've seen. A lot more action and less talking like the others. It's my favorite ACW film. Zulu is my 2nd favorite war film of all time.

Status: offline 		I am so confused as to how you could like Zulu so much.  I found it almost impossible to keep my eyes open that long to actually get to any action part.

I am going to be a hypocrite here, and state Glory was probably in my top 2 favourite CW movies.  I guess the Hollywood directing seems to make it decent.  And yes, I do CRINGE at this, since I am always hating anything that has to do with Hollywood so much, but I guess as far as this film went, I liked the style.  It didn't go too overboard at least.

Hmm, I don't get that one... pls explain :D

There's Cold Mountain on freeTV here right now, and Glory will be on in 2 hrs. I've only seen fragments of Glory, so I can't remember the plot. Worth watching?

Broderick often played much younger roles, but he was approximately Shaw's age when he starred in "Glory".

BTW, Broderick is believed to be a distant relative of Robert Gould Shaw (IMDb)

Ahhh that Ferris guy who "borrowed" his father's car (IIRC?)?
Dang, it used to be terrible with movie titles here, German distributors had a tendency to either pick a new title or alter the original title, so Germans often end up asking dumb questions. Well, in this case it was the name "Bueller" that confused me.

Are you sure you're not thinking of Zulu Dawn? As I found that one rather boring until the last like 10 minutes, but, Zulu gets to the action pretty quickly and there's at least 30 minutes or more of pure action battle scenes.

My favourites would be (1) Glory, (2) Ride with the devil and (3) Gettysburg.

The Outlaw Jose Wells and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly are damn good ‘Civil War’ Westerns. Favourite line in the Outlaw Josie Wales: “Are you gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?” The Confederate cavalry in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly looked like members of ZZ Top.

Status: offline 		Anybody remember a movie made in the 50's about some Confederate soldiers on an undercover mission in Vermont to blow up a Union ammo dump? A very good movie for it's time. I think the lead actor was Van Heflen.

@Judge Dread
You should sit through Glory and try to get over Matthew Broderick. It's a very good movie and the other actors give great performances. The regiments first fire fight is one of the best Civil War battle scenes I've seen.

I find this statement the most remarkable statement I've read in a long time.

I think Killroyishere is right - you might be thinking about Zulu Dawn and whilst I agree it took a while to get to the action the film was also an awesome film
